Ellis perked up again.
“Let’s go then! You’re not annoying. And if you were, I probably wouldn’t say. Do you like fencing?”

“Yes, I do.”
Ellis was happy with that. The two boys jogged back to the academy, past trimmed hedges and trees, and back to the more open area where the gymnasium was.
The gymnasium sat behind the academy, so there was a bit of distance between the two buildings. Even though it was separate from the main building and much smaller, it was no less impressive. It was large enough to support what had to be a vaulted ceiling. The windows – tall and arched – were set high into the walls, out of reach of swinging weapons or surprise missiles. They sparkled in the morning sunshine. A bricked pathway led to the entrance.
Students strode in and out. Swords swung from their hips, and some of them carried equipment Moth didn’t recognize. A lot of the boys hung around in groups. The warm, breezy weather was beautiful, and with a place for combat just in reach, this had to be a great place to spend the morning.
“Does your brother like to fence with you?” Moth asked, as he walked alongside Ellis.

“Depends on his mood. Lucian can be a bit of a sore loser.” Ellis smiled, and the two of them stepped into the building. Sounds of playful shouting, talking, and weapons hitting their targets echoed off the walls. Ellis admired the equipment around them as they headed towards the fencing area.

Moth
The gym was much larger than the dining hall. Light shone through the windows, and the wooden floor glowed. Wood beams laced together in the vaulted ceiling, high above their heads. Boys’ voices and footsteps echoed, and steel clashed against steel.
Young men were dualling and wrestling everywhere. They stood in pairs or in groups, comparing weapons or techniques. Figures dashed back and forth, taking calculated steps as they tested each other.
Racks of equipment and practice weaponry were attached to the walls and floor. There were dummies, punching bags, and other solid targets. The weapons were even more varied than the targets, and some of them were exotic. Moth couldn’t have named them if he tried.
Artificial climbing holds were installed on one of the walls. Mats lay on the floor, ropes hung from the rafters, and all sorts of other useful structures were spaced out from each other. Once again, they were difficult to identify.
There was an opening in the back wall, with two large doors pulled back, allowing the training to spill into the outdoors. A back yard shone in the sun, surrounded by a stone wall. Figures with swords were attacking wooden stakes.
“It’s warm in here.” Moth followed Ellis, eyes wide as he took everything in. He veered around a boy who was throwing knives at the wall.
