I have no idea. And yeah, it was multiple genealogies, so not everyone should’ve been related, but they were.

Any noun can become a verb if you don't care enough.

Yeah, I guess when you have multiple genealogies, you shouldn’t go marrying people between them. At least, not multiple times. I think I did that once somewhere in mine, but only once which prevents me from ending up with weird situations like you did.

Well, er… not really. I mean it would be cool, but I have no idea how to do that.

Feed it to chatGPT. It sometimes has good ideas.

Not in this case. I have given it this stuff and asked it to generate names based on them. The names it gave me were super generic fantasy names, some of them just directly ripped from existing franchises. In fact, I also asked it to generate fantasy names without giving it anything to base it on. It had a bunch of the same names.

Yeah, it’s terrible at names. Just so bad.

But with a language it usually just kind of comes up with gibberish that occasionally has Latin roots and can sometimes pass for a word.

The thing is, the way ChatGPT works, I’m not sure if it even can come up with something completely original. I just don’t think it would work well.

So I have a few questions about this. Is this all one language then, or is there room for diversification. I think that it can all be rationalized as cohesive, though I noticed not only Greek names, but also traces from languages like French. This is fine, just thought I’d mention it. If you want to pay a little more attention to the linguistics, there’s a few different things you can do. First, take all the consonants and vowels from the names, and list them. This doesn’t mean the letters, but the sounds they make. Also try to list consonant clusters and vowel combinations if you care to. Next, consider what features are most common, like where some sound may be found in a word, like the feature of d’s being the beginning a kings name for example. And like q in English will usually be found at the beginning of a word it’s in, though not always. Any features that seem common, you can then exaggerate to make it a more distinctive quality of the language. If you don’t want to put as much effort into it, you can do pretty well with that last step alone. That’s what Brandon Sanderson does for the most part.

ChatGPT doesn’t work with making conlangs at all, I’ve made many heart felt attempts on helping it along.

These are mostly all Arvendoran names, but some might be imported. For most of the 20,000 year period that these come from, Arvendor is a unified kingdom that takes up most of the map. However, before that, there would have been separate cultures that were combined.

                              Thanks, that was helpful!

Yeah, and names don’t have to be from the same language. A name that is noticeably foreign will be useful to say that the character is from a different context. If the character is from the same ethnic context, but has a foreign name, suggests a history with their parents, whatever that may be.
