@whalekeeper In my published books? Plenty! Mostly because they were written for kids with special needs. My main character has a speech impediment, and each of his friends has something different: colorblindness, deafness, one uses a wheelchair, and one has sensory issues.

In my fanfics? Not too many, admittedly. Most of my characters are soldiers and whatnot so….. If it does happen, it’s typically a missing limb or eye.

My Bad Batch ones have them more than my TF2 ones. Post-fall Tech might count as an amputee cause he’s got a prosthetic leg. In one AU I had Crosshair blinded and his arc is him coming to terms with the fact that his time as a sniper is over but he’s still got a lot left to do with his life, but that was only one short fic and I haven’t written anything for it since. In many AU’s I have Hunter lose one eye and wear an eye patch. All this goes without saying the canonical injuries that Wrecker and Echo have, but those don’t seem to affect them too much and I didn’t come up with them, so I don’t count them.

There is one instance in the HTTYD inspired TF2 fic that might count, and that involves Sniper losing most of his right arm after a dragon fight and having Engineer build him a prosthetic much like the one he himself has. It was more of a way to mirror Hiccup than anything else tbh.

Also, I’m undecided on this, but Felicity might have a very minor physical disability with some long term frostbite damage from her childhood. (Ironic and very on the nose, I know)

Um so is this a invitation to rant about Flax?

          XD

Flax had a disease that made him lose his feathers (This came from my phase of being obsessed with birds where I learned that birds have a limited number of feather sets in their lifetime, leading to ones who pluck their feather to become bald) So he isn’t able to fly even after it’s cured. Because his body is build for flying long distances and walking short distances, he can’t walk super far. When he’s with his mixed race group of friends it isn’t too bad, but in the society where he came from he is considered disabled. The infrastructure is built around flying, meaning he has to take a underground subway with the human servants (And the grumpy elderly who can’t fly and detest having to be with the servants lol). Also, there are tons of balconies people fly between so getting around of foot isn’t a priority. Basically, environment impacts how much a disabled person is affected.

As far as what he’s like and his role in the story, it’s kinda just like any other character. I wanted it to be obvious that getting used to his disability and navigating how it affects him shouldn’t be his main character arc. It’s important and does affect his other arcs but him being disabled is not the first thing I want people to think of. I think if somebody forgets Flax’s name, they’re much more likely to think of a trait other than his disability to describe which character they were talking about, and that’s how I want it.

I would say Flax comes across the most difficulties in the rather closed minded nation where his people come from. It’s not common to see people who have lost feathers because diseases are treated promptly; it’s thought of as a thing of the past, so people are alarmed when they see him and assume he might be infectious, hence one of the reasons he wears a veil over his wings. It’s kind of one of those things like people could get used to his wings looking like that, but it’s not worth the shocked looks from strangers every day. It also signifies that he’s disabled so people don’t try to jump off a balcony with him lol.

Anyways he’s not like super disabled but it’s a spectrum and he’s definitely somewhere on it.

Also Tauren used to be blind in one eye but I think I threw that out lol.

Oooo, interesting question. I’ve definitely wanted to include more “different” abilities. It’s just a bit of a balance, since I want everything to fit a character and story. I won’t add something just to rep it, without any reason in the story or character’s personality. If that makes sense? I have been wanting to write something Deaf cultured, since I’m a little familiar/in love with with that culture. I just haven’t yet. Otherwise…

Well, there’s Onnendel. Blind, although he will get his eyesight back. It’s really a scary thing in his culture, though, since they prioritize sight much.

And while he is not disabled, Viktor’s (and Yosi’s) story really gets into the beauty of scars (both physical and not). His injuries were inspired by the story of Melody Bokun, and some study I’d done into child trauma recovery. We like to live in a world where injuries heal completely, especially for young people. Scars, especially burn scars, are phycologically terrifying. Horrifying. The survivor loses so much of their identity to their past, and even the smallest details of their lives from the way they eat to the way they smile is affected. Not only is unconditional family love vital to most children’s recovery, but learning to see the miracle in pain is vital to pretty much everyone. God often heals through brokenness, brings hope through scars. Not despite them. (Anyway, sorry. I may be a bit passionate about that. XD)

Of course, in the same series there’s a paraplegic. Even though his struggle is fairly mild for our day, in an ancient setting it’s really difficult. He’s pretty cool.

Otherwise, I’ve played with characters having speech impediments, reading issues, Deafness, blindness, and just mental differences. I’ve had a few characters be amputees, mostly soldiers, lol. A WWI era Canadian, and a modern IDF fellow. One loses a hand, I think, while the second lost part of his leg.

You have listened to fears, child. Come, let me breathe on you... Are you brave again? -Aslan

I have several ducks with them. Not so many humans for some reason, probably because the ducks just came through a couple major wars.

I have a duck named Emerald Evergreen with a peg leg. It’s not really a plot point, just part of his character. He had it made extra heavy so he can dive bomb people and knock them out with it. XD Queen Natalie Mallard’s grandfather was unable to fly on account of having his wings shot through with a cannon. Another duck, long after Queen Natalie’s time, named Amethyst, is mute. In the duck world, she’s mute after a terrible encounter with a vicious monster that traumatized her and stole her voice. In the real world, (she’s a rubber duck of mine), my brother pulled out her squeaker and lost it on the floor, and then it got sucked up by the vacuum. I was furious, but it makes for some interesting character development. XD Again, not a plot point, just part of her character. Also Lacey, a broken rubber duck, is an invalid in the duck world, but her disability hasn’t actually been named.

Thanks for the replies! I will read them to my brother. And I find the answers quite interesting myself. Sometimes it’s funny to try answering the question and realizing a character is disabled without ever thinking about it before.

oh yeah also the Rexy series is on Amazon for sale if you’d like to pick up some copies. (shameless plug lol) Just look up “Rexy the T.Rex” and you should find a white book with a hand-drawn blue and orange dinosaur. From there I think you can access the series page and find all the other books.
