Moth
“No. But I’ll let you know if I do.”
Moth moved aside so Ari could see the gray door guarded a tiny, dilapidated staircase. The two of them walked up, steps creaking as they went.
At the top, Moth gazed at the empty attic-like room set before him. The darkening skylight cast little light in the corners and against the peeling wallpaper. There were stains everywhere, and stepping on the floor produced clouds of dust.
In a rather melancholy sort of way, this was a comforting room. It felt real – real as any abandoned place, probably because it seemed to hold lost memories. Moth’s shoulders shivered at the thought.
“There’s nothing in my room because I arrived out of the blue. The academy doesn’t know much about me. I also don’t have any money on me.” He chuckled gently again. “I like it just the way it is. But I realized – how will I hang out with friends if there isn’t anywhere for them to sit?”
…

This place was old. Or maybe just forgotten. Words had never been his strong point.
It was also bare besides the coat of dust hanging around them, but Ari didn’t notice. His gaze was latched on the dim square of glass in the ceiling.
“Does it open?” He looked back at Moth. The boy had said something…ah.
“The floor’s a place to sit, isn’t it?”

“But people don’t want dust on their clothes. I ought to get furniture, do you think?”
Ari wanted a window open; he had pointed at one of the squares in the multifaceted skylight.
Moth put his foot on the wall, then the other. The bottoms of his feet invisibly attached to the papered plaster. He walked up the wall, then hung upside down from the skylight, far above the other boy’s head.
He knelt, still upside down, pressed his face against the glass, and stared out into the murky gray light. With much difficulty, he yanked the frame. The metal shrieked. The glass pulled away.
“I’d like some advice,” he said. “I want to make this room better for friends to visit. For study groups, that sort of thing. But I have no idea how. I’ve only ever lived in abandoned buildings, so this attic they gave me is my… normal. I’m a bit of a squatter in my own kingdom.”
…
June 17, 2026 at 9:42 am #212401Oh my word. O.O
Ari
It was perfectly normal for people to walk up walls. Definitely. Ari’s unhinged mouth had nothing to do with it.
Definitely.
Black stars.
The window screeched open, letting in a want of misty night air. Ari managed to snap his mouth shut. Moth was talking again in his quiet way, crouched two feet over Ari’s head.
Definitly not the kind of fairie his mother told him about.
“Oh. I…see. Well,” he dragged his eyes away from the boy overhead to study the room, though what he was looking for was beyond him. Furniture was a thing that was just there or not in his experience. “The dust should probably go. But I mean, if you like it, it is your room.” He shrugged.
“My mother had–has–a large rug and cushions on the floor of her receiving chamber. That would probably be easiest for study groups. You’d want a lamp or two in here too.”

“I believe traditionally now would be the moment when you slash my throat for being such a dunce as to let you take my sword like that.” He laughed again. “But yes, I’ll parley if you like, and I’ll do it sitting down. I’m done in.” He threw himself on the floor as he said it, wiping his face with his sleeve. “You’re not half bad at all.”

He crouched on his heels and finally let his grin out.
“Thine ears perchance.” He handed Wolfgang’s sword back. “But it was a good fight. I’ve never seen a style like yours.”

June 17, 2026 at 11:00 am #212405That was rather short. Here’s an extension:
Quiet had returned to his room, but the place was pleasantly rattled. Woven rush mats lay in scattered heaps across the floor. The table was closer to the wall than it had been before. Wilhelm stretched is arms over his head and sighed.
“My terms are easy enough. You shall hold the House of Kemp in honor whenever you speak of us. If you ever do, of course.”

“I should say the same of your style. As for holding the House of Kemp in honor, I’d have done that from the moment we became friends. We are friends, aren’t we?” he added, looking anxiously at the boy.

“A lamp or two. Yes.” Moth hung from the window by a hand, then dropped on all fours to the floor. He settled down peacefully in the middle of the room, cross-legged. His body, so brightly colored, almost lit up the dingy room by itself.
“What is your mother like? Did she send you here?” he asked.

He looked back at Wolfgang. The boy’s eyes were so wide Wilhelm thought he could see his reflection.
“Ja. We’re friends.”

Ari
His mother? He sat down and folded his arms across his drawn up knees.
This boy didn’t know about his family. His chin came up a fraction. There would be no misinformation or preconceived motions to combat.
“She’s a beautiful woman. Gracious, gentle hearted, a true queen. She’s a noblewoman by birth from one of the lower houses. No one was suprised when my father chose her.”
No, they’d only been shocked that he’d remarried at all. Ari shrugged.
“She persuaded my father to send me as part of a diplomatic treaty. Do you have many friends here?”

H grinned. “Good, I’m glad.” He let out a long breath. “I’m so thirsty! I could drink a river!”

June 17, 2026 at 1:49 pm #212414“Depends on how you define friends. There’s a fellow in archery that doesn’t seem to mind practicing with me.”
“People usually don’t stick around after our first meeting.” Although, he didn’t typically end up sitting on a student’s bedroom floor talking about family and friends. He studied the dust swirling around them.
How did he get here?
