@dekreel I really like Alfred’s voice, which is especially important in something told in first person. 😉
My tops tips are to be really sensitive to the five senses. While these details are important in any POV, I think it can really shine in first. Especially touch/textures, taste and smells, which I find are often overlooked.
Also, first is a…[Read more] -

@dragon-snapper Michael would probably choose a political celebration, just because a Christmas party would potentially be very awkward. He has a rocky relationship with his family, and he doesn’t have many close friends.
@perfectfifths He’d rather fight a dragon than be one. (Especially a greedy dragon.)
@catwing Michael’s not a huge animal…[Read more] -
introvert_girl replied to the topic Would someone please tell me if these first chapters are too depressing? in the forum Novel Critique Requests 6 years, 11 months ago
@his-instrument My thoughts are that in the opening chapters, you want to be intentional about showing the reader what the tone of your story is, so they know what to expect. If the dark/sad elements in the beginning are conveying that, it may not be a problem. Unless you just want the story to be lighter in tone overall. In that case, I find the…[Read more]

introvert_girl replied to the topic How Do I Write a Sad Ending?! in the forum Plotting 6 years, 11 months ago
@jenwriter17 I feel like that’d help give that spark of hope the others were talking about. Maybe the Queen’s been kidnapped, but the MC has an idea where her adviser is holding her captive. Maybe a character the MC has been at odds with throughout the book tells her they’ll help her find the Queen, or that they don’t blame her for what happened.…[Read more]

@jenwriter17 Even if it feels like they’ve lost, I’d still give them some sort of victory, even if it seems really small. A great way to do this, is pretty much what @jane-maree said. If they can grow as a person in some way, I think it will help the ending feel more satisfying. In stories, I personally find internal victories more exciting than…[Read more]

@jenwriter17 You’re right, there should definitely be some sort of conflict between them. Thanks for the idea 😀

@daeus I see a lot of people who pin pictures for inspiration like that, especially characters. Though I don’t think you can pin someone else’s image and change what the pin links to. But you could probably copy paste a link to your blog in the description of the pin. (If that didn’t make sense I can try and explain it better, lol.) But I think…[Read more]

@catwing Michael doesn’t really have a greatest enemy, so he’d choose one of his parents. Though I’m not sure if he’d choose to swap places with his mom or his dad. Maybe his mom, because her life seems less stressful.
@dragon-snapper Probably a sith, his only reason being that he hates having to conceal his emotions.
@emily Michael is trained in…[Read more] -

@daeus I had another question related to your article. In the case of a short story, do you think a character’s yearning should be fulfilled by the end?
@sam-kowal Thanks, that was super helpful! Your first idea sparked what I think is going to be a large element of the plot now. (Character A has a project they need to finish, but because they’re…[Read more]

@dekreel This is actually a hilarious question bc he already basically lives in Antartica (it’s my fanatasy world’s version of it, anyways) so he’d choose that.
@aislinn-mollisong Michael would rather be a scholar (he sorta already is lol) but he doesn’t rly care for animals.

@daeus I think you may have misunderstood me, because I agree with you! I don’t know if you’re familiar with the scene sequel structure or not (K. M. Weiland has some articles on it, I think) but stories usually come to me with characters and their arcs and possible sequels that would be important to them. From there I flesh out the scenes, the…[Read more]

@princessfoo This was a hard one because I’d definitely choose a poorly made movie (less time wasted lol), but after I thought about it I think Michael would rather read a poorly written book, because he reads a LOT and is a really fast reader, plus he doesn’t watch a lot of movies.

@daeus That is helpful, thank you!
While this doesn’t exactly pertain to plot, this: “Internal monologue that lacks subtlety is one of the biggest problems I see in modern fiction” really caught my attention because I can see that I’ve had a tendency to do that as well. Subtext in internal monologue is something I’m going to try and pay more…[Read more] -

I’m trying to outline a short story and thought I’d ask for help with brainstorming. What I have so far for the story, is that character A gets stuck out in the rain, and catches a cold/fever. Character B tries to look after them, like make them warm soup or whatever. They knew each other before the story, but aren’t really close friends yet.
Chara…[Read more] -

@singforjoy RMS Titanic is definitely up there in my favorites. Agh. So hard to choose ONE because I love most of them (Omaha Beach is a little too intense for me, haha.) I really like Spirit Of St. Louis and Voyager 1, though. I also like his stuff he’s done under the name of Port Blue. I also listen to his Owl City album Ocean Eyes like *all*…[Read more]
