Moth
“Goodbye, Ari,” Moth called. But Ari was already gone.
The fairie prince lingered in the space where the other boy had been. He let his feet carry him away, back to the skylight, as his mind cluttered with thoughts.
He had almost said, goodbye, brother. He had to remember, these people were used to having many friends. This was not like a couple little children making friends with each other in ten seconds flat. It was strange to be so immediately fascinated by another kid his age.
He had to be less hopeful. In addition to everything, Moth was not human.
He wasn’t much like the other faeries, either.
No one will ever know your true name.
Moth winced. He held up his hand. He was absent-mindedly picking at his fingers, as he sometimes did. The skin around his fingernails was bleeding.
He shook his head to clear it, and climbed back into his bedroom. He shut the skylight behind him – in case it rained – and settled down on the bare floor.
He lay there for a while, but it was hard to sleep. He tossed and turned, muttering orisons and random phrases. It was a good idea to repeat the story he had learned that night, so he told it to himself. The full thing, not just the words he had recited to the moon.
“There was a great misunderstanding… the nation of Iloom… grief, loss of life… the moon made a deal…”
His body flickered like a broken lightbulb as he finished the story, then went out. He sighed and curled up to asleep. But something distracted him.
Behind the wallpaper of his bedroom, seemingly inside the wall, someone was whistling.
Prickles ran up Moth’s spine.
He sat as still as stone, and didn’t dare move or breathe. There was a temptation to crawl closer to the wall, but if he did, the floor might creak.
The whistling was surprisingly loud; if anyone was trying to sneak around, they were doing a bad job of it. There was a cough and a long silence. Finally, without warning, something hit the inside of the wall with a sharp thwack.
Moth blinked. He lay there in the dark, staring at the ceiling. Let it be my neighbor. Perhaps it’s just a loud neighbor.
The sound had been too close for comfort. Someone was inside the walls. At the very least, they weren’t on a mission to enter Moth’s room, and that was the best thing to hope for.
Curiosity, a hungry flame, burned in his mind. Why would someone else be out at night? Was it a thief, a mischievous student, or a servant? Perhaps nocturnal wanderings were more normal than everyone said they were.
The sounds stirred a memory, deep in Moth’s heart. He used to hear strange sounds all around him as a little child. They comforted him, in a way. Singing, skittering, scratching… crying, rattling throats… muffled voices…
The flame dulled into an ember as Moth’s eyes fluttered, and he fell asleep, curled in a fetal position on the dusty floor.

July 21, 2026 at 9:25 am #212731Would it help if Moth found out Ari isn’t entirely human?
Also, poor guy. He needs hugs and a big fluffy bed to disappear into.

His bare feet whispered over the roof tiles. Starlight reflected silver flecks in his dark eyes.
Starlight. He reached up to brush a few longer locks of hair behind his ear. The balcony below him waited. But he was tired and didn’t feel like climbing.
Ari sat down at the edge, turned into his stomach, and slid off. A last minute grip on the eaves swung him in to land square on the balcony railing. He stepped down and into his bedroom.
Long shadows flickered along the wall, dancing with the low light of a dying fire. Ari drew the curtains together over the glass balcony doors to shut out the night.
Slime, dirt, and blood streaked his clothes, his skin. No telling where the blood came from. He poured water into the wash basin. It’s coldness numbed his skin as he scrubbed.
His clothes would have ruined had they been anything finer or of worse make. As it was, they’d wash. Ari dumped them in a basket by the door. Let this hall’s laundry maid deal with them in the morning. He was going to bed.

July 21, 2026 at 10:18 am #212733Now, for sometime in the early morning…..
Dun dun dunnnnnnn….
LeQoi
How easily people boiled over. A little heat, a little pressure…a few fortunate slips of the tablespoon.
The Master chef stared at the radish faced man before him. The fellow’s doctor’s coat and hair were quite rumpled. How unprofessional.
The man frowned. “Are you the supervisor of this kitchen?”
What a question. LeQoi raised a single eyebrow–his left–in answer. Icy silence sifted down around him. Kitchen maids wilted over their croissant dough.
“Ah, good.” The stranger nodded and leaned heavily against the counter behind him. “I am the resident physician at this school. It has come to my attention–”
LeQoi stiffened. A polite smile glazed his sherbet red lips.
“–that we have had several cases of unidentified foodborne illness in the past three weeks. In fact, I had five cases just this past night.”
Five poisoned princes. What dreadful alliteration. LeQoi’s polite smile chilled with amusement.
“And?”
The doctor blinked and took a step back. “Whatever the cause of this illness must be found out and taken care of. I’m warning you that we need higher sanitation and illness prevention in food prep or-”
“Mon cher ami.” LeQoi draped a long boney hand on the doctor’s shoulder. “Think a moment, if you can. Those children do not restrict their food consumption to what is prepared in my spotless kitchen.”
The man looked uncomfortable. The chef patted his shoulder for good measure.
“However, rest assured if anything were to be tampered with in my domain, I will certainly be the first to know.”
With an uncertain nod the doctor fled. Leqoi watched the door swing closed behind him before turning back to the preparation of breakfast.
Oui, il serait le premier à le savoir. Il serait le seul à savoir.

July 21, 2026 at 10:21 am #212734Would it help if Moth found out Ari isn’t entirely human?
It might. He cares very quickly about other people, but he gets ignored a lot. His world is filled with unfeeling faeries, eldritch gods, monsters, etc. who don’t need connections and relationships to thrive. Moth is just a little dude who wants to hug other fantastical beings but knows they won’t hug him back.
So even though Ari is not an unfeeling eldritch being, Moth is preemptively steeling himself for disappointment.
Also, poor guy. He needs hugs and a big fluffy bed to disappear into.
Yeah, that’s true. He loves hugs.

July 21, 2026 at 10:25 am #212735LeQoi!! My favorite side character. All the food metaphors make me happy. LeQoi is almost scary, and I know he would scare me if he existed in real life, but it’s really just a side effect of his creative passion

July 21, 2026 at 10:37 am #212736I have these Moth sketches from a few days ago. I didn’t clean them up or anything (the ink brush was uncontrollable!) but you get the gist of what he looks like. I think he should be paler and not quite so golden, so imagine these sketches have intense lighting or something.

July 21, 2026 at 10:43 am #212737AHHH! I love the picture!!!! SO CUTE!!!!!!!!!
Wolfgang has to be ADHD or something. That boy is going to grow up and cause havoc.
Don’t know if he’s ADHD…. but yes. That’s exactly what he does do…..
And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who couldn't hear the music
July 21, 2026 at 10:48 am #212738Thank you!! <33 I was pressured to finish the drawings quickly and it seems that I thrive off pressure
Don’t know if he’s ADHD…. but yes. That’s exactly what he does do…..
Then that will be my official headcanon. I believe Wolfgang is ADHD, he just happens to be from a time where no one would know that.

July 21, 2026 at 11:09 am #212739Moth is babbbyyyyy… O.O
Must hug must hug must hug
*Melts*
Despite his prickly nature, Ari doesn’t mind hugs. He’s got a little brother and sister he watches out for, so while he doesn’t like his personal space invaded by strangers or anyone he isn’t close to, if Moth gets close enough he can hug Ari all he wants. So basically once Moth gets past Ari’s trust issues. And Ari is probably going to unofficially adopt Moth as a little brother.

July 21, 2026 at 12:31 pm #212741😛 Yes, he is a babyyy
And Ari is probably going to unofficially adopt Moth as a little brother.
I shall look forward to the time when they are bonded like that.
By the way, you said Ari is half human? What else is he? Or is that a secret I’m not supposed to know yet?

Not a secret. Just prepare for an info dump as this is complicated. XD
*Deep inhale*
So, according to world building, all the people’s began as the same family who through different choices in life were given different destinies. Ari’s father had two brothers. The eldest’s line ended up as basically high elves/like the stars in Narnia, the next ended up as a kind of middle elf, and then there’s Veren. He kind of murdered some people (kinslaying) and got stuck with being a full on mortal (but like with pre flood Biblical ages range that will slowly finish diminish). However, Ari was born early in the whole judgment process and thus his choices will decide which group he becomes more like.
So, in essence, he’s half elf.
