And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who couldn't hear the music
August 15, 2026 at 5:17 pm #213350Wolf has decided to unknowingly cause trouble.
Behind every innocent character going into the soup for the third time is the author who pushed him into it.Wolfgang
He grabbed Wilhelm’s arm. “I know that boy. He was the one who wanted to wrestle at breakfast. Or was it a fistfight he wanted? He wanted to do something.” His eyes darted around the room. “Where are the swords? Oh, look at the climbing wall! Do they have horses hear? Reinhard loves horses. Oh, I know him! At least, I saw him,” he added, pointing toward the neatly dressed young man who seemed to be looking for someone. “Let’s go ask him to wrestle or duel!” He plowed into the gymnasium, making straight for Jasper, dragging Wilhelm behind him.
[Either he runs into Jasper, or Jasper finds Remington. Either way, this ends very amusingly in my books.]

August 15, 2026 at 5:44 pm #213351Glad you’re back!
Ahhh Wolfgang! Lol.
Hmm.
By the by, Wilhelm is so funny. Like, he’s a cinnamon roll that lives in such a violent world that it’s normal for him. 😂 He’s considering Jasper’s unofficial appointment to the field quite seriously. The only thing that makes a meeting “friendly” is if fake/blunted weapons are used. He will fight like he’s in open battle and must protect his leige/knight/father. Wild squire child. If anyone has read Men of Iron, he’s got a big of Myles Falworth in him.
Wilhelm
“What? Who?”” Wilhelm planted his feet, a in action that stopped Wolfgang just long enough for Wilhelm to sort out the boy’s words. There, hunting around the courtyard was Jasper. His following loitered about the area, keeping a little distance from a tall, dark eyed man in the doorway.
Or was he simply an older boy? Wilhelm frowned as Wolfgang propelled them forward again. There was a constant stream of excited thoughts pouring from Wolfgang.
“Do you know Jasper? We have an appointment to meet on the field of friendly combat. You might join…” Once more, Wilhelm found himself interjecting his own words into he stream. He had to wonder if they would make it against the current. His sleeve was getting twisted horribly around his arm where Wolfgang’s fingers were latched on. Wilhelm set his teeth. “If it please your grace, may we approach people at a civil speed? You move like a young tatzelwurm.”

He stopped dead in his tracks. “Tatzelwurm? What is that?” He looked at Jasper again. “You know his name?”

…
August 15, 2026 at 6:45 pm #213357Ok this is funny. Wolfgang may actually be vaguely familiar with that term, since it’s an old German/Bavarian folk tale that continued to be prevalent into the early 1900s, especially since several naturalists studied it and thought the creature really existed.
Wilhelm
“A dragon that lives in mountains and dazzles its prey to their deaths.” He had to laugh a little at the comparison once it was out of his mouth. “And yes, I know his name. We met last night. We are neither friends nor foes, but he was polite enough. Invited me to battle this morning.” Wilhelm trailed off as he watched the lordly prince continue to lurk about the bushes. There was a determination to his movements that only grew in peculiarity the longer Wilhelm watched.
“What a strange interest in foilage. He must be after someone.”

August 15, 2026 at 7:13 pm #213359Remington
Ari’s warning was not particularly helpful. Remington closed his eyes and tried to think.
It would have been nice to do something fun without having to think and worry about other things. He could run and hide all he wanted, but sitting under a bush was not a great way to spend his time.
At the end of the day, he was going to be found out anyway. Why prolong the discomfort? Why avoid everything?
He sighed and slowly, painfully, extracted himself from the bush.
Leaves and twigs stuck in his hair. He pretended to realize Jasper was there and put on a surprised grin. “Ah! Hello, my High Commandant! Here you are, and I somehow missed you until just now. What a fine morning, isn’t it? I hit a ball into a jay nest, and I had a hard time figuring out which egg was man-made, ha, ha! Such things happen to me more than I would like to admit.”
At least that was a believable story.
Before things went south, Remington got to the point. “I’m very sorry for what I did. Please forgive me, Jasper. I was out and about, and… Slip of the hand, it was, not sleight of hand.”
The tall war prince beckoned for the stuttering king to follow him. They walked far enough away from the other courtyard denizens to no longer hear them.
“Do you have another?” Jasper said in a low, almost comforting tone.
No reprimand? Nothing? “N-No, I don’t have another.”
“Give me your key, then.”
Remington slipped his bedroom key out of his laced sleeve, and dropped it to the ground without hesitation. “I can make you a copy, if you’d like.”
“You will do that.” Jasper put a hand on Remington’s shoulder. “It’s fine. I understand you are not the kind of person to be trusted with things like that. You can’t handle yourself or anything. It was my fault for giving it to you.”
“…Thank you?”
“With that out of the way, I think it would do you some good to watch us tonight.”
The touch put a sort of freezing effect upon the young king. He couldn’t move, his body suddenly made of stone. His knees locked up, his shoes and jacket suddenly tight, as if he couldn’t breathe or move in them. “I… would rather not. It’s just not my sort of thing. Not good for my health or anyone’s health, really. In fact, I don’t think we should -“
“No, no, I insist. Remember the importance of what we’re doing. Few for the many. Remember what that means to you.”
Few for the many.
He was right. If Remington helped, everything would be alright. He would just have to swallow down his initial instincts and do this. After a long moment of trying to settle his thoughts, he muttered, “Can we at least attempt something more constructive?”
“That’s up to you. But don’t waste your time on someone like, say, Verenion. You can’t reason with someone like that. Check on Kemp and… what were their names? The other two.”
“Callum and Ellis. They seem great to me.” Good, real people. “Don’t.”
“Don’t what?”
No trace of amusement or light was in Remington’s voice anymore. “Just… please don’t.”
With that, Jasper let go. He left the courtyard, walking back into the gymnasium. His group left with him, breaking into conversation and laughter, and the confrontation was over. If it could even be called a confrontation.
…
