Josiah DeGraaf replied to the topic Recommendations Requested in the forum Poetry 7 years, 6 months ago
@anne-of-lothlorien Well, I should probably preface this by saying that I’m not much of a poetry person… Most poetry just doesn’t connect with me, and I grew to appreciate it some during college but still don’t fully “get” it. =P
That being said, I do like George Herbert and Emily Dickinson a fair bit. Alexander Pope is also pretty good–and…[Read more]

@winter-rose Well, the really awesome thing is that even when you aren’t ready for whatever is thrown in your path, when I look back, what strikes me is not how hard it was but how faithful God was during those times. 🙂 While it may be tough, the moments I’ve felt closest to God have come during those times, which is a humbling but encouraging…[Read more]

Josiah DeGraaf started the topic Discussion for Video Fifteen: Theme & Major Characters in the forum Discussion Questions 7 years, 6 months ago
Choose a book where a major character complements the protagonist and analyze how the author does that effectively. Which of the three methods of connecting arcs does the author use? How does this major character’s arc complement the protagonist’s arc and deepen the story’s theme?

Take the action-reaction sequence you came up with last time, and add two more pairs of action-reaction sequences to that sequence. Make sure that you’re building your theme from scene to scene using the techniques discussed in this lesson.

@anne-of-lothlorien Ah. 🙁 Miscarriage is really hard. I can only imagine how much harder it is when you’ve been wanting kids for a while. Sorry to hear that, and I’m praying that God sustains her and the whole family during this time.

I believe both @michael-stanton and myself graduated from college this year. 😀 The biggest thing I learned during my time at college wasn’t related to academics at all but was on the more personal level of what it means to live with a focus on pleasing God rather than other people around me. Still have a bunch I need to learn on that front, but…[Read more]

Josiah DeGraaf replied to the topic Perfect Parents? in the forum Characters 7 years, 6 months ago
@bethanysinkyroses I’ll second what Daeus said about the importance of characters who journey from darkness to light. I’ll also say that I dislike the current trend in fiction where parents are incompetent and merely obstacles in the protagonist’s path. =P
That being said, I don’t think writing perfect parents is a good solution to that problem…[Read more]

Josiah DeGraaf replied to the topic Question about the webinar and theme mastery course in the forum Film 7 years, 6 months ago
@northerner Yes–it will be recorded. 🙂 We’ll be sending out a link sometime after the webinar Monday or Tuesday.
The normal price of Theme Mastery will /probably/ be $147 (we’re still ironing down the details), but we’ll be running a sale where it’s only $97 for the first week of its release.

I’ll second Woodland Quill and Helping Writers Become Authors. Storymonger is also good and is run by a guy who used to write for KP 4-5 years back, but the site is no longer being updated so you’ll need to read the archives: http://thestorymonger.com/ Similar thing with Bryan Davis’ website; he’s still posting critiques, but to get his writing…[Read more]

Josiah DeGraaf replied to the topic A Time To Die in the forum Book Discussions 7 years, 6 months ago
@winter-rose I can’t actually figure out why I didn’t feel a connection. =P Her thoughts seemed to be a bit generic at times, but it also may just be that some characters don’t click for everyone, and this was just a case where the protagonist didn’t click for me. So I don’t know if it’s necessarily the fault of the book.

Josiah DeGraaf replied to the topic A Time To Die in the forum Book Discussions 7 years, 6 months ago
@winter-rose I never felt emotionally invested in the protagonist, so the book didn’t move me as much as it did for other people here. :/ That being said, the book didn’t annoy me, and given that most dystopia books and most Christian fiction books annoy me, that caused this book to stand out. I also appreciated Brandes’ gutsiness in making Parvin…[Read more]
