Ethryndal started the topic Of Bad Guys and Beasts in the forum Fantasy 9 years, 5 months ago
Hello all! I come to you seeking your highly valued and respected opinions.
Here’s my trouble: I have these creatures called trogs and gremlins in my world, which are nasty little minions of the Tashar, my evil over-lord. Unfortunately, it is extremely annoying when these two creatures are together (which is quite often) as I am constantly having…[Read more]

Ethryndal replied to the topic How naming affects characterization in the forum Characters 9 years, 5 months ago
@leumeister Well let’s see…
I would guess that Amadeus Janssen and Pandora Flynn are villains, and James Manning and Marcus Coleman are good guys. I can’t decide about Jackson Levi (maybe because I started overthinking it 🙂 ) but the name kind of hits me as being able to go both ways; a dashing, flamboyant hero, or a dashing, flamboyant villain.

@warrioroftherealm John Silver…I think…
“I know this place. I got beat up in that alley.”

@his-instrument Tangled? The Tavern Thug Guy with the hook?
How about “On a scale of one to ten, how would you rate your pain level?”

@anne-of-lothlorien Seriously though, you could really do something with that. The white people of your dreams, dancing the dance of moonlight? Don’t throw that one out anytime soon.
You know you’re a writer when the best dream you ever had is the one where your main character was bullying you, just because you got to hear what she sounds like.

@anne-of-lothlorien It’s the best kind of blackmail, telling your siblings when they’re being annoying that you’re going to base a villain off of them… though I think they’re on to me now, since I haven’t ever actually done it. 🙂
@jess I accidentally wrote myself into my main character, but didn’t realize it until about three days ago when my…[Read more] -

@jadamae Oh no, that’s awful. My sister has Lymes, and I know that it’s a pretty terrible thing. I’ll definitely be praying.

@kate-flournoy It’s a lonely life we unicorns live….though it is fun telling people that only 0.5% of the population have my personality type. 🙂
@sleepwalkingmk Well I’m glad I’m not the only one who has sarcastic character scape-goats. 🙂 Writing is a pretty handy thing for coping though. When a lot of things are happening in my life (and…[Read more]

Anyone ever noticed how events in their life somehow end up in their writing? Like a couple months ago, I went through a minor depression, due to my INTJ tendencies to suppress my emotions, and rereading some of the things I’d written then, I noticed they all had a darker atmosphere than most of my other writing. I also had a character who ended…[Read more]

@emma-flournoy Yes, the Anthony Andrews one. I liked it, which is why I decided to read the book. Books are always better. Especially ones written in the 1900’s.

@hope Ah yes, you’re the one who I’ve heard from a trusted source on this thread that has, and I quote, “all the weapons, even a sword”. I stand in complete awe. And good luck on NaNo! I don’t know how you people can take the stress. If I were to do it, my family would probably lock me in the closet out of self preservation…:)

You know you’re a writer when you can never read a book or watch a movie without lapsing into an intense inner argument about how capably the writers handled the character development or plot structure. And yes, with the strange writers’ voice in your head. I’ve named mine Siri. I turn her on when I need to practice being outgoing.

@emma-flornouy I watched the movie first, but I’m reading the original book now. Books are always better. *grins wildly like a lunatic* Because I like it. Very much.
And in a way, I agree, Thrainduil was a jerk. But I also find him to be a very interesting character, (sorry, @anne-of-lothlorien) primarily because of how his backstory affects his…[Read more]

@anne-of-lothlorien Hey, when you master defying gravity, wanna teach me? You never know when you might be stuck on a falling tower.
And Galadriel is choking at my very improper spelling of “do you want to”.
My studies actually take place in Lothlorien. Strange that we should not have met until now, but such is the way of the Elves, I suppose.…[Read more]

Oh, gee. Little kids are hard. I have a nine year old in my stories, and I’m constantly having to slow myself down to a much more basic view of life when I write her.
Like all human beings, you find such vast differences from one to the next, but they’re harder to write about, probably because their minds and thought processes aren’t as complex…[Read more]

@writefury Thanks! And yeah, the names a bit hard to swallow. I was going to name one of my characters it, but for some reason I kept mentally referring to myself as it, so it’s somehow become my unofficial name for everything.
@anne-of-lothlorien Wow, what’s it like being an adopted Elf? I’m only an intern… But I do know a bit of Elvish, so I…[Read more]

@sierra-r That is hilarious! In a really strange sort of way… Ah, true friends. The things they will do for each other. 🙂
@anne-swiftblade Ok, one sword is bad enough, but TWO? This world is so unfair… 🙂
