Chapter 36

The trip back home was almost deathly silent.

Nick, Phil, nor Maria had said anything about Peter hiding from everyone, and almost no one was talking, except for a few of them, but it was only in hushed whispers.

And it was terrifying.

Steve checked the time on his phone. 9:30 AM. He leaned back in his seat.

“…They haven’t said anything.”

Steve nodded, throat dry, turning to face Tony, who sat beside him in the van, with Sam on Tony’s other side, but Sam had earbuds in his ears, listening to something on his phone. “That’s the scary part.”

Tony slowly nodded.

Because as much as he tried to hide it, Tony had been hurt too. Pierce had given him bruises and scars too. Same as he’d done to all of them.

A shudder ran up and down Steve’s spine.

Maybe he was supposed to trust everyone by now…but still, he didn’t.

Weren’t they mad at Peter? Being mad…it often led to punishment. Painful punishment.

And the silence…they must have been thinking about how to do it….what to do to punish Peter for hiding and scaring everyone.

“I won’t let anyone hurt him,” Tony promised, vowed, fists clenching and unclenching in his lap, “and I’ll keep him safe.”

“…Do we still have to keep everyone safe? I thought we were done with that.” Bucky said quietly from the seat behind them, seemingly having heard their conversation.

Sam removed his earbuds. “What are you guys talking about?”

“Nothing.” Steve murmured.

“Uncle Phil, are we going home now!?” Pietro cried from one of the front seats, sitting in between Wanda and Peter.

“Yes, Pietro…we’re going home.” Phil replied, but there was exasperation in his tone.

His patience was wearing thin…if not already gone. And that didn’t mean anything good.

Steve took in and let out deep breaths. Tony squeezed his shoulder.

Sam put his earbuds back into his ears.

Bucky leaned forward in his seat so he could whisper to Tony and Steve. “You don’t think they’ll hurt Peter, do you?”

“They haven’t hurt anyone yet,” Tony bit his lip, “but that doesn’t mean they won’t. Peter did something really dangerous.”

“He doesn’t know any better yet.” Bucky pointed out.

Steve let out a deep breath. “Did that ever stop Pierce?”

Bucky bit his lip and sighed. “No…”

“So it probably won’t stop them either.” Steve whispered softly. “And we might need to keep Peter safe.”

“They haven’t done anything yet though.”

“That doesn’t mean they won’t, Bucky.” Tony replied. Crossed his arms. “And I won’t let anyone else ever hurt Peter again.”

“What are all of you talking about?” Loki asked, turning around in his seat, raising an eyebrow, brushing a strand of his shoulder-length black hair behind his ear.

Steve looked at Tony. Bit his lip.

Tony turned to Loki, raising an eyebrow. “Is it really any of your business? Do you have to know what we’re talking about all the time?”

“That was a little rude.” Bucky muttered, reaching over the seat to nudge Tony.

Tony sighed. “Sorry, Loki. We’re just…uhm…talking about my new invention idea. Isn’t that right, Steve?”

Steve nodded, giving Loki a smile. “Yeah, just talking about Tony’s new blueprints.”

Tony handed him his phone, and Steve looked at the blueprints.

Loki shrugged. “If you say so.” He turned back around and sat in his seat normally.

Steve handed Tony back his phone, dropping his voice to an almost silent whisper. “That was close.”

Tony nodded. “It was.”

 

Chapter 37

Tony, Bucky, and Steve had truly been worried for no reason.

Also, they hadn’t been as quiet as they thought.

Because Natasha had heard them.

Yes, Peter had gotten in trouble…but Nick, Phil, Maria…they handled things…differently.

He’d been corrected, but in a loving way. They’d explained to him why what he had done was wrong, rather than just getting angry and punishing him.

Truth be told, it had taken her by surprise.

Natasha wandered down the hall of the middle school, avoiding everyone as much as possible.

“Well done, Natalia. You did much better than last time. But you must do better if you wish to graduate.”

Now she wished she hadn’t fought so hard to graduate.

Natasha shook her head, tossing aside the painful, unwanted memories. Someone ran into her shoulder.

The history books in Natasha’s hands went cascading to the floor. “Hey, what was that for!?”

The red-haired girl smirked and laughed. “Come on, Freak, what are you going to do about it?”

Natasha bent to grab her books. “Leave me alone, Alice.”

Alice Pierce was the worse bully in the school, and she’d made it her mission to torment Natasha.

And she was the younger sister of Alec Pierce.

Those two were just as bad as their father.

Natasha picked back up her books and glared at Alice. “Could you leave me alone, already!?”

“What are you going to do, Natasha, fight me? Your brother already beat up my older brother.”

“Which brother?” Natasha countered, rolling her eyes.

Although she knew which one.

He’d gotten detention for it, after all.

“Steve. The most annoying one.”

“Your brother is way more annoying than any of mine, so you need to shut up.”

Alice laughed, flipping her hair behind her shoulder. She grinned. “I think you forget one thing, Natasha…I run this school. I can get you in trouble and get you kicked out faster than you can say potato.”

“That’s the most creative thing you could come up with?” Natasha asked, rolling her eyes again.

Alice just smirked.

A leg swept against Natasha’s shin. She cried out and hit the floor, her books landing on the floor again.

Alice laughed, as a group of both boys and girls surrounded Natasha, all laughing or smirking.

Alice stepped up close. “Get out of here, Natasha. You don’t belong here, understand? You belong back at the orphanage, not around us. All of you belong back at the orphanage, understand?”

She never belonged anywhere.

Natasha fought back tears.

She leapt to her feet, swept her heeled boots against Alice’s leg, sending the girl sprawling to the floor.

She pushed her way through a few bullies and took off down the hall, tears stinging her eyes.

Maybe she really didn’t belong anywhere.

Maybe she didn’t belong around everyone else.

Maybe she really was just a mistake.

His phone dinged.

Clint pulled his phone out of his pocket as the teacher, Beast, droned on and on about science.

Science was such a boring class.

He checked his new text message.

Natasha: ‘Hey Clint, don’t be afraid if you hear something about me on the news. I guess I realized where I truly belong…I’ve always treasured our friendship, and I’m proud to call you both my friend and my brother.’

Clint raised his hand. He saw Steve do the same. “Can I have a hall pass?” They both asked.

Beast nodded, giving them both a small smile. All of the teachers were kind. “Of course. Just hurry back as soon as you can.”

Clint, collected and calm, made his way out of the classroom. Steve was right behind him.

But when they walked away from the door…the two of them took off.

“We have to find Natasha.”

“She sent you a text too?” Steve asked, running beside Clint.

Clint nodded. “Yeah. I wonder if she texted the-“

He stopped.

Because the others were all around…except for Bruce and Loki.

There was Tony, Sam, Bucky, all standing in the hallway.

Sam raised an eyebrow. “Natasha text you too?”

Clint nodded. “Sure did. Where’s Bruce and Loki?”

Tony shook his head. “Don’t think Loki got a text. And Bruce…? I don’t know.”

“It’s already on the news.” Bucky noted.

Clint raised an eyebrow. “Yeah? What are they saying?”

“That Natasha disappeared from school today…and that she’s gone missing, and that they’re asking anyone and everyone in the area to start trying to help look for her.”

“I know where she went.”

They all faced Clint.

“Where?” Sam asked.

Clint walked over to the front doors of the school. “Come on. All of us are gonna have to search the forest.”

 

Chapter 38

“Found you.”

She gasped, instantly turning around, ready to fight…but it was only Bucky.

Natasha turned back around.

No one could leave her alone.

No one would just let her stay here.

She didn’t deserve their love.

She couldn’t be loved.

“You are just our weapon, Natalia…nothing more,” The teacher twisted a lock of her red hair, “and no one will ever love you.”

“I shouldn’t have sent everyone text messages.”

“It’s how we figured out you’d left.” Bucky settled on the branch beside her. “Besides, if you didn’t want someone to come looking for you, then you wouldn’t have sent out those texts in the first place.”

“Leave me alone.” Natasha retorted, wrapping her arms around herself, building up another wall…another way to keep her safe.

“Hey,” Bucky nudged her shoulder, “you know you don’t have to be alone now. We’re siblings now. You wanna talk to me?”

She turned to him, tears brimming in her green eyes. “Bucky, please, just…leave me alone.”

“Nat, come on…you can talk to me.” Bucky whispered, laying a hand on her shoulder.

She pulled away. “You don’t understand, Bucky! I don’t belong at the house…okay!? I didn’t even belong at the orphanage. I don’t deserve anything except anger. They made me a weapon, and that’s all I am, alright!?”

“I guess I’m just a weapon too…or did you forget that Pierce made me a weapon too?”

“I went through years of training, Bucky.”

“And I lost an arm because of being Pierce’s weapon…so I don’t deserve the house either.”

Natasha brought her knees up to her chest.

She wouldn’t let him close.

Letting people close meant you were at risk of losing them.

Letting people close meant they’d find out about your past.

Letting people close meant that they would one day leave.

Letting people close meant that she would finally…not be alone.

“Natasha, we’re siblings now, and-“

“What are you doing up in a tree!? Everyone will be so glad you’re found, but I need you both to get down.”

Natasha looked down to look at a police officer, who had Clint and the others with him as well.

Clint gave her a reassuring smile.

Natasha turned to Bucky.

She had to go.

“Thanks Bucky, but it’s still the same. I don’t belong anywhere.”

She slid down the length of the tree.

Bucky clambered down after her.

Clint ran to her, giving her a huge hug.

She hugged him back gently, offering her friend, her brother, a smile she didn’t feel at all. “Hi Clint.”

“Hey Nat…you good?”

She nodded. “Just perfect.”

She’d convince him.

She’d convince all of them.

They would see her happy.

They wouldn’t know that she was falling apart inside.

The officer led them out of the forest, occasionally mumbling something about “crazy kids”.

There was no telling how much fear they’d put everyone through.

They stepped out of the forest, and Sam shielded his eyes from the bright sun. He truthfully hadn’t realized how dark the forest had actually been.

The officer waved. “I found them!”

Sam looked up.

There was a huge crowd of people.

Thor was the first one running, heading straight for all of them. “What happened!? Why did you-!?”

“I ran off. It’s my fault.” Natasha said, lowering her head.

Sam was surprised to see tears in her eyes.

Since when did Natasha cry!?

Nick, Phil, Maria, Loki, and Bruce were all right behind Thor, rushing, racing to get to them.

Bruce quickly hugged Tony, Loki embraced Clint, Maria checked Natasha for injuries, and Phil grabbed and hugged both Sam and Bucky.

Sam hugged him back.

A hug felt…nice. He hadn’t had one in years…ever since Riley died…and then his mom…then his dad.

He’d lost everyone in only a years’ time.

Greif and pain squeezed his chest, but he forced them back. He didn’t have time for pain.

Maria gave Natasha a quick hug before pulling away. “Natasha, what happened? Why did you run away?”

Natasha shrugged. “I-I don’t know.”

Nick hugged Steve and then grasped Steve’s shoulders. “Why did none of you message us? You could have gotten hurt.”

“We…we just…” Steve trailed off.

“We wanted to make sure Nat was safe,” Clint finished, “and I guess we just didn’t think about messaging you.”

“Bruce did. That’s how everyone found out so quickly.” Maria replied softly, hugging Natasha yet again.

Sam gently pulled away from Phil’s hug. “We’re sorry. We didn’t mean to scare anyone.”

Nick looked around, and gently hugged Steve again. “None of you ever do that again.”

But he spoke with less anger than Sam had expected.

How were they not mad?

Maybe they were…but not as mad as Sam had anticipated.

“Xavier and the principal of the middle school said all of you could miss the rest of the school day,” Phil pulled away from his hug with Bucky; he smiled faintly, “so we’re all going home.”

Thor chuckled, rubbing the back of his neck. “Though I should probably get back to work. I’ll take the car so you can have the van. Will you want me to pick up Wanda, Pietro, and Peter later?”

Nick shook his head, as they all began walking away from the crowd that was slowly dispersing. “I’ll pick them up when I take Steve to therapy. For now, let’s all go home. We can talk more about this there.”

Also, I can’t wait for Vision I think it would be so sweet if Wanda opened up to him because currently, she’s really shy. I could also see Tony and Steve getting into arguments about him.

Ok so I’ve been thinking about Vision (I really like him XD) And I had an idea

What if Steve doesn’t like Vision for two reasons

1. he’s nervous that Tony’s robot will get them kicked out or abused by Maria, Nick, and Phil

2. He and Wanda seem really close (Just by the few scenes I’ve read) And a part of him is a little jealous of how much Wanda trusts Vision

Just some ideas and I’m literally hooked on Wanda and Vision being best friends it would be the sweetest thing ever!!!!
