I have a soft spot for the reverse of what I’ve said previously. Additionally:
I love seeing characters put together surprises for someone they love (like a gift, or planning a special dinner, etc.)
I like seeing characters just having fun spending time together. This shows the reader that they genuinely enjoy one another’s company.
I love seeing…[Read more] -

@valtmy
I should probably clarify that I’m not saying these things should never be used, but they should be used intentionally. Perhaps you are trying to make a point about how people idealize romantic relationships, and think that a bf/gf will solve all their problems. -

@valtmy
This is not only used in romance, but I see it used a lot in that context. I personally really dislike when writers use misunderstandings to create conflict, and every time I think “If they could spend five minutes talking to each other, this would not be an issue.” If you do use miscommunication to create tension in a relationship, I…[Read more] -

@jenwriter17 I’d wondered that too. He said they’d be available here on KP. 🙂
And that’s so cool! What are you planning on publishing? -

@daeus My favorite author is James Riley, though I’m not sure what his website is called or how to contact him, but I’m sure if you search James Riley Story Thieves you’d find something.
The ladies who put together the Go Teen Writers blog also come to mind. You could see if any of them would be interested. 🙂 -

@mnvalentine Yes, I think the effect previous events have had on the characters is super important to keep in mind! Thanks 🙂

@dragon-snapper
I think that can be effective, but in the sequel I’m working on right now the external antagonist isn’t the main conflict of the story. I think it would be misleading if I did that in this instance.
I think it’s very important to think of it as a *new* book. If there’s nothing new, then there’s not really a point in telling the…[Read more] -

@mnvalentine Yes! I think showing the reader who the characters are presently and how things around them are different now is very important.
Is it necessary to review events of the previous book if they’re not relevant to the current events?
And I’m not sure I quite understand your last question. Could you maybe elaborate a bit?(Also, I love…[Read more]

I’m on the quest for tips on writing the opening of a second book. It has different needs/challenges from the opening of a standalone or first book in a series. I’d like to hear some wisdom from fellow kapeefers! 🙂

@valtmy If you want to have characters on individual cycles, my advice is to look at your main characters first, most specifically the characters that will be fighting each other throughout the story, so you can design their cycles to complement and contrast each other.
Perhaps their first element is related to when they first stepped on special…[Read more] -

Tadaaa! Presenting Theresa Caelan! @seekjustice
This was the sketch, but then I decided to color it as well:
I didn’t think to ask about a background. I just did some generic indication of vegetation behind her haha. Oh well. *disappears in a puff of graphite dust*

I’m with @sam-kowal taking the survey made me want to implement every answer I came up with, haha. Time to go write better books!
@daeus I’m interested to see the results of the survey. Do you know yet where they’ll be available?

1. I’m going to differ with @Daeus and say I think it’s a cool twist if everyone must use the same element. I think you could come up with other things to differentiate the characters from one another. Maybe fighting styles are a big deal, or people are divided by who trained them to use the magic properly.
2. Do the characters trapped…[Read more]

@seekjustice I’ve been thinking about drawing someone’s character on here, so I guess I can give it a try! (It’s helpful you give an actress as reference, too.) Did you have a particular hairstyle in mind?
