@sarah-h Duolingo is an awesome resource for language learning! I’m also learning Spanish currently, so if you want a non-judgemental practice buddy, I’d be more than happy to lend a hand! 😉 I need help myself since I’ll probably be interning somewhere in Latin/South America this coming summer. 🙂
@bluejay That profile pic is legit one of my…[Read more]

LOL! I wasn’t offended at all! XD XD XD I was just letting ya know I was jumping in on that prayer request. 😉 No sweat at all! I just wanted to jump the gun and pray. 8D Sorry for the confusion. *chills in corner of social awkwardness creators*

Josiah DeGraaf replied to the topic Structure and Character Arcs in the forum Characters 9 years, 7 months ago
@mark-kamibaya: Haven’t read McKee yet, but he’s rather high on my reading list. Hopefully I’ll be able to get to his book soon. Since I’m not as familiar with competing structures, because of how broad the three act structure is, my view tends to be that most stories work well with following that basic structure, albeit with certain tweaks…[Read more]

Does the Hero’s Journey count as one (e.g. Star Wars)? That’d probably be my favorite if I had to pick one. That being said (as is probably evident from the fact that I write free-verse poetry), I’m a lot like @hope in that I just kinda go with whatever is happening in the story. If it follows a structure, great. If not, it’s not a huge concern as…[Read more]

I’m only really familiar with the Three Act Structure and the Writer’s Journey. Haven’t even heard of the other ones. I prefer the Three Act Structure as it’s the most flexible and makes the most sense. I personally use K.M. Weiland’s variant of the Three Act Structure when writing. IMO, the Writer’s Journey template isn’t incredibly helpful and…[Read more]

@overcomer I am a huge fan of this! Definitely something that I imagine being read at a coffee house type of event. I think it was pretty solid there until the very end, and then I think you lost some momentum with a few unwieldy stanzas. The last stanza was good though. 🙂 I love the motif of “waiting to be written, waiting to be read” that you…[Read more]

Josiah DeGraaf replied to the topic Alternative Historical Fiction Book Premise in the forum Novel Idea Critiques 9 years, 8 months ago
@clairec: Tbh, that premise probably isn’t enticing enough to make me really want to read a story. I’m a bit confused about what the main plot is and how her service as a nurse connects to destroying the contents of a secret safe. Is this a spy thriller, action adventure, gritty war story, [insert-other-genres-here]? A good premise should be…[Read more]

Sarah Spradlin replied to the topic Why We Do This in the forum General Writing Discussions 9 years, 8 months ago
@bluejay The struggle is so real. Like, I’ll be walking around at school mad for no reason, and then it occurs to me that I haven’t written anything in a few weeks. xD And then I’m like “TO THE LIBRARY computer so I can words for a little while, ‘kay everyone?”

LOVE THIS IDEA! *high five* @Dragon-Snapper Also love all these awesome responses! Y’all are some pretty motivated people. 🙂
Reasons I Write:
1) It’s how I process things. (This applies to poetry especially.)
2) I can learn (a surprisingly large amount) from what I write.
3) Writing is a teaching tool. But a really cool, not boring one, so…[Read more] -

Woohoo! Awesome job stepping in, Tessa! 🙂
My votes:
1) Through the Looking Glass
2) The Hobbit (Or LotR in general, am I right, y’all?)
3) The Butterfly Lion (That one just sounds cool.) -

@bluejay YASSSSSSSSSS! ALWAYS SUBMIT!
As far as ideas go, you could totally do a series of poems on the miracles of Jesus. That would be really awesome. 🙂

@kate-flournoy: Count of Monte Cristo is one of my two favorite books (right up there with Brothers Karamazov), so it would be hard to top it, but I do have high expectations for Les Mis, so we’ll have to see. 😉

Josiah DeGraaf replied to the topic Favorites? in the forum Book Discussions 9 years, 8 months ago
@kate-flournoy: Haven’t read Hunchback of Notre Dame yet, so I have no opinions to share. =P I actually haven’t really read any of Victor Hugo, just seen the movie for Les Mis… >.> I should probably work on changing that eventually!
