“I can swim and row and climb. I fence and I brought my sword with me. I do some grappling as well, and other hand-to-hand fighting. And I could shoot a gun! If I had one. I want one, but Papa keeps forgetting. At least, that’s what he says. I play the piano, I’ve played for years. I’m working on my masterpiece. It was my mother’s song,” he added, his voice growing quiet.

Ellis exited the dining hall, his spirits and head held high. The food had been excellent, legendary even, and he had talked and laughed with a great group of boys his age. As he walked, reciting off his new friends’ names in his head to remember them, he nearly tripped over a book. He recovered his balance and looked up to see two boys, one slumped limply against the other.
“Oh dear, what on earth is going on?” He stepped closer and tried to help support the limp boy. “Is he alright?”

“My current theory is that he has fainted from pure joy,” Remington explained. The stranger next to them came up and took Callum’s other arm.
Callum groaned. He seemed to regain focus, and rubbed his temples. “I… faint easily. You… overwhelmed me.”
“Ah. Maybe I overstepped just a little bit.” Remington brought his left forefinger and thumb close together. “But I am sorry, Callum. I swear on my honor as a king, never to yell at you again. At least not as loudly.”
The other boy, who supported Callum, couldn’t be fully human. The gray of his outfit matched that of Surabond royalty, which was familiar enough, but his pointed ears and hairstyle were like something from a myth.
Remington gave him a quick, improvised bow. “Hello! And who might you be?”

Ellis returned the bow as best he could without letting go of Callum’s arm. He didn’t yet trust him to stand on his own.
“Prince Ellis Lysander Stormwatcher of Sinulon. And you?”

Callum sighed as if still recovering. Poor thing. It must have been wrong to ask him so many questions. Remington, biting his own cheek in subdued guilt, patted him on the shoulder.
He turned back to Ellis. “Remington LaCreux, prince of… well, technically king of Surabond. If you look on the map, we’re that country that looks like a butterfly drawn by a five-year-old. I don’t think I’ve heard of Sinulon just yet. But I’m sure it’s a fine place, and with a last name like you have – Stormwatcher! – I wouldn’t dare try to conquer your country. That’s a joke.”
