Good thoughts Mark,
This reminds me that the blush rule is only so perfect. There are portions of the bible I would not feel comfortable reading in public, but guess what the bible is men’t for. Yep, reading in public (and private of course). Still, do you really want that awkward feeling when you read your work aloud? I don’t think so. Try to…[Read more]

Yeah, that nuclear stuff is way beyond me. I think the only science I could ever understand was genetics.

No doubt.
But the fact remains that I never could have come up with anything like that, and I am that weird kind of person who is interested in fission and fusion and the splitting of the atom.

What ever impressiveness it may possess is, I assure you, not a result of my science knowledge. No doubt, it is my lack of knowledge in that area which has allowed me to break beyond the bonds of sensibility into the ridiculous, but the gripping.

Maybe if what I said actually had anything scientific about it. Anything remotely legitimate was stollen from a discussion I had with a friend who is the one with the scientific genius. I just added some random fancy, and a few scincey sounding words I made up from some greek and latin roots. I really have no scientific skill at all above the…[Read more]

I’ll start off with the topic of cursing. You really should go read that article Kate mentioned. Personally, I don’t entirely agree with it, but I won’t deny that it makes some good points. The one I personally took home was, “Will cursing really add anything to your story?” I’m not sure I have a definite answer to that one, but it is one you…[Read more]

Good… grief. Did you say you wanted to run a ridiculously poly-cultural farm and write in the winter? I think you should drop that right now. Science needs you, Daeus. It would be selfish and unethical to rob the field of science of your genius.
Really.

A timesaber you ask? Well, since I came up with the idea, I should know how it works, right? Well, ahh … Alright, Here’s something I came up with.
“The timesaber was invented some 280 yrs ago by the Chief of micropartical engineering for the star cluster 6H3. Its basic components are a handle and a ‘blade’ which extends out of the handle upon…[Read more]

@Rosey. *sigh* I suppose you’re right. Sniff. Sniffle. Sniffsniffsniffsniffle. *sigh* Who wrote the Peleg Chronicles? What genre are they? They sound like fantasy, but titles can be deceiving. 😛 I suppose I might just have to look them up if I ever get the time. And that’s a big if… maybe when I’m eighty three.

You know, this is actually a very valid concern. As I believe I have said before, there is a difference between what we write and what we promote. That being said, I have an opinion— treat it as such. 😀 I am not one to say whether or not we should have cursing in our stories and have my opinion treated as gospel, as I am a human being, and…[Read more]

@Kate
Exactly. 😉
XD Well, you’re never read the Peleg Chronicles, so we’re even. 😛@Mark
Great points. The foreshadowing thing definitely makes it seem more real once the character does die because they were sort of expecting it because they were warned. They just need to be shown that the story can work without the character. But they also…[Read more] -

The first book I wrote was a sci-fi. And I don’t even read a sci-fi a lot. 😛 I definitely agree with what Mark said. Make it make sense. Explain yourself concerning the gadgets and such and don’t make it be completely unbelievable. Actually, quite a few of my book gadgets I’ve seen the starts of in real life. Like robotic suits for soldiers and a…[Read more]

Wow, thanks guys. Both of you made really good points. @Daeus— a timesaber? How would that work? That sounds really cool. And thanks for the tip about keeping the technology ahead of our time. I’d actually given a fair amount of thought to that. I mean, the world in my novel (‘Operation Nebula’) is basically centered around one giant…[Read more]

Awesome that you play volleyball! I used to play it in the 3rd grade, but sadly I haven’t played any other sports on a “real” team since then. I do like to play soccer and volleyball with my siblings and at our church camp outs though. If I could play a sport I’d go for soccer, but like you were mentioning, there’s just not enough time to do…[Read more]

Not that I’m an expert on this, but if you’re going to write science fiction, you’re probably going to need to get into the realm of theoretical physics or like topics to provide the science sounding stuff your unscientific world will be based on. This isn’t to say that you need to understand all that complicated stuff that some of the brightest…[Read more]

@Rosey. Yeah, you’re right, actually. It sort of gave a twist to the rule, maybe playing with breaking it, but in the end it worked out amazingly. You’ve never read the Lord of the Rings?!!!? Oh, you should! You don’t know what you’re missing.

Okay, guys. I’m not sure whether this ought to have been put in general writing discussions or novel ideas, but who cares and here goes. This not a discussion topic, I guess. I just want a lot of opinions. Everyone has one of those, so this shouldn’t be too hard. 😛
I have written solely historical fiction and fantasy ever since I started writing.…[Read more] -

I like it pretty well, though haven’t written anything much in that era. A little in Ireland but that’s about it.
The Peleg Chronicles kind of spoiled me for that genre though. It kind of has a medieval feel to it as far as government and technology. And the author said he’s trying to expand the genre of that, so I started a book set there, though…[Read more] -

I won’t say I write in any era, since I haven’t been writing in earnest very long, but historical fiction is my favorite genre and I love the middle ages. I’m sure I’ll probably mix the two together some day.
