      @freedomwriter76

A little gasp is heard from a shadowy corner. On further inspection, a cloaked figure can be seen.

      You caught me!

      So…

Yes, I’m enjoying reading this. My knowledge of Marvel has extended to people’s names. XD

I love the way you’re building the kids as each one slowly opens up. It’s really fun to read!

      *Slips back into shadowy obscurity*

You have listened to fears, child. Come, let me breathe on you... Are you brave again? -Aslan

. They all need a big group snuggle. 🥰 I’m thinking I might actually write them in the living room for the next chapter, but we’ll see. 😉

        Aww, thank you!

This is all really an experiment in developing characters and giving clues as time goes on, lol. XD I like the way it’s going though, and I’m glad y’all love it too! 💖 I’m glad it’s fun to read! 🙂 😀

@freedomwriter76 YES!! I hope Sorren beats him up! (The only time I will feel proud of my villain is when he defeats another villain who abuses little kids)

Yay! Happiness ahead! Yeah I need it…

                    Chapter 25

She pulled the blanket up to her chin.

With everyone in the living room along with pillows and blankets, it was actually warm.

                    Clint tapped her shoulder. “Nat…”

She turned to face him. “Yeah?”

“Nat is wearing a hat on top of a mat. And she thought her best friend was very much like a cat.”

Natasha laughed. “What in the world are you doing?”

“She was very mad and had called a cab.”

“Clint…what are you doing?” Bucky asked, turning to face them both.

Clint turned to face him. “Just trying to make Nat laugh.”

Natasha laughed again. “Well then…mission successful.”

Wow, Clint could be a freak.

Clint chuckled again. He nudged Bucky. “Hey, repeat this to Steve.”

“Are we playing telephone now?” Natasha asked, as Clint whispered something into Bucky’s ear.

                    Yep, they were playing telephone.

Natasha smiled. Now she was curious to see how it ended.

Telephone didn’t ever end how it started.

                    “Clint…what did you say?”

“The elephant was eating peanuts at the circus.”

Natasha smirked. “Can’t wait to see how that ends.”

                    “Me too.” Clint replied.

                    Natasha laughed.

Eventually, the saying finally got around to all the kids, finally ending with Pietro.

“The giant was meeting peanuts at the ruckus.”

                    A short moment of silence.

                    Then laughter.

                    Natasha couldn’t stop laughing.

Clint laughed beside her. “No…it was the elephant was eating peanuts at the circus.”

                    The others only laughed harder.

                    “Another one!” Pietro cried, laughing.

Natasha glanced at Nick, Phil, and Maria. It was a school night.

Nick smiled. Leaned over and whispered something into Peter’s ear.

                    Peter was finally smiling.

Peter turned to Tony, and another round began.

                    Natasha smiled.

                    Glanced at Clint.

                    Squeezed his hand.

“There’s nothing better than this.” Clint whispered.

                    Natasha nodded.

                    “Yep. Nothing better.”

                    Chapter 26

                    Maria cracked open four eggs.

The cookies would be ready before bedtime.

                    “Hi Maria!”

“Hello Peter.” She replied, turning around with a smile.

Peter grinned. “What are you doing?”

“Making chocolate chip cookies.” Maria replied. Began mixing the wet ingredients.

                    “Really!? Yummy!”

“Yes, very yummy.” Maria replied with a chuckle.

He was so adorable…sweet…innocent. How could anyone ever hurt him?

Or any of them, for that matter?

“I’m gonna go play outside!” Peter cried.

“Okay, have…wait, is anyone else outside?”

                    “Yeah! The others!”

“Then have fun.” Maria called after him.

                    But Peter was already gone.

She shook her head. They were crazy, that was for certain.

But she loved them with everything she had.

Before long, she finished the cookies and put them in the oven.

She washed her hands. Wiped them dry on her apron.

She walked over to the back door and stepped outside into the cool September air.

                    Almost two months now.

                    Time flew.

All of the kids were in the backyard, playing football.

The older ones pretended they couldn’t run from nor catch the younger, and laughter filled the air.

Maria smiled. Glanced at Nick and Phil, who were watching the kids as well.

They turned to her, and both smiled.

Maria glanced at an outdoor table, which had a pitcher and cups on it. “Who wants apple cider?”

                    Hands shot up.

Maria laughed. “Okay then. Come on over then.”

Within a few moments, they were all sitting in the grass with cups, talking and laughing.

                    All of the kids…and a few…friends.

“Pepper, look what I found!” Peter cried, holding up an empty snail shell.

Pepper, from where she was sitting beside Tony in the grass, looked up and smiled. “Awesome Peter. Let me see.” She offered. Peter dropped into her lap, and she handed her cup of cider over to Tony.

Peter showed her the shell, and Pepper examined it with awe, making Peter…smile and laugh.

Maria smiled. Tony had made a good friend.

                    So had Steve.

Maria glanced over at where Peggy was sitting in between Steve and Bucky in the grass, making both boys laugh, something neither of them ever did enough.

                    She smiled.

                    Friends were good for them.

                    In many ways.

                    “Aunt Maria…?”

Maria smiled and turned her attention to Wanda. “What is it, Wanda?”

                    “…I don’t feel good.”

“You probably got hot from playing football.” Nick replied with a small smile.

Wanda shook her head. “My stomach hurts.” She set her cider down.

                    Maria pursed her lips.

Viruses were going around, what with school having just started back a few weeks ago.

Plus, they were getting into flu season.

“Does anything else hurt?” Maria asked softly, setting her own cider down.

                    “My head…” Wanda whispered.

And, Maria noticed, her eyes were a little glassy. She moved closer to Wanda. She bent down and kissed her forehead. Surprisingly, Wanda didn’t even try to pull away. Her head felt warm.

Maria took Wanda’s hand. “Come on. I think you may be running a fever. We’ll check your temperature.”

“Is she okay?” Phil asked from across the yard, where he was talking to Pietro and Bruce.

“Yes. I think she may be coming down with something though.” Maria replied.

Pietro ran over. “Are you okay, Wanda!?”

Wanda slowly shook her head. “My stomach and head hurt…”

“I’m taking her inside to check her temperature. You can stay outside. I’ll be back in just a few minutes.” Maria told him.

She squeezed Wanda’s hand and led her inside.

                    Chapter 27

                    Being sick wasn’t fun.

                    It never was.

                    And now Wanda was sick!

                    It wasn’t fair!

Wanda didn’t deserve to be sick!

Pietro drummed his fingers on the living room table. They’d finished their cider and gone inside after Pepper and Peggy left. Now they were “calming down” before bedtime.

So they could be ready for school tomorrow.

But Wanda was stuck in bed!

                    She HAD to get better!

Pietro always wanted his sister Wanda around! He loved her, after all!

Maybe…he could help her get better.

                    He had an idea!

Wanda had said her throat hurt too…and Pietro knew popsicles were good for that!

He needed to get one from the freezer!

He knew they had some…he’d seen them!

Now…he needed to get one…without anyone seeing him. Like he’d done to get food…the food at the orphanage always left him hungry…so he had to get more.

Now he’d get a popsicle for Wanda!

Pietro looked around. No one was paying attention.

He ran into the kitchen, opened the freezer, grabbed a popsicle, rushed out, and rushed up the stairs to his, Wanda, and Peter’s room.

“Wanda! I got a popsicle for you!”

Wanda smiled. “…A popsicle? I love popsicles…” She whispered, her voice raspy.

Pietro grinned and handed her the popsicle. “Just for you!”

Wanda slowly took it and unwrapped it. She put it in her mouth. “That’s yummy…who told you to get it for me?”

“No one!” Pietro replied. “I just thought you’d want one!”

Wanda immediately took the popsicle out of her mouth. “…You took it? Pietro…I thought you wouldn’t anymore!”

“Wouldn’t do what? I wanted to help you!”

“Steal, Pietro!” Wanda replied, her voice cracking.

                    Pietro raised an eyebrow.

He was always hungry…running made him tired if he was hungry…and he’d always stolen before.

                    What was Wanda’s problem now!?

                    “I’ve done it before!”

                    “But…but that was…”

“It’s for you, Wanda! I didn’t take something for myself this time!”

“And!? You…you’ll get in trouble!” Wanda cried, eyes wide.

                    Pietro scoffed.

He was never caught. “I never get caught! They never realized I’d taken food before!”

“If they find out, you’ll get in trouble!”

Pietro shook his head. “No, I won’t.”

He never had before! He was good at getting things fast!

Yeah…they realized it was missing, but they had never caught him!

                    “You might!” Wanda cried.

                    The bedroom door opened.

Pietro turned around with a grin.

Someone was coming to visit Wanda!

                    How nice!

Peter stopped in the doorway. “Where’d you get a popsicle Wanda!?”

“Out of the freezer, where else would it be?” Pietro asked.

                    Popsicles had to stay cold!

“Auntie Maria said none were left!” Peter replied, hugging his stuffed bear tight.

That couldn’t be true. Pietro had gotten one!

“I got one for Wanda! That means there are some!” Pietro replied.

Peter raised an eyebrow. Set his bear down on his bed. “Auntie Maria said there weren’t. And Auntie Maria said cookies will be done soon’s!”

                    “Ooh, yummy!” Pietro cried.

Peter grinned. “Yeah! I hope you gets better soon Wanda.”

                    “…Thank you.” Wanda whispered.

Peter skipped back out of the room.

                    “Pietro, you almost got caught!”

“But I didn’t! I never do!” Pietro replied.

“You might! You’ll get in trouble! They’ll punish you!”

Pietro shook his head. “No, they won’t. I’ve never gotten caught!”

                    The door opened again.

“Wanda, Pietro, what are you two doing up here? You two were being…a little loud.” Phil said, stepping into the room.

“Uncle Phil!” Pietro cried. Hugged him.

                    He loved Uncle Phil!

Phil hugged him back, then looked up at Wanda. “Wanda, how are you…where did you get that?”

Pietro glanced at Wanda. “The freezer, Uncle Phil! She got it from the freezer!”

“Maria said none were left. Unless that was the last one…”

                    Pietro shrugged. “I guess so!”

“But how did she get it without anyone noticing?”

                    Wanda’s eyes went wide.

                    She was scared.

Pietro looked up at Phil. “I don’t know, Uncle Phil!”

“Wanda, how did you get that?”

                    Wanda shrugged.

Phil turned his attention to Pietro. “Pietro…do you know how she got it?”

                    Pietro looked back at Wanda.

                    She was so…scared.

She was almost ALWAYS scared…ever since Mama and Daddy went to the place up above.

                    Pietro’s gaze fell.

                    Now he felt sick.

                    “I do, Uncle Phil…”

Phil raised an eyebrow. “You do?”

“…I stole it…for Wanda. So she could have a popsicle…cause a cookie wouldn’t feel good for her throat…”

                    A moment of silence ensued.

“Pietro…why would you do that? You could have just asked.”

Tears coursed down Pietro’s cheeks in big drops.

“I’m sorry Uncle Phil! I didn’t mean to make you mad! I wanted to help Wanda! I’m sorry Uncle Phil! I know you’re mad!”

“Pietro…Pietro…no.” Phil got down onto one knee in front of him, grabbed his hands, holding them still.

Pietro sniffed and met Phil’s eyes.

                    He’d stole.

                    He’d made Uncle Phil mad.

He was a very bad boy.

                    “I’m sorry!”

“Pietro…I know. I know you’re sorry…and kid, I’m not mad. A little disappointed, yes, but not mad. I’m not mad about the popsicle. It’s just a popsicle. But you know not to steal, right?”

                    Pietro nodded. “Yeah…but I…I had to…I was hungry…”

                    “At the orphanage?”

Pietro nodded as tears continued to course down his cheeks. He’d made Uncle Phil mad. “I didn’t mean to make you mad!”

“Pietro…I’m not. Pietro, it’s okay. I’m not mad. I promise.” Phil’s arms wrapped around him. “I’m not mad. It’s okay. It’s just a little mess up. It’s fine.”

                    “But I…I was bad!”

“You’re learning, Pietro. Adapting to a new home. It’s okay. We all make mistakes. And I promise, I’m not mad.”

Pietro wiped at his eyes. “Are…are you sure?”

Phil smiled. “I’m certain.” He wrapped his arms around Pietro.

Pietro leaned into his embrace. Wrapped his arms around Phil’s neck.

                    “I love you Pietro.”

“…I love you too, Uncle Phil.”

                    Chapter 28

“That was good parking, Bucky. Great job.” Nick praised.

                    Bucky grinned.

                    Tony clapped with Sam.

Sam had done an amazing job too. Not perfect, by any means.

                    Bucky was better.

But then again…he’d driven a motorcycle for Pierce and Rumlow back at the orphanage…even at thirteen.

                    It probably wasn’t much different.

At least for Bucky. Bucky walked over. Fist-bumped Sam.

“Tony…your turn.” Nick said, motioning towards him.

Tony’s heartbeat increased. “Isn’t it getting late?”

“The sun’s still up. Besides, you need hours for nighttime too.” Nick replied. He opened the driver door. “Come on.”

                    Tony slowly obeyed.

He got into the driver’s seat. Closed the door.

Nick got into the passenger seat. Buckled.

Tony did the same. Adjusted his seat and put his hands on the wheel.

“Now…you have to start the car first…so turn the key.”

Tony did as instructed. The car’s engine rumbled to life. At least he wasn’t driving the big van.

“Now…take the car out of park and put it in drive.”

Tony obeyed. And before long, they were going.

He drove around the small subdivision. No one was on the road.
“Great job. You’re a natural.” Nick praised.

                    Tony’s muscles didn’t loosen.

Maybe he was stiff…but he couldn’t stop being stiff.

After a while, Nick told him to go back to the house.

Tony began to do so, and was almost back into the drive, when a car drove by on the other side.

And Tony slammed on the brakes.

                    The brakes screeched.

But the truck was coming too fast.

                    “Tony…Tony…what is it?”

                    “Get me out!”

“Tony…the driveway is right there. You’re almost-“

                    “I don’t care!” Tony yelled.

                    His heartbeat was fast.

                    Too fast.

                    “Please! Just get me out!”

He stared at himself in the mirror.

At the new arc reactor in his chest.

                    They had gone…so fast.

And he hadn’t even been able to say ‘I love you’ one last time.

                    “Tony…what’s wrong?”

                    “Get me home! Please!”

                    “Tony, you’re in the driver’s seat. I can’t.”

                    Tony unbuckled.

                    Flung the driver door open.

Nick got out as well. “Tony! Wait!”

He ran back towards the house.

Tears coursed down his cheeks and his heartbeat continued to increase.

                    He ran onto the grass.

                    When his heartbeat slowed.

                    And even stopped.

Tony fell and hit the grass.

                    “TONY!”

                        Chapter 29

Steve shifted Peter’s weight to his other arm. Peter’s arms wrapped tighter around his neck.

He’d been crying almost non-stop since Tony had been rushed to the hospital.

Phil, Maria, and Nick had followed the ambulance in the car, leaving Loki in charge until Thor got home from work.

After he did, Thor had gotten them some dinner from a fast-food place he’d taken them to, and then up to the hospital, where they were now.

Steve glanced around the waiting room.

Bucky was sitting with Wanda and Pietro, playing rock, paper, scissors, keeping them both calm.

The others were…quiet, comforting each other in almost complete silence.

And, of course, Steve was comforting Peter.

                        He held Peter even closer.

Peter sniffed and wrapped his arms even tighter around Steve’s neck.

Loki rubbed Peter’s back. “He’s probably tired too…”

                        “I’m sure.” Steve replied.

Loki smiled faintly. “…Are you okay Steve?”

                        “Yeah. I’m fine.” Steve replied.

                        Bit his lip.

Everyone always said he was a horrible liar…but maybe Loki wouldn’t be able to tell like everyone else could.

Loki raised an eyebrow. “…You sure?”

“Yeah. Just…worried about Tony.” Steve replied quietly.

Loki slowly nodded. “…We all are. Especially Nick, Phil, and Maria.”

                        Steve slowly nodded.

He heard quiet breathing, and he noticed that Peter had fallen fast asleep.

                        “He’s asleep…” Loki whispered.

                        Steve nodded. “I noticed.”

“Hello there, Steve. Or should I say punchee magee?”

Loki wrapped an arm around Steve. “What do you want, Alec?”

                        Alec smirked.

His left arm was in a cast and sling, and his nose was even bandaged.

Steve’s punch had done all that?

Well…Alec had gone through a wall.

“I’m here with my parents and sister. We were seeing a friend’s mom that’s in the hospital right now. What are all of you doing here?”

“Tony is in the hospital…but it’s not like you’d care.” Steve muttered.

“Do you think I’m that horrible Steve? I do care, actually. And I hope he gets better soon.” Alec grinned.

Steve scoffed. “That’s the fakest lie I’ve ever heard.”

Alec gasped. “Now I’m hurt. Do you think I’m horrible or something?”

“Pretty close to it.” Steve snarled.

Alec didn’t care a whit about any of them. He’d made that very clear.

“Ah, I do not believe we have met!”

Steve looked up as an orange haired woman walked over, a girl about Natasha’s age or maybe a little younger, beside her.
“I’m Abigail, and this is my daughter and son Alice and Alec. You are Nick’s kids, correct?” The woman smiled.

“Yes Ma’am, we are.” Thor replied with a smile.

She nodded, then looked around the waiting room. “Oh dear, where is that husband of mine? Oh, there he is! Alexander, sweetheart, look who’s here!”

Pierce came over, a smile on his face. “Nick’s kids! Well, it is good to see all of you! Why are you all here at the hospital?”

“Tony is in the hospital. We’re trying to figure out what’s wrong. He collapsed in the yard.” Thor replied.

                        Steve glanced at him.

Thor had his fists clenched, but behind his back so Pierce wouldn’t see.

“Oh…I’m so sorry to hear that. I hope he gets better soon.” Pierce whispered.

                        “I do too.” Alec agreed.

Steve scoffed again. “No. You. Don’t.” He snarled.

Abigail raised an eyebrow, and Alice gasped. “That was rude!” She cried.

Pierce laughed. “Well…doesn’t someone need an attitude adjustment?”

Steve wrapped his arms around Peter tighter.

                        His heartbeat increased.

                        But Pierce couldn’t…wouldn’t…do anything.

                        Right?

“Nick hasn’t dealt with your problems, has he?” Pierce laughed. “I knew he wouldn’t be a good father, especially for you. You need a…firmer hand. And Nick most certainly does not have that. Phil and Maria most certainly don’t.”

“Well…Nick doesn’t handle things the way you do,” Loki replied, “but that doesn’t mean he’s not a good father.”

Pierce raised an eyebrow. “And how would you know?”

“I’ve been his son since I was four years old. That’s how. Maybe Nick, Phil, and Maria have a different idea of discipline. And it seems to have worked.” Loki stepped in front of Steve. “Much better than your methods have.”

“And what is that supposed to mean?” Abigail asked, her eyes narrowing.

“Simply put, your son is a bully. I wouldn’t be surprised if your daughter is as well. Don’t you think that shows that your methods of discipline aren’t exactly…working?”

                        “Excuse me?” Pierce snarled.

                        Steve clutched Peter even tighter.

Peter stirred and awoke. “Steve…too tight…” He complained.

                        Steve loosened his grip.

“The way you disciplined Steve didn’t work either, did it? He still caused trouble, didn’t he? He still stole and lied. So…maybe Nick has the right idea. Besides, from what I’ve heard, you don’t discipline. You abuse.”

Abigail gasped, and Pierce took a step towards Loki.

                        But Loki didn’t budge.

He held his chin high and stood.

                        Steve didn’t understand how.

                        “Learn your place, Loki.”

“I know my place. I know where I belong and who I am. And I don’t need people like you to tell me what my worth is. Good day, Mr. Pierce.” Loki turned around. Interlocked his arm with Steve’s. “Come along, Steve. Let’s go sit with the others.”
