@hope That is very true and in some ways a benefit to the story, but I still have some things against her. Her calmness seems at times to be almost absurd. The calmness makes her seem less human to me, which is of course too bad. What makes it even worse is that when she hears how her father died, she gets all pale, which (although well and good)…[Read more]

Ok, so by now hopefully you’ve read chapters three and four. If so, it’s time to pick them apart.
I’ll start by…[Read more]

Thanks, @winter-rose . 🙂 It’s coming together. There isn’t a lot of organizing left to do, really, it’s just time-consuming. It’s kinda like treasure hunting, only a little more tedious.
Good luck getting unlost. 😉
Have you ever listened to the Really Serious Writing Show podcast? It’s great. I took a break from my notes and had fun…[Read more]

Kate Flournoy replied to the topic Capitalizing His Name in the forum General Writing Discussions 8 years, 4 months ago
@Hope I think that would work. I really do. Because when you think about it, (I assume you’re talking about Song of the Sword here) since the Prince was down amongst the people as one of them, it makes sense that he would be considered one of them. If you don’t capitalize it, the sense of him becoming one of them is intensified.

@Hope hmmmm… the capitalization of His name always seems to give it more awe and reverence. Not that there’s anything worshipful in the form of a letter or that it is wrong to do one or the other, but visually, His is more impressive and impacting than his. So I guess it depends on your goal. Do you want that? Or for the sake of your story would…[Read more]

@hope I don’t see any problem with it, but it just doesn’t seem necessary.

Sherlock would say he never guesses, @hope . He makes observations and deduces from them. When there are several possible deductions to make he chooses the most likely based on the facts. So there is very little guesswork involved. It is more clever thinking. 😉
I wouldn’t call Holmes unhappy, @sarah-h . He is most happy when investigating a…[Read more]

@Hope exactly. Have any of you ever just sat down on a whim and started writing in the most sarcastic voice you could manage? Just thrown caution to the winds and hammered out a poem or a story or just any random piece of writing for the fun of seeing how much you could exaggerate? I’ve done that. It’s incredibly easy, somehow. Easier than being…[Read more]

Ugh… I feel you @overcomer. And I don’t even do much prep work. A very basic outline, nothing else. But especially with editing it seems like it’s much easier to decide what to edit than it is to actually sit down and do it. 😛
I shall be very, very glad when I’m done editing this book. For numerous reasons. Not the least of which is I’ll…[Read more]

Well @Hope *pulls long, solemn professor-face, folds hands gravely in lap* time spent on philosophy is never wasted. Philosophical thought is the magnifying lens through which we view our world. *nods solemnly* The clearer understanding we have of philosophy, the less confusing the world is.

@Hope yay! You got it! I narrowed it down to pretty much that last night, but I wanted to look at it from every possible angle before I said anything. Bravo! I didn’t know you were a philosopher… 😉

@hope *claps* Very well done. The fallacy is equivocation if you think about it hard enough.

@hope This is just a random note, but make sure to present the villagers side of things. I mean make it clear and convincing why they want to do what they want to do. Show their POV.

Hm… *thinkthinkthink* Hm… pleasure… maybe… hey, would it work if it were a plant? Like, a grapevine or something? I don’t know why grapevine— probably because it puts me in mind of wine. 😛 But it could be— oh! Wait… wait wait wait… sorry, I’m thinking out loud here. Maybe it’s some forbidden but delicious…[Read more]
