@Sarah-H
The First Fleet was, well the First Fleet. About a thousand people on 11 ships came out from England to found the colony that was the first European settlement in Australia.We actually do have some some public holidays for things like the Queens birthday, or a show day. They’re basically days most people don’t go to work. Nothing very…[Read more]

@Kate-Flournoy, Ethaniel is great.
‘Trevelian’ odes sound a bit cold. I’m guessing he’s more of a realist than an optimist and takes things rather seriously. Which means he ought to have a joker for a side kick. But enough of that. And place don’t name a character ‘Galbatorix’ It’d dreadful to pronounce.
@Dragon-snapper I agree with you on the…[Read more]

@Sarah-H, people have been trying hard for a while to bring Holloween in over here. I don’t think it’s much of a thing yet, but I certainly don’t like shopping so much in the couple of weeks before.
We don’t have any really big holidays apart from Christmas and Easter, but there are a couple. Australia Day id the anniversary of the First Fleet…[Read more] -

I like Caramin and Viliden.
Caramin makes me think of the colour carmine. Or rather the word. I’m not actually sure what colour it is.
And I just have a love for name beginning with ‘V’. I don’t know why, but I’ve got several in my own writing.

I’ve been thinking quite a bit lately about how name can sometimes tell you a lot about characters. Also how preconceptions about names can affect perception of characters.
I’d love to have a discussion about it. What about a name indicates ‘villain’ to you? And the same with heroes.
Also I’m doing a little experiment on my blog asking people to…[Read more] -

@Sarah-h I don’t think I’ll be reading much this coming week. I’m going to attempt going at NaNoWriMo pace with my writing, for one week, to see if I can handle it. But I’m rewriting, so it’s rather different and probably not a very good indicator.

Since I only started a couple of days ago I haven’t done much reading at all. There’s been a couple of times I’ve thought of something I wanted to look at in a novel, but I just remind myself and don’t do it. I’ll have to leave analyzing other peoples characters till next month, that’s all.

@ClaireC I’d read it. @emma-flournoy The Japanese did bomb Darwin.
It doesn’t sound like alternative history to me though. Alternative history is “a genre of fiction in which the author speculates on how the course of history might have been altered if a particular historical event had had a different outcome.”
So if your premise included a…[Read more]

@Daeus I have two suggestions, both series,though so they could be a bit long. The Ilyon Chronicles my Jaye L Knight are other world, non-magical fantasy with a very strong faith theme. A little violent at times and they’re directed at late teens up. The first book is Resistance.
Another series of the Blades of Aktar by Tricia Mingerink. She takes…[Read more] -

Since I’m not doing it this month, do the Hobbit.

I don’t do things like this half heartedly. After mentioning on my blog and telling my parents it’d feel like cheating to me. The only exception I might make for myself is reading my little brothers WIP. It can be amusing on occasion, but I don’t read it for fun. And it’s long overdue.
Don’t feel that I think you’re cheating. I’m not setting…[Read more]

@Bluejay, I’m not going to read one this month then, so don’t count my votes.
Unless we read something from the Bible. Esther or Ruth could be good.

This for October right? Because we’re not reading fiction in September.
1. The Witch of Blackbird Pond
2. Black BeautyBut I’d join in with most. Maybe even the Hobbit, though I don’t read Tolkien. And please no one comment on that. There’s a multitude of reasons, some of which might still prevent me from reading it. I’m not going to explain.

Well, I call my self a country girl, but I’m not by any means a farm girl. I’m probably spoilt. I’d hate living in a city or even a town, but I’m nana animal person, and our house is very comfortable. But I can build, so that’s one thing.
We live 25 or so minutes from the edge of a city,so There’s all those conveniences.

@hope You’re on the Camp NaNoWriMo website, not nanowrimo.com You use the same username and password, but you actually need to log in there for it to create that half of your account. No wonder I couldn’t find you, you’re not actually there.

I like it. But I do agree with @Sarah-h. Polite, doesn’t quite seem to fit with gentleness. Maybe placid or quiet.
I looked up about forms of poetry and it’s rather similar to a cinquain, but that has the fourth line longest.

I think the shortened version is probably just short enough. Have you ever tried writing a log-line or elevator pitch for it? What the book is about in one or two sentences?
Also I remember you had been thiunking of looking for a publisher. Is that still your intention or are you doing it yourself? A publisher would probably re-write the blurb to…[Read more]
