Oh, yes. And you should read. Just a slight recommendation.

@kate-flournoy That’s because it deserves it.
Alan Paton wrote it. All I know is that he was a South African pastor.

Cry, The Beloved Country.
This book ties with Ben Hur for me, taking third place as my favorite books ever. This book masters theme better than any book I’ve ever read and it is a Christian novel. It’s also the most famous novel from South Africa ever. This is not a novel with high emotion, but you might very well search all your life and never…[Read more]

I like the story concept. It sounds like it could turn into something really good, but the opening paragraph as it is doesn’t excite me that much.
The opening paragraph doesn’t turn me off, but it doesn’t suck me in either. I was intrigued by the description “mischevious and slightly sulky door”, but overall, the paragraph was too wordy, and I…[Read more]

Hey y’all,
I mentioned a while ago that I had emotionally hurt my mom with some content in my story she perceived as graphic (even though most of you on here probably wouldn’t call it very graphic). After writing two articles to express my views on the subject which she still had some disagreement on, I finally got the opportunity to really talk…[Read more]

@anne-of-lothlorien Well, bluejay’s poems had a visual pattern, which is bonus points for her, but a real visual poem is a bit more. It’s a poem shaped in a picture or pattern that has symbolic meaning to the poem itself. For instance, you could have a poem about yourself shaped like a human figure. You could have a poem about Jesus shaped like a…[Read more]

@i-j-anderson Welcome! I enjoy watercolor too, though I paint mainly landscapes. When I get my paints out, which isn’t often now… What kind of short stories do you write? Contemporary? Fantasy?

@Anne-of-Lothlorien I like them both. I guess I may be strange that way, but unless something is bad, I can generally enjoy both the movie and the book in different ways. They act less like children in the movie, and their goal is more important. I wasn’t sure about the movie the first time I saw it, but I’ve grown to like it. And I like the book.…[Read more]

Well… I do, but I haven’t posted on it in like six months and it’s still on hold. I used to post writing there, but I’ve stopped doing that. I may however do book reviews on there eventually.

@Sarah-H Ok, good stuff here. I guess I mostly agree. We could use some good ‘ole book burnings and all. We shouldn’t think ourselves impervious, yes.
I guess the disagreement arises because it sounds like you are saying we should avoid all darkness whatsoever. I’m not sure that’s exactly what you meant, but if that’s so, I find it problematic.…[Read more]

Hope Ann replied to the topic First or Third? in the forum General Writing Discussions 9 years, 5 months ago
@anne-of-lothlorien I haven’t, mainly because I’m not sure how I would go about such a thing. Though I have toyed with the idea now and then. Perhaps the speaker would be telling the ‘reader’ about some sort of past they can’t remember and the reader has to become the hero of the story. Hmm, now that could be a cool idea.

@i-j-anderson Welcome! (to the bestistest place on the internet specifically)
That’s awesome you live on a small scale farm. Those are the bestistest. Btw, you don’t happen to know about permaculture, do you?
Hey, you really should post one of your poems. Do you have a favorite poetry style?

Daeus replied to the topic First or Third? in the forum General Writing Discussions 9 years, 5 months ago
My preference? I’m not totally sure, but I think I tend toward third person, particularly omnipotent.
Now from what you’re saying, it sounds to me like you’d do best with a deep third person story. It could be confusing to use first person for multiple POVs (though who know? Might be the next thing.) If you’re used to first though, you might…[Read more]

Must be a pretty thick Bible with all those notes.
Not really. The pages are super thin, though durable.

And there’s three great things about the NET (New English Translation). First of all, it’s a solid translation. I’ve read through their rules and philosophy of translation and it’s all very good stuff. Second, although it’s a literal translation which means they try to translate the actual words of the text, rather than what they think the meaning…[Read more]
