Josiah DeGraaf replied to the topic Discussion for Video Six: Positive Character Arc in the forum Discussion Questions 7 years, 3 months ago
@perfectfifths Ah; I see. Yeah, I would probably fit it into the positive arc then. Here’s a question to consider that you may find helpful: if you were going to go through and revise Sutcliffe’s book, how would you change the story/the protagonist’s character arc to make the story more enjoyable to you? I find that when I do this with books I…[Read more]

@perfectfifths Oh–I may have read that book myself a long time ago! I forget, but I know I’ve read a fair number of Sutcliffe’s works. Whether or not its a complex arc depends on how long it takes. If the initial negative arc is just a couple initial chapters or a prologue or something, I would probably say it doesn’t count since that’s just part…[Read more]

@perfectfifths So just to clarify, currently the midpoint represents a backsliding for Amrei? Backsliding can be a very effective tactic to take; however, generally that kind of moment like you’re describing happens better at the third plot point (I get into that in lesson nine on weaving theme into your story structure). I’d recommend choosing a…[Read more]

Josiah DeGraaf replied to the topic Classic book Suggestions in the forum Book Discussions 7 years, 3 months ago
Divine Comedy is in a tier unto itself in my book, but be aware that it takes a couple readings to fully get the book. I recommend Anthony Esolen’s translation of the work. After that, my Romantic/Realist triad of novels I like to recommend are Crime & Punishment, Pride & Prejudice, and Frankenstein.

@majerot Wow–that’s an impressive collection of work there! Also, that list of favorite authors is awesome. I can see many of my own favorites also there–particularly Dostoevsky. ^_^ My favorite of his is probably Brothers Karamazov; how about yourself?

Hey @salome01w4g! Couple recommendations! First, like @that_writer_girl_99 said, I’d recommend creating a file for all your characters where you record information like that. That makes it really easy to check and make sure you’re not contradicting yourself. 🙂
Second, on the whole deleting words issue, while I know that not getting to a certain…[Read more]

@JosiahDeBoer Weeks writes fantasy; Swavely writes sci-fi set in a slightly-futuristic earth (I’m sure there’s a sub-genre title for that side of sci-fi, but I don’t read sci-fi enough to know :P). Swavely’s one of my favorite Christian spec fic writers. Fair word of warning though: both authors have some sexual content in their books (especially…[Read more]

@warrenluther04 Haven’t seen the old Adam West stuff, but I definitely agree that Homecoming is fantastic! Vulture is probably my favorite villain in the MCU right now.
Kingdom Pen was founded in 2011, but I actually didn’t join on until 2013 and didn’t start running the site until last year. The current website was put together in 2013/2014 and…[Read more]

@josiahdeboer Ha–you must be! xD Brandon Sanderson, Orson Scott Card (he probably takes the cake as favorite author for me, but Sanderson’s a close second), Brent Weeks, Stephen Lawhead, N.D. Wilson, and Dave Swavely.

@salome01w4g No problem! I wrote an article on the subject a while back if you want to check it out: https://kingdompen.org/foil-characters-what-they-are-and-how-to-use-them/ Basically it’s when you create a combination of similarities and differences between two characters (or two situations) in order to draw attention to them as a pair so the…[Read more]

Thanks @shannon Yeah; it’s hard for me to know which was harder–leaving my church or leaving all the college friends I’d been with for four years. God has consistently brought me to great new church families, though, so I trust I’ll be able to find one in North Carolina.

@Salome01W4G Nice! Sounds like a solid premise with a lot of potential for foil characters & situations (which happen to pretty much be my favorite thing if you haven’t seen me writing about them yet. 😉 )
