Perhaps the largest factor is what is the purpose of the torture scene. If it is for historical purposes or if it is the culmination of all the struggles your protagonist has been facing, I would say go into more of the details. I see what you’re saying @hope. I think Megamind probably just starts his character arc lower than most. 😛
I will admit it was funny. I just can’t shake this weird feeling after I watch it, though. Not a happy “Oh that was a good story”, but more of just an “ugh”. I don’t know.

The rhythm and rhyme are absolutely beautiful— exceptional work, @hope. The only line I’m not sure about is ‘Falling from air’. It seems to have too few syllables. I would try something like ‘Abides in the air’.

And as far as I can tell, it fits very well with the story. Very well indeed. 🙂

Here’s my idea. It’s all based off of the theme of joy. First, how about the birds have a special role in this society for nurturing and fostering joy? @hope I’ve had exactly the same problem. For my first book, I started out with seven sub-rulers in one of the fantasy kingdoms, but then I changed it to eight and gave them all new names.
