Lin replied to the topic What Makes a Mystery? in the forum General Writing Discussions 5 years, 8 months ago
@gracie-j According to Google, the definition of mystery is: “a novel, play, or movie dealing with a puzzling crime, especially a murder.”
I haven’t read that many mysteries in my lifetime, but I did enjoy the ones which I did read. I think that a good mystery is one which allows the reader to guess at what is going to happen, and make it…[Read more]

@ugroza Oh man I’ve got a lot lol! I like Jocelyn, because she’s just so much fun and a real bright spot, but I also have other characters I adore! Like Grimm, who is so sweet but also stuck in the past, and November who is quirky and adorable! And….UGH PAXTON. A little boy whose been used and bullied for his entire life.
so many.

@gracie-j Thanks!! And yes I have quite a few suspects, and each one could have done it so it definitely keeps u guessing! That and the fact that the actual killer isn’t really a suspect makes for a major plot twist. Also, Jocelyn has the motive, but not the means. Motive being, after her Uncle dies, she becomes Ringmaster, leader of Cirque, w…[Read more]

@gracie-j OOH MAN THANK U!! Ahhh the second tip is WONDERFUL!! And yea, I think with Lyn (Jocelyn) hers will be more of, she has to because she was found with the victim’s body, and is the primary suspect. But she’s been fairly sheltered, making her a bit naive, so she isn’t a vengeful person. In fact, she’s horrified at the thought that someone…[Read more]

@ugroza Fun topic! Ahh I have way too many characters…and I do like all of them to some degree…
I feel like the more complex my character is, the more I like them, but I also feel like half the time it’s only pity. There are ones which are fun to write, of course. Hmm…
I’ll have to think about this for a little while! Who is your favorite…[Read more]

@gracie-j Your collages look fantastic! I really like the frames you chose for the quotes for your characters.
Here is a collage for a short story of mine that I’ll probably ask for critique on in the near future…

@gracie-j Aight here is the playlist I just made for one of my short stories, “I Hid Beneath My Umbrella So the Adults Wouldn’t See Me Cry”, which is a mouthful so I just call it “Umbrella”. I tried to order it best I could with transitions that match the mood as well as songs that matched the different parts of the story.

@writerlexi1216 If the folder button isn’t working, then it’s probably a bug. Otherwise, you could try pinning your image to Pinterest and then using the URL.

@gracie-j To be completely honest, creating collages and stuff have helped me to get to know my characters a little bit better, since usually they’re just an idea until I start developing them on paper. To me, we’re like two strangers until I start writing them, haha.
