Ellis
“I haven’t fully decided yet. I like fencing and horseback riding. I hope there’s instructors who specialize in that. Maybe you and Remington can join me.” He paused, glancing around. “I really do wonder what Remington has gotten to. Maybe I should-”
“Ellis! I’ve been looking for you,” someone from behind interrupted.
It was Lucian. Ellis knew it before he turned to look.
“It’s almost curfew.” Lucian had his usual firm, almost tired expression on his face. His blond hair fell into his eyes as he gave a worried glance around.
“Yes,” Ellis responded dryly. “Almost.”
Lucian gave a polite nod to Callum, ignoring Ellis’ response. “Forgive me for the interruption. I’m Lucian. Ellis’ older brother.”

Unhappy? He shrugged. If he was being honest, he couldn’t remember the last time he had been what most people called happy. Content, safe…innocent.
What did those words even mean anymore?
“I don’t get thrashed here.” But then, he didn’t have a little brother and sister to stick up for. His eyes lost their faint light.
This was a strange discussion. Ari glanced at the golden headed boy beside him. Moth would probably not talk to him again after tonight. Nobody ever lasted long around him.
Still, the boy wasn’t like most of the students at this oh so official establishment. Ari hoped he’d find a friend.

“It’s nice to meet you.” Callum nodded, looking thoughtfully from one brother to the other.
There was a slight electric charge between them. Whatever their dynamic was, it had to be interesting. Callum opened his mouth to say more to Lucian, but was interrupted.
“Hello, there!” A bright voice sounded near them. It was Remington. “Like I never left! Ha, ha!”
The lavender-clad prince held a silver tray in one hand, glasses of pink lemonade sparkling next to tea sandwiches. He wore a smile as usual, but his face was noticeably paler than before, and he spoke as if he wasn’t paying attention to his own words.
“There are three of you now! How charming.” He handed Callum and Ellis their drinks, then handed his to Lucian. “You should all get up and go to bed! Curfew is upon us! Quite a nice night, eh? Hehe, erm…”
A bell rang from inside. It was a low, slow sound that echoed with finality. The servants would probably sweep the grounds any second now.
Remington chucked the plate of sandwiches into a bush. He yanked Callum up by an arm. “Come on.”
Callum almost lost his balance, but managed to keep his dignity. Clearly curfew was a much stricter part of the day than he had expected.

“Thrashed?” Moth stopped walking. His heart leaped into his throat. “Do you get hit when you’re home?”

Moth stopped walking. Ari turned to look back at him.
“Sometimes.”
The unsettling level of concern on the other boy’s face didn’t fade. Ari shoved down the rising discomfort.
“I’ve got four half-brothers, you know, warriors all decades older than me. The oldest was married with his own son before I showed up.” He folded his arms, vague annoyance written in his face. “Of course I get hit. I also hit back. Makes you stronger.”
Hit and hit back, the basic philosophy behind every type of fighting. Except it was generally considered a good idea to be the one to hit first.

“Kindness sn’t generally considered a masculine virtue in my family.” He shrugged again. “But when I was seven Halir carried me two miles back home when I was thrown from my horse. He and his twin are the closest to my age.”

It is the great trial of his older brother’s life.

July 18, 2026 at 1:40 pm #212670“I wasn’t going to stir up a fight the way Ekhard would. I was just going to… you know… fight,” Wolfgang replied, a look of wounded dignity on his face.

July 18, 2026 at 2:04 pm #212671Thanks! Ari is technically from the “mythology”/history another WIP, but we were planning on writting his story as part of a background book for the series. His family is the one responsible for most of the chaos of his time…and later. XD

Moth stitched his brows together, and as Ari explained a little, his heart twinged again. There was injustice here. “I will practice archery with you tomorrow.”

July 18, 2026 at 4:06 pm #212674If anyone picks on Moth at this point, Ari is going to pulverize them.
Ari
His eyebrows shot up. He turned back to the path ahead of them to hide his confusion.
“If you want to, sure. You, you don’t…” He stopped walking again to turn a curious gaze on Moth. “You’re an archer? What bow do you prefer?”
