@Northerner I have no idea where my first post went. Here. Have it again.
Okay guys.
@Hope gave me a book with three of G.K. Chesterton’s novels in it as an early birthday present, and though I have only read one of them so far it completely blew my mind.
It was The Ball and the Cross.Has anyone else read it? If so, can we please discuss how…[Read more]

Shaina replied to the topic How naming affects characterization in the forum Characters 7 years, 8 months ago
The way I name characters is that I look at their personality and find a name that fits them. Which is either from the top of my head, my baby name book :), or I make one up if it is fantasy. What I love doing is taking a common name, like Mark, and flip some letters around so that it is still slightly the same name, but is different enough to be…[Read more]

@his-instrument @delightinlife @ethryndal @jess @jane-maree @arella-noreen @kate-flournoy Come on, guys! I can’t keep up with you!
Arella–I use roots to make names of cities too! However, the root is so obvious at some points, that I’ll have to switch a few things around at some point so that you root lovers won’t know
firsthand what means…[Read more] -

@ethryndal There have actually been times when I’ve just typed random letters and come up with names. Example: when I can’t think of anything to write (which does happen on rare occasions), my fingers usually fall in the nonsense pattern weioth. So I named a character Weioth.
@delightinlife I’ll get that fire list to you if I can find it. 🙂 -
Jess replied to the topic How naming affects characterization in the forum Characters 7 years, 8 months ago
@ethryndal, that’s alright, I’m with you 😛 I bang on the keyboard until I find sounds I like, then string them together. It’s a very refined technique, developed over a long time of use. 😛
BUT, if I want a name that means something… I, well, I go to baby name websites. *blushes*
And if I’m really stuck, I’ll think of a word I like (for…[Read more] -

You guys make my pitiful attempts at naming look so lame… XD
@DelightInLife Basically, when I need a name for my fantasy story, I just sort of…come up with one. I start putting random word syllables together, until something like Liriel emerges. (Liriel, by the way, is the main character in my WIP) I take a letter I think sounds nice, like L…[Read more]

Jane Maree replied to the topic How naming affects characterization in the forum Characters 7 years, 8 months ago
@DelightInLife the method I use when naming characters is often to search up say ‘boys names meaning suchandsuch’ if I want a particular meaning. I sometimes do the ‘unique/rare girl names’ or ‘Irish/Gaelic/Welsh/Spanish/ect. names meaning blah-blah.’ Because then I can find one that fits with my setting.
If it’s medieval fiction, what country is…[Read more] -

Wow guys, there are no words for the awesomeness of this topic. Fellow word-root lovers— group hug! 😀
@DelightInLife I don’t have time right now to do as long a post as I could, but starting out, I basically figured out what kind of feel/culture I wanted the name to belong to/have, then went and searched on Google ‘old…[Read more]

@aysia-serene, you’re not alone in your lateness! *ponders if that is a real word*
Welcome to KP, @delightinlife! My name is Anne and I am the resident pirate, but I am sort of not always around. Pirating and writing take up a lot of time!
Welcome again! -

@Delightinlife Hi, Bella! Welcome to this wonderful place of craziness and writing! I loved the Bronze Bow! (And Pride and Prejudice was pretty good too) Have you read The Giver by Lois Lowry also? I liked Number the Stars, but not as much as the Giver. 😉
I hope to see you around the forum! Just jump right in! 😀 -

@DelightInLife Hey, Bella! Welcome to our little corner of insanity, dragons, and a healthy overdose of words! The Bronze Bow! *excited glitter* That is one of my favorite books!
