@bluejay and @jess, the live-action Jungle Book is amazing! See, I grew up on the animated one. It was literally the first feature-length film I ever saw, and I used to pretend I was “the girl” (you know, the one who was carrying water at the end of the movie) and make my mom be Baloo or Mowgli. Keep in mind that this was a long time ago. I was,…[Read more]

@bluejay It’s sad how much America has commercialized Christmas and Easter. My family has never done anything with Santa Claus (is Santa Claus even a thing in Australia?) and we have a “happy birthday Jesus” celebration every year on Christmas morning with family. Easter for us is just a great time to remember Jesus’ sacrifice. A lot of churches…[Read more]

@bluejay– Awesome! That’s so cool! Writing competitions scare me. Way to be brave!
-
@julia-r Writing competitions can be scary. I felt sick as we were driving over. But it is a great reward for all the hard work put into story writing.

@bluejay The most famous opening line ever! Well, not really, but it’s up there on the most popular opening lines lists.
Good points about introducing characters. Obviously Bilbo and the hobbits needed a lot of introduction, but Tolkien did it without boring us- probably by only answering the questions that we had already asked ourselves (ie,…[Read more]

@Anna-Brie Ah, I should have guessed that. There’s only one first. 🙂 That is odd about the fireworks; over here, it’s the big cities that do it. I wonder if ours look different than yours. Lately, they’ve been coming out with shaped fireworks, like a heart or a smiley face. I don’t like them as much. Do you have that kind over there?

@Christi-eaton: SOOOOO jealous! I have never been to a Disney Park! (*bursts into sobs*) I might just have to wait for my honeymoon. What is your favorite ride/attraction/park food? I’ll try to post some of my sketches sometime. Btw, did you draw your profile pic? It’s awesome!
@bluejay: I am with you on the quotes. I have seen so many more…[Read more]

@anna-brie Please forgive my ignorance, but what is the First Fleet? I’ve not heard of that before. 🙂
@bluejay Oh, cool. My family doesn’t really celebrate Christmas or Easter either. It is a huge part of American culture; is that so in Australia? Australia Day sounds a lot like our Fourth of July, except we have fireworks. Do you do fireworks…[Read more]

@bluejay I am going to see it in two weeks! The art museum has an outdoor theater for free! I didn’t love the animated one, but it was good. (I don’t care for singing)

@Sarah-H, people have been trying hard for a while to bring Holloween in over here. I don’t think it’s much of a thing yet, but I certainly don’t like shopping so much in the couple of weeks before.
We don’t have any really big holidays apart from Christmas and Easter, but there are a couple. Australia Day id the anniversary of the First Fleet…[Read more] -

@bluejay So, right now, Americans are gearing up for the one holiday that I truly hate: Halloween. This morning I was at the store, cringing at all the holiday decorations, and I wondered, are your holidays different than ours? I’m guessing that Australians celebrate Christmas and Easter. Our three other major holidays are Fourth of July,…[Read more]

@bluejay I thought supper was an England term. We have “tea-time” (i.e. snack time) around 4, and then dinner around 7. It’s funny to learn all the little ways our cultures are different. I was wondering…wait, no. I should go over to the “where do you live” topic for that.
Is now a good time for you? It’s 2 here, and I’ll probably have lunch…[Read more]
