Lin replied to the topic What is your biggest struggle as a writer? (Long rants welcome) in the forum Topic of the Week 5 years, 11 months ago
@kathleenramm Personally I think it’s other people telling me what to do.
Like, I guess being a writer you see all sorts of writing accounts on social media giving writing advice and things. Not that all writing advice is bad, of course. Personally I feel, however, that writing advice really only applies to beginner writers. I appreciate the…[Read more]

SeekJustice replied to the topic What are some interesting quirks you have given your characters? in the forum Topic of the Week 5 years, 11 months ago
I have a sort of recurring quirk that in any book where its appropriate (ie, historically or culturally accurate) I have a character that drinks black coffee. I know absolutely no one who drinks black coffee in real life, but I just noticed one day that I did it heaps and now it’s an inside joke for me.
Also a have a lot of…[Read more]

@kathleenramm I actually base most of my quirks off of real people, haha. And I think that quirks really do make a story more attractive than a premise. XD

@kathleenramm It’s hard to enter a writing community without meeting people who like The Lord of the Rings : ) I’ve heard a lot of people like The Hunger Games trilogy, but I haven’t yet read it.  If you don’t mind, what about it did you like? Would you recommend it to any reader, or is it a book you think only some would appreciate?…[Read more]

@kathleenramm Hmmm…*immediately forgets everything I’ve ever done, ever*
I suddenly want to know a lot more about that villain of yours.
Hmm…I’m gonna take quirks to mean “not bad things”. I have one character that’s always barefoot, another who constantly wears a white baseball cap, and another who always orders a beer but gets a root beer…[Read more]

Elizabeth replied to the topic What was the very last scene you wrote? How did it go? in the forum Topic of the Week 5 years, 11 months ago
@kathleenramm Well, the last scene I started was one I began one yesterday in class wherein one of my villains shows up with a sawed-off shotgun and starts making snide remarks at one of my protagonists. It’s working well in the conflict arena, but perhaps not so well in the “why do characters in my fantasy novel have guns” arena. *shrug*
The…[Read more]

The last scene I completed I wrote last night while I was watching Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. the movie just gave me a burst of inspiration and I wrote a whole scene of a new novel in about 30 minutes.
It was a prologue and it involved the main character finding an evil something in the forest and it introduces all t…[Read more]

@kathleenramm Yep! The next story is going to be kind of a prequel to this one, but it happens in a small seaside town in a summer where a strange cafe appears, along with some extremely strange people. Totally relaxing. Totally not going to have mysterious disappearances 🙂

@kathleenramm The last scene I finished? Or the last scene I worked on?
Well, they both were pretty similar, so…
Last I wrote was about fifteen minutes ago, but I’ll go with the one before that. Mainly a couple of characters are trying to go around the area putting up seals so that they can trap the villain…mainly just traveling around and…[Read more]

Elizabeth replied to the topic Do you listen to music while you write? What kind of music do you listen to? in the forum Topic of the Week 5 years, 11 months ago
@kathleenramm That’s such a difficult question to answer, because, like most things in writing, it depends. I used to not be able to write without a soundtrack, but lately I’ve found that I often write fastest in silence.
However, when IÂ do listen to music, I usually like listening to music with lyrics that put me in a happy mood, even if it…[Read more]

@devastate-lasting Ahhh cool! I’ll look into those. Yeah, Studio Ghibli is almost the only Anime I’ve watched (Anime is still a fairly new interest for me). What’s “Your Name” about?
@gracie-j I think I’m glad I’m in the middle… I still have responsibilities as an older sibling, but there’s a lot I didn’t have to deal with as well XD And I do…[Read more]

@gracie-j I’m third to youngest– most of my siblings are all grown up and gone now. I’ve always wondered what it would be like to be the oldest 🤔
Hm, just maybe you’ve convinced me to watch GWtW again 😉 I’ll admit, historical romance is not something I normally read or watch, but I like to give things a try 🙃
Actually… hm. I don’t think…[Read more]

@kathleenramm I was actually just researching this topic for the KP article I’m writing and was just about to make a topic doing an unofficial survey on this very topic!
Personally, I love listening to music while writing. I’ve just been editing articles and I’m listening through the Prisoner of Azkaban soundtrack as we speak. John Williams, you…[Read more]

@kathleenramm I like to listen to music when doing anything. Helps me focus a lot.
Usually when I write I’ll put on whatever it is I’m into at the moment. Ranges a lot…
But more often than not I’ll open up my “Writing stuffs” playlist on Youtube, which consists of a lot of mixes, like chill, or trap, or chillstep, or swing…

@kathleenramm Heh, that’s an excellent question. I have a one-sentence summary, but that doesn’t exactly do my poor convoluted characters justice. So:
Horace has a problem. His half-brother Rand was on schedule to marry Lady–er, Queen Tinumali in a week and forge the strongest political alliance of the decade, but Rand is nowhere to be found…[Read more]
