@Rachelle I think everything’s been covered already 😛 I would just add that the reader might feel cheated if the character seeking revenge gets away without any consequences for his actions. Usually stories that involve revenge end in the protagonist either realizing how wrong their thoughts are and “converting,” so to say, or carrying out the…[Read more]

@aratrea yes. Thank you for putting that into words, because I think that’s exactly what I’m trying to do!

@christi-eaton yep. The last time I got an actual book was for Christmas, and that was because I wanted to read it a third time and stare at the cover xD

I’ll bet that I’m the only one who didn’t want to hear about a price-drop on an author’s book in their newsletter xD
And… *whispers* I never go to the library. I live right next to one, but they never have the books I like to read 😛 I’d rather spend a few bucks on an ebook than scour every library in my city for the novel I want.

@aratrea first, I’m going to try and get my hands on some of K.M. Weiland’s writing craft books I basically learned how to plot from her blog, so I’d love to delve more into all the knowledge that she has!
I’m also going to go back through some of my favorite novels and see how the authors execute theme, plot, character arcs, etc. I’ll be able to…[Read more]

@aratrea I’m still trying to figure how I’m going to show that 😛 The idea is that the protagonist goes seeking a truth to set her free from her past and finds one that destroys it more. She then realizes what she needed all along was forgiveness (at the midpoint), and the rest of the novels is her trying to gain forgiveness but believing a lie…[Read more]

Oh, and one more thing that my mom just suggested (and I forgot to mention in the survey 😛 )
Have you thought of creating a little certificate for when the course is finished? Just a thing you can print out that says “I completed theme mastery course,” or something to that extent. It’s just a random thing, but it might be good proof that the…[Read more]

Um…put it into practice and incorporate it into every single novel I write from here on out? 😛
Seriously. I’m so excited to use everything I’ve learned for all of my novels. I feel like I’m going to spend the rest of my life mastering it, and still then discover more and more about theme.
This course was amazing amazing amazing. I just…[Read more]

THIS WAS OFFICIALLY MY FAVORITE LESSON EVER. (sorry I’m screaming xD).
I think the hardest part of writing explicitly Christian fiction is when the characters need to talk about God. There’s always the risk of it sounding incredibly preachy, when all I’m trying to do is remind a character of God. I try to make it as realistic as possible, like…[Read more]

*rubs hands together* I’ve been looking forward to this lesson 😀
Hm…in the sequel I’ve been working with, the balance is nearly equal between the themes of Forgiveness and Truth, but I’m going to work on using Forgiveness as the primary one. Thus:
Primary Theme: Forgiveness. When does one gain forgiveness for their past actions?
Major…[Read more]

@aratrea the father is a pretty minor character, so I don’t specifically have the protagonist realize that her mental state becomes the same as his, or that he influences her away from her original POV. It’s just one of those “ah-ha!” moments for the reader when they realize how similar the father and the protagonist have become. And it will…[Read more]

@aratrea the father has a similar view of truth because he’s mentally disabled, which makes it ironic because the protagonist isn’t mentally disabled at first and thinks the same way. 😀

@Jane-Maree *runs in panting* am I too late? I was gone all day looking at houses with my family. We had a dunch on the way back (dinner + lunch. don’t know who came up with that 😛 ) I’ll be editing for at least a half hour, if you’re still there.

1. Adon, a sort of spiritual mentor for the protagonist. While the protagonist is looking in physical places for truth, Adon finds the real Truth always in God. Adon also ties in to the theme of forgiveness, as he has a biblical point of view, rather than the protagonist’s broken view of being unworthy of it.
2. Tairock, a friend/acquaintance of…[Read more]
