So my friends got me a ticket and I went into it ready to hate it. I hadn’t seen the trailer, but the cover had a girl in armor on the front, (small spoiler, she never ends up wearing armor ever.) She wears a tight costume for one of her outfits and I don’t love it, but all the rest of her outfits are dresses and have long, flowing skirts. She is not stronger then any guy and that is very clear. (another slight spoiler, she never bests any man by swordplay or strength alone. If she bests a man, it is because of surroundings being to her advantage or by a chance that could have caused either one to have a tremendous upper hand.) Also, she never fights on the battle field and the only times she ever encounters combat it makes sense. The guys are really strong characters and perhaps painted as greater heroes then she was.
I actually didn’t send the trailer to y’all because she is made out to be some warrior chic in the trailer and it was bad enough that I wouldn’t have watched the movie had I seen it. The movie is entirely different.
I mean, I think at least linus has heard me rant about women fighting and overcoming men because they’re girl characters. So, saying I like this is saying a lot.
Yes, the art is really beautiful! A lot of watercolor and it’s a gentle anime stile.

December 26, 2024 at 2:36 pm #192943@ellette-giselle I think we’ve all heard you rant about this topic lol
I mean, most of us have female fighter/warrior/soldier/whatever characters for some reason. So we were bound to get the “this is why I don’t quite believe in that” talk (which I don’t think is bad and might actually help us improve our characters)

I mean, this isn’t a matter of personal conviction. This is biological and physiological sense. Few who have sense would disagree with this.

exactly. But a lot of movies and books now days basicly have it be jyst because she’s a girl she can win sort of thing. You know, “girl power” *rolls eyes*
So yeah, I was glad that they didn’t do that!

December 26, 2024 at 2:49 pm #192947@ellette-giselle yeah, “girl power” and whatnot is kinda way overblown these days.
Although in the past in many cultures, women were not exactly treated nicely (or sometimes even like people) either, so I think as a society we just kinda vacillate between “too much power” or “too little power” given to them.
not that that’s right, but it’s just what happens.
But I’m glad you think they made her a strong female character without messing up. Maybe I could pick up some tips for my characters if I ever go see it.

December 26, 2024 at 3:14 pm #192952I’m glad you liked it! And I’m glad it seemed more realistic than you thought it was going to be, that’s great. Yeah, not a fan of the outfit but I’m glad it was mostly in the trailer.
Yeah the whole tough girl thing is really interesting. It’s weird, but I have a theory to why it happens. For multiple issues, I think people swing in the opposite direction of ick, then making it bad in another way. We used to have poor character writing for shows and movies where the women were damsels in distress, didn’t have a lot of personality, ect. Now it’s more often that we see women who have physical strength and lack of emotions, and still have the problem of no personality. Ugh.

December 26, 2024 at 3:22 pm #192955December 26, 2024 at 3:23 pm #192956I know. Can’t we just settle nicely in the middle instead of falling off the road on one side or the other? lol.
Anyhow, I think this movie is a fairly well done example of a strong girl who isn’t a long haired guy. I don’t agree with all her lines of thought/reasoning but still it’s a good example of staying more in the middle of the road.

December 26, 2024 at 5:34 pm #192973Yes, I’ve seen that film. I wasn’t really interested in it until you said it was amazing! Now, I’ll have to check it out! Oh, you are so right. I listened a bit to the music and it was awesome!

December 26, 2024 at 5:40 pm #192975Do check it out! I took the family to see it this morning. It was the second time in a row for me in the space of just a few days, and it’s as good as the first time! Maybe even better.
Warning: When i first saw it my friend and I were hanging onto each other for several parts, and there was one section where we both cried. In the theater. In public. But then again, it’s only the best of stories that can make you do that.
