@anyone
Here’s a weird thing I realized while reading the portals story and I need to tell someone. Do you guys actually picture your characters’ faces in your minds while you write them to the point where you could recognize them if you met them irl? Because I have no idea how to do that. I can picture details like facial expressions or movements really clearly, but the exact face shape is super blurry. Any pale, curly haired guy with glasses could be Lois to me.
I’m also realizing that I often can’t remember real people’s faces when I’m not looking at them. I recognize them when I see them again, of course, but I can’t picture them when they’re not here. If I focus really hard, I can picture a few of my family members though.
Is anyone else like this? I can’t tell if this is normal.

August 4, 2025 at 5:27 pm #204947I do not. I can see vague impressions and shapes, and I can know what their individual physical attributes are, but I can’t put them together into a face in my mind. It’s weird. Idk if it’s normal either.
I can picture the faces of people I know, though.

August 4, 2025 at 6:49 pm #204948My characters tend to be blurry, yeah. Some more than others. If I’ve drawn the character before, then I’ll picture an version of the drawing, just in motion. A lot of the time I just picture the motion itself, abstract, or a roughly scratched drawing. Just realized I see 70% of my charries as animated, not real life. XD
Also because of synesthesia, I associate characters with colors, so instead of picturing their faces, I’ll see them from a bird’s eye view with the back of their head to me, and they have an aura made of their color. Marcel is pink, Enid is glow-in-the-dark green, that sort of thing.
I’ve never had trouble picturing real people, though. Can you picture your family’s faces from different perspectives?

August 4, 2025 at 9:44 pm #204951That’s a very good question.
It depends. Some characters I see in flashes of movement/emotion, so their exact features can be unclear. Others I see so clearly it’s irritating because finding face claims becomes twice as hard.
Part of it depends on if I’ve drawn them before, and part of it just on how connected their personality is to their face. I guess I see more of their attitude with a few specific details.
I can typically remember what people look like, but it’s more like a… Condensed form? Like, maybe not a 100% accurate image because certain features are emphasized as I connect them to the person’s personality. For instance, I see my mother in snapshots, focusing on her curly hair(which I love, but didn’t get, lol) and the most expressive parts of her face, as well as the general shape of her face and like, the way her head moves and how she talks with her hands.
It gets a little harder if I haven’t seen the person for a while, but the same “snapshot” rule applies. And really, this also explains how I see characters. Some have more “snapshots” and clearer “resolution”. While I haven’t met one of my own characters before, I have seen people who reminded me of them but always spotted differences.

That’s interesting. It’s fun learning how other people’s brains work.
Can you picture your family’s faces from different perspectives?
No. I can remember basic stuff like hair and if they wear glasses, of course, but the faces are really hard. At first, I can only remember a picture I drew of my dad once, my mom’s hair, and my brother’s hat. Then if I focus, I can picture my brother’s dumb grin and my dad’s amused look, and a side profile of my dad laughing. Other than that I’m totally blank.

I can sort of think of my characters when I’m writing about them. If I focus really hard I might be able to make out a face or two. But usually they’re in my own art style, or whatever art style I’ve seen them in if they’re “borrowed” characters. They’re never hyper-realistic live action movie type. And imagining the faces comes at the expense of what’s around them, y’know?
It’s so fun to imagine my stories animated though.

August 5, 2025 at 10:36 pm #205001@ellette-giselle Yeah that makes sense with your photographic memory.
My memory sucks. Wanna trade?

August 6, 2025 at 12:45 pm #205011I have a very vivid imagination, to the point that I don’t ever want my books made into a movie, because the characters wouldn’t look like I imagined them. I have this problem with other books made into movies too. Characters are more vivid in my mind than real people.

I don’t think I’m a very visual person either. I can imagine my family’s faces if I try… but not very well. And honestly, I rarely try to imagine what my characters look like as I’m writing. ?? I guess it’s more about the words and emotions to me.

August 19, 2025 at 11:05 am #205211Random thought/note. I recently made a list of every character of mine… at least, that I could think of. I want to draw them all eventually. ?✍? I have 606 characters. 400 are male and 206 are female.
