Chapter 41
Wanda rushed into the kitchen at the sound of Maria’s scream. She reached the kitchen even before her twin, who usually beat her there.
She stared, wide-eyed, at the man in the kitchen.
He was pink…and green…and didn’t look normal.
“Auntie Maria, Auntie Maria, what-!?” Pietro skidded to a stop, almost colliding into the wall, staring at the man. “Woah! Who are you!?”
Footsteps sounded. “Oh, hello! I’m Becca!” Becca almost walked forward, to greet the man, but Bucky quickly grabbed her arm, stopping her.
Maria grabbed a pan. “What are you? What are you doing here? Who are you!?”
“Do not be alarmed. I am Vision. I am here only to help.”
“Where did you come from!?” Maria asked, holding the pan tighter.
She was going to hit the man with it.
A bunch of the others entered the kitchen, all staring at the man.
Phil, Tony, and Steve, who rushed from downstairs, stopped just a couple feet shy of the kitchen.
“So that’s where he went…” Tony mused.
Wanda looked back at the strange man named Vision. He smiled at Maria…he didn’t at all seem threatening.
She closed her eyes…willed to look inside of him.
And she did.
She slowly and carefully went over to Vision.
“Wanda, wait-!”
“Maria…he’s friendly,” Wanda whispered, and gently, she grabbed Vision’s hands, held them in her own, and looked up into his eyes, her own eyes glowing a light red, “he just wants to help us anyway he can. He wants to protect us. He wants to love all of us.”
She slowly let go of his hands and smiled softly up at him, the red fading from her eyes, for once not feeling shy at all. “I’m Wanda. I’m eleven.”
Vision smiled softly, sweetly. “I am Vision. It is a pleasure to meet you, Wanda.”
She smiled, grabbed his hand, and squeezed it before facing the others. She smiled warmly, softly. “Vision is a new family member.”
Nick blinked a few times. “Where did…? How…? When…? Why? Where did he come from?”
Everyone looked around, as if trying to find a portal or something.
Pietro shrugged. “Maybe he came from the sky!?”
Peter nodded. “Or maybe he came from Candyland!”
Becca clapped her hands. “Ooh, yay, Candyland!”
Wanda giggled and shook her head. “I don’t think he’s from Candyland…”
A quiet sigh sounded, and Tony slowly rose his hand. “…I made him.”
Wanda squeezed Vision’s hand tighter. Vision was friendly and he didn’t want to hurt anyone.
But she was afraid that Tony was going to get in a lot of trouble.
~*~
“You made Vision in secret, Tony…and you both tried to hide him from us.” Phil said softly, looking at both Steve and Tony, who sat across from him, Nick, and Maria in the dining room.
They needed to talk, and thankfully, Thor and Loki had gotten the other kids and even Vision distracted with a movie.
Steve’s gaze fell, shame and fear filling his features.
“I was trying to make an iron suit thing…kinda similar to the wings I made for Sam awhile back, but also…not. It was going to be something I could use to protect everyone if you three weren’t around…it just…didn’t turn out quite how I imagined.”
“We’re sorry.” Steve said quietly, softly.
“Steve, Tony…” Maria grabbed one of each of their hands; squeezed them, “why didn’t you just tell us about Vision?”
Tony and Steve shared a quick look. Tony let out a quiet sigh. “We thought you’d be mad.”
Nick slowly shook his head. “Maybe a little, yes, but we would have mostly just been curious, and would have found ways to help with Vision and make sure he’s safe. Now that you hid him from us…”
“It’s broken some of our trust in you.” Phil finished with a small, sad smile.
Neither Tony nor Steve looked up, unable to meet any of their gazes’.
“And we would have been a lot less disappointed and mad if you had just told us about Vision.” Maria said softly, gently squeezing their hands again.
Tony slowly looked up at her. “I guess we thought you’d hurt us.”
Phil smiled sadly. “Tony, Steve,…you both know we’d never do that, don’t you?”
Steve shrugged. “How can we know when it’s the only life we’ve known for so long? There was nothing Pierce couldn’t “fix” with harsh punishment.”
Nick raised an eyebrow. “Have you never had a parent be kind to either of you before us?”
“My parents were good, really good, I mean…but we were still often distant from each other, y’know? Dad worked a lot, Mom worked a lot…and I had a butler around most of the time instead of my parents. They loved me though, I knew they did…I guess under Pierce though, I don’t know,” Tony shrugged, “I guess I just learned to expect the worst.”
Steve nodded. “My dad died when I was a baby…I don’t even remember him. My mom died when I was only six…and she worked a lot so she could take care of me, so I didn’t see her a lot.”
“You were six…but I thought you said you were at Pierce’s since you were eight, not six.” Maria said softly, dark eyebrows furrowing together.
“Yeah…I was at Pierce’s since I was eight until Nick adopted me. After my mom died, I had to find somewhere to live…something to eat. I saw a poster that promised food and shelter, and I was only a naïve six-year-old…so I took it, went where it said to go, and signed myself up. It was a government program trying to test a serum that would make a good soldier,” Steve sniffed and wiped away a few stray tears, “and I was given food and shelter as I was promised…but no one was kind, I was expected to follow every rule they had or else face military-level discipline of some kind, and when they were ready, they experimented on me and gave me the serum that made me like…this.” Steve finished, motioning to his muscular build.
Phil wiped a few tears away. The fact that Steve, just a child, had gone through so much trauma and pain…it was unfathomable.
“And then they sent Steve to Pierce when he was eight, had the serum, and they no longer needed him. And you’ve heard stories of what Pierce’s was like, and the fact that all the foster homes were no better.” Tony added quietly, brushing back another strand of his awry black hair. “So yeah, maybe we have trust issues. We’ve had good reasons to put up walls and not let people close. We’re sorry about hiding Vision though, we really are.”
Phil smiled softly. “We know you are. It’s okay, we all mess up.”
Nick nodded in agreement. “Exactly. We all make mistakes, what’s important is that we learn from them, so we don’t make those same mistakes again. But actions do have consequences, Tony, Steve.”
Steve and Tony both watched him, likely both waiting for, anticipating, the worst.
Nick, Phil, and Maria shared a glance.
Nick turned to face Tony and Steve. “You’ll both be grounded for 1 week. Does that sound fair?”
Steve bit his lip. “It doesn’t seem bad enough.”
Tony nodded in agreement. “Yeah. Most people would do much worse.”
Phil stood and went around to the other side of the table, gently grasping and squeezing Steve and Tony’s shoulders. They both looked up at him, and Phil smiled. “Well…maybe we’re not like most people.”
Chapter 42
“I do not quite understand what this movie is about, but I do enjoy it. Is this something you do for fun?” Vision whispered, seated on the couch.
Wanda nodded. “One thing, uh huh. But we do all sorts of things for fun.”
Clint smiled at Wanda.
She had been talking more to Vision than Clint had ever heard her talk in his life. She seemed the exact opposite of shy when she talked to Vision.
He loved it.
He leaned back against the couch where he was sitting on the floor, eyes going back to The Lion King, the movie Peter and Pietro both wanted to watch and everyone else agreed to.
Truth be told, even though he was older than say Peter or Pietro, it was still a good and fun movie.
Becca giggled. “I think the monkey is my favorite.”
Clint turned around and smiled at her, looking up at the couch. Becca smiled brightly, two teeth missing. “Who’s your favorite, Clint?”
Clint chuckled. “I think Rafiki might be my favorite too, honestly. What about you, Bucky?” He asked, turning his attention to Bucky, who was sitting behind Becca, braiding his little sister’s hair.
Bucky faced Clint with a small smile. “Well, it was Mufasa, but…probably second favorite would be Zazu.”
Clint chuckled. “Yeah, he’s a good one.”
“I don’t like Scar. He’s mean.” Peter said with a scrunched-up nose.
Loki chuckled and tousled Peter’s already messy brown hair. “That’s the point, silly. He’s the villain. You’re supposed to not like him.”
Peter giggled.
Clint laughed.
This was great.
Every day…he was thankful for this family he now had.
Truth was, he’d…never had a good family.
Clint slowly clenched and unclenched his fists.
He had never had a family that would sit and watch a movie.
He had never had a family that would play games.
He had never had a family that all sat down together at dinnertime.
He had never had a family that…loved each other.
His parents’ voices rose higher and higher, his father’s always rising above his mother’s.
Clint sat on the last step of the stairs, brown eyes open and alert, completely fixed on the kitchen where his parents argued.
He hated it when they argued.
He pushed his hands up against his ears, blotting out their harsh words.
He heard his mother scream and glass shatter, but he didn’t move…because he knew he could do nothing.
His parents had died less than a week after that when they crashed the car into a tree.
His father had been driving drunk…and killed them both.
Clint ran away after that, only seven years old, and after weeks of nowhere to stay and no food, he found Ryton’s circus. He was trained with a bow and arrow; was the star of the show, even.
He was fed, even if barely, clothed, and he was given a place to stay.
But Ryton was even worse than Clint’s alcoholic, abusive father had been.
Clint may have been the star of the show, but to Ryton, he was still practically useless. He was expected to follow the rules…same as he had been at home, and later, at Pierce’s.
Ryton hated disobedience.
Clint stepped out of line; he was treated as the animals were. He was whipped.
A shudder ran up and down his spine.
He’d been in the circus for two years before he ran away, aged only nine. He was alone on the streets for a few months before a woman found him and got him to Pierce’s orphanage, where he met Steve, Bucky, and later Natasha…and finally, later, the others.
Pierce’s was bad…but Clint had friends there.
And it was nothing compared to the circus.
He heard footsteps and turned, just as Nick, Phil, Maria, Steve, and Tony entered the living room.
Peter jumped off the couch where he was sitting with Loki and ran to Tony. “TONY!”
Tony smiled and lifted Peter into his arms. “Hey there, Peter. What are you up to…oh, I see, you’re watching The Lion King. Did you pick it, you weirdo?”
Peter giggled. “You’re silly, Tony!”
Tony smirked and laughed. He kissed Peter’s forehead and settled down on the couch beside Thor.
Clint raised an eyebrow at Steve.
Steve shrugged and mouthed, “I’ll tell you later.”
Clint nodded, turning back around to focus his attention on the movie.
A knock sounded.
“Who would be coming over at this hour?” Maria asked softly, already heading for the door.
Nick sighed in annoyance. “It better not be Pierce.”
The door quietly opened. “Hello? May I help you?”
“Is this the Fury residence?”
The voice, masculine, accented, sophisticated.
Ryton.
His breath heaved. His heartbeat increased.
He couldn’t catch his breath.
He couldn’t breathe!!
“Clint…?” Bruce whispered, noticing his panic.
Natasha jumped off the couch and crouched in front of him. “Clint, Clint,” she snapped her fingers, “hey, stay with me.”
Images floated before his eyes…memories…but he kept himself focused on Natasha.
Watch Nat. Only watch Nat. Only think about Nat.
His breath slowly evened out…and he didn’t hear Ryton’s voice anymore.
Nick crossed his arms. “What was that about?”
“He said someone ran from his circus about six years ago and heard that they lived here…he tried to burst inside.” Maria replied quietly.
Phil raised a small grin. “Don’t worry Nick, I told him to get lost. He won’t be coming back.”
Thor paused the movie, and Nick looked around the room. “Who here was in the circus?”
Clint slowly rose his hand.
He’d have to admit it one day.
“Was it…good there? Why were you at a circus?” Phil asked softly, eyebrows furrowing together in concern.
“My parents died…I needed food and shelter, but the circus…the circus…”
“It was horrible.” Natasha finished for him, gently rubbing Clint’s back, smiling softly. “Really bad.”
Clint nodded. “…Yeah.”
Maria crouched down in front of him. “Oh Clint…we didn’t know.”
Clint shrugged. “I-I didn’t tell you. I didn’t want anyone to know.”
“What happened, Clint? What was Ryton like?”
His throat clammed up and he couldn’t speak.
“He was horrible, very horrible,” Natasha squeezed Clint’s hand, “and he punished Clint when he got out of line…whipped him even…I know this because Clint has told me.”
Maria’s eyes filled with tears. “Oh, Clint…”
She opened her arms, and Clint fell into them, sobbing.
But for once in his life…he felt something.
He felt like he belonged.
For once in his life, Clint felt…loved.
Chapter 43
“We’re gonna have a bit of track practice today, so I need all of you lazybones up and ready to run and race.”
Sam stood along with everyone else, focused on their high school PE teacher, Logan. Although he had heard some of the other teachers nickname him as Wolverine.
Sam kinda saw why…he had one freaky hairdo.
Sam felt a nudge from the side. “Bet I can beat you in a race.” The boy winked.
Sam scowled at the seventeen-year-old. Scott Lang thought he was better than Sam at almost everything.
They’d already gotten into a small fight, thankfully none of the teachers knew…although Tony did.
He had seen it, after all, and had even offered to jump in so they could team against Scott, but Sam had declined.
Sadly, Scott won.
Clint nudged Scott in the side. “Hey, maybe Sam will surprise you. I’m sure he’ll actually kick your butt.” He gave Sam a wink.
Sam laughed.
Scott shrugged. “I guess we’ll see.”
“So we shall.” Sam replied.
He intended to beat everyone in this race.
Logan looked at his clipboard. “Alright, rules are this: stay in your lane, and don’t hurt any other players…I’m looking at you, Pierce.”
Alec rolled his eyes.
Sam chuckled quietly. At least one of the teachers wasn’t ignorant of Alec’s bullying and rule breaking.
Logan set down the clipboard on the grass. “Alright everyone, into your lanes!”
Everyone walked over to the track field, and Logan gave everyone a lane to stay in.
Sam got in position, someone on his right, someone on his left, but he didn’t pay attention to who they were.
This would be so much fun, beating Scott, and maybe…even everyone.
“Ready…set…GO!!!” Logan blew his whistle, and Sam took off.
He loved running.
It made him feel like he was flying, some days.
It was also a great distraction.
Sam pushed and pumped. He looked behind him, laughed, and turned back around. Scott was way behind.
Sam was winning this race.
He kept running, determined to win…determined to best everyone.
Not because he thought he was the best…he just really wanted to win, especially against Scott Lang.
He heard rushed, pounding footsteps behind him…coming from one of his sides, from the other lane.
“What…?” He whispered beneath his breath, just as someone came up right beside him. Sam looked over. “Steve!?”
Steve grinned, gaining on Sam. He ran past him, flying, he was running so fast. “On your left.”
“Hey!” Sam called after him, laughing, pushing his legs even more.
They all kept running, running a few laps. Sam never caught back up to Steve.
He finished the final lap, just behind Steve.
Logan began handing all of the students a water bottle.
Sam took an offered water bottle. “Thanks.”
Logan turned to Steve with a small grin. “Can’t believe you’re not on the track team.”
Steve took a long sip of water. “Me and Bucky are already on the football team. Maybe I’ll do track next year.”
Logan nodded. “I think they’d love to have you.” He turned around to go talk to a couple struggling students who were barely able to catch their breath.
Steve looked at Sam and laughed. “You seemed so shocked when I ran past you.”
Sam took a sip of water. “You took me by surprise.”
“Steve, you beat the guy, leave him alone!” Bucky playfully scolded, nudging Steve in the side, the two of them sitting side by side on the grass.
Clint laughed, walking over, followed by Tony, Loki, and Bruce, who were all gurgling down water. “Man, Steve…you run even faster than I first thought.”
“Have you never watched him on the football field? He’s faster than anyone else,” Bruce cried, pushing up his glasses, “and he can run twice as long!”
Steve shrugged. “I’m not that fast.”
Sam shook his head. “Liar.”
He heard footsteps and he turned.
Scott walked over, flicking back a lock of hair off of his sweaty forehead, drinking from a bottle of water. “Man, Sam…you ran fast. Not as fast as Steve, but dang. That was a good race. Guess you’re not so bad.”
Scott held up a fist.
Sam grinned and fist bumped him. “You’re not so bad yourself, Scott.”
