Hi @emily-d!
Rhythm (aka meter) is a great thing to use even if you also use rhyme. The first thing to do is to learn the basic patterns of meter. You can easily learn about those online. I also recommend the book The Roar On The Other Side to learn poetry.

@winter-rose Yes, but losing a hand… Reading such book is not doing my own characters any favors. XD
One thing I found interesting about this series is that they are almost more biographical (which is kind of the point, I think). The plot didn’t seem as orderly and structured as most novels would be, rather it was a life; a string of events. I…[Read more]

@winter-rose *is here for you* I’ve read them! Love the series. The first book… yes. Murderous would be a good way to describe it. I was stunned when Parvin actually lost her hand. And it didn’t surprise me when Jude died, but still… *sniffs* He was such a great character. One of my favorite things about this series was how human Parvin was. I…[Read more]

@dragon-snapper I love chapter titles; ones that grab my attention without telling me what will happen. Or funny ones. The chapter titles in Percy Jackson, for example… I love just looking thought the table of contents because they’re so hilarious.

@cloudy This basically a video chat thing?
I don’t think I’ll be on it. I need to discipline myself. Video’s too addicting. I might drop in on rare occasions though.

@Northerner Yes, Kingdom Pen is wonderful. I don’t know where I’d be without the things I’ve learned and the people I’ve met here.

Daeus replied to the topic Balancing Dialogue and Description in the forum General Writing Discussions 7 years, 6 months ago
@Holly-Nelson-Gray If you haven’t yet, check out our recently published articles on writing descriptions. I think once you have a full understanding of the potential of descriptions and dialogue, your brain will naturally sort out how to balance them.
Your problem probably isn’t so much that you have too much dialogue, but that you don’t have…[Read more]

Daeus replied to the topic Beginners' Tips For Writing Science Fiction in the forum General Writing Discussions 7 years, 6 months ago
@emily-d You don’t have to read a mountain of books. The more you can read the better, but 5-10 could get you by. Reading sci-fi to learn about it is different than writing yourself into it. You’ll never know the full potentials of your genre or be able to avoid the way overused cliches unless you read the genre.

@that_writer_girl_99 I second A Tale of Two Cities and Les Mis. Also (more than any other classic ever) The Count of Monte Cristo. After that: Ben Hur, The Scarlet Letter, Crime and Punishment, The Ball and the Cross. (Let me know if you want more.)
