C h a p t e r 4
Steve clenched and unclenched his fists, trying to ease them, trying to ease out the tension from that early morning training session with a punching bag.
Bandages were wrapped around his hands where he’d made the knuckles bleed, carefully and lovingly wrapped by Wanda, even though he’d yelled at her.
He’d apologized…but he still felt guilty about it.
At least he was able to give Wanda an hour or so to herself. She was out shopping for groceries, and a new dress for herself, considering her favorite old one was getting worn.
Steve had promised to watch their daughter…it was a Saturday afternoon, after all, and he had nothing to do, especially not anything important…but come to think of it, he didn’t see Azalea anywhere.
Steve stood from where he was sitting on a couch in the living room.
He heard soft singing, and followed the noise, the voice, upstairs. It was coming from Azalea’s room…there she was.
Steve knocked, and gently eased the door open.
Azalea looked up at him, sitting on the floor playing with dolls. “Hi Daddy.”
Steve leaned against the doorframe. “Hey cupcake…why are you up here alone? You can come downstairs with me, you know. Mama is at the store-“
“I know.”
“Then why are you up here alone?”
Azalea put one of her dolls in a toy car, driving them across the carpet. “You and Mama mad?”
“Mad at you? Why would we-?”
“No…you mad at Mama…and Mama mad at you. Are you and Mama mad?”
Azalea had been awake when Steve and Wanda had argued…of course. Steve would have to find a way to explain it in a simple way to his six-year-old daughter.
Steve let out a quiet sigh, stepped away from the doorframe, and settled on the floor, sitting cross-legged, beside his daughter, who still played with her dolls. “Me and Mama aren’t mad at each other, Azalea…”
“You yelled…”
“I know…and I shouldn’t have, but that doesn’t mean we’re always going to be angry…we just had a fight.”
“That means you’re angry…Mama yelled a little too…but you yelled more’s.”
“Azalea…”
“Did you tell Mama “sorry”? Mama hates yelling…yelling makes Mama cry. Did Mama cry, Daddy?”
Steve slowly nodded, unable to deny it, and also knowing that he wouldn’t lie, especially about that, to his sweet daughter. “Yes…Mama cried.”
Azalea looked up at him, as if she was searching for sincerity.
Steve gently tucked one of Azalea’s loose blonde curls behind her ear. “I made Mama cry…and I said sorry, yes, but it was wrong for me to ever yell at her. I didn’t mean to make her cry, and I’m very sorry I did. I’ll try to not let it happen again.”
Azalea’s lips pursed. “You promise, Daddy?”
“I promise.”
“Pinkie promise?” Azalea asked, offered, holding up her right pinkie.
Steve nodded and made the promise. “Pinkie promise.”
Azalea smiled and walked into his embrace, standing on his legs, wrapping her arms around his neck. “I love you, Daddy…”
Steve wrapped his arms around his daughter.
His Azalea, his flower, his daughter, his cupcake…his daughter that he wouldn’t trade for anything else in the entire world.
He’d protect her and Wanda with his life if anything ever came down to that.
They still waited for Maria and the details of the mission…but if the mission meant he’d be forced to be away from Wanda and Azalea for a long time…he didn’t know if he’d be willing to take it on.
His girls meant everything to him…meant more to him than life itself.
Azalea pulled away from the hug and smiled brightly. “I’m hungry, Daddy. Can we make PB&J’s? Can we, Daddy?”
“How could I say no to that?” Steve stood; he lifted Azalea into his arms. “Let’s go make those sandwiches.”
Azalea giggled. “I love you, Daddy…”
Steve smiled and bent his head down. His nose touched his daughter’s. “…I love you so much more.”

it was so sweet!!!!!!!!!!!! Steve and Wanda are so sweet even when they argue, and Azalea is so cute!!!!!

Wanda closed the door with her foot, carrying a small load of groceries, along with the dress she had purchased to replace her old dress that was torn and faded.
“Here, let me help with that.”
Wanda smiled gently and handed a couple of the bags off to Steve. “Thank you.”
“No problem.”
Wanda followed Steve into the kitchen, setting down the bags on the counter, and Steve did the same.
“Mama, we made PB&J’s!” Azalea cried, eating at the table, peanut butter and jam on her round, slightly chubby face.
Wanda laughed. “I can see that.”
“We had fun, Mama!”
Wanda laughed again.
It felt good to laugh.
“I see that. Did Daddy make the biggest mess?” She played.
Without even a minute to pause, Azalea nodded. “Uh huh!”
Steve chuckled. “Yeah…okay.” He shook his head.
Wanda smiled and put up the few cold groceries. “Maybe we should have a treat this evening…”
Azalea’s eyes widened. “What treat, Mama!? What treat!?”
Steve raised an eyebrow, obviously just as confused and curious as Azalea.
Wanda smiled. “How about we have a fun family night? We haven’t had one of those in forever…we can do something fun, whatever you want, Azalea…if Daddy is okay with it.”
Steve smiled and nodded. “Of course. What do you want to do, Azalea?”
Azalea smiled and tapped her chin, copying what Wanda did so often. “Let me think…”
“That was one bad throw.” Wanda teased, just as Steve sat in the chair across from her at the bowling alley.
Steve scoffed and took a sip of his soda. “Yeah, yeah…a bowling ball is a lot different than a vibranium shield.”
Wanda chuckled.
Azalea loved bowling, even if she wasn’t the best at it, and had decided that was what she wanted to do…and it worked out, since there was also food.
Azalea went up to bowl, and Wanda cheered her on before turning her attention back to her husband, who was watching her. Wanda smiled. “What are you looking at?”
“Your beautiful face. Wanda, I wanted to say-“
“Steve, shh…you already apologized. I’ve forgiven you…fights happen. I know you didn’t mean to yell, and I’ve forgiven you…please, stop feeling guilty about it.”
Steve slowly nodded, laying his hand on the table. “I just don’t want anything to come between us.”
Wanda laid her hand overtop of his. “…Nothing can ever come between us, you know that…not even the past.”
Steve turned his hand over to instead squeeze her hand and hold it in his own. “Nothing at all could ever make me stop loving you.”
“Exactly…especially not words spoken in haste…and I’m sorry too, Steve…I know that my words hurt you. I shouldn’t have even read your mind…”
“But I understand why you did it, Wanda…I know all the things that have happened have broken your trust…I guess I just thought I had already gotten it.”
Wanda smiled gently; she squeezed his hand tighter. “I’d trust you with my life, Steve.”
His blue eyes met hers. Wanda nodded. “With my life.”
Steve leaned towards her, and she to him. Their lips met.
“Mama, Daddy, I got a strike!”
Wanda pulled away from Steve with a small apologetic smile, cheered, stood, and lifted Azalea into her arms, holding her tight. “I knew you could do it, baby!”
Steve walked over, his arms wrapping around them both. “You certainly beat me, Azalea.”
Wanda chuckled. “That’s for sure. Come on, let’s return our bowling things, grab our things, and let’s go get some ice cream to finish off this night.”
Azalea cheered.
They quickly did all of the things they needed to do: returning the bowling balls and shoes, grabbing their drinks, and heading out the door.
They walked out into the faint, crisp Spring breeze, walking hand in hand, Azalea in the middle of Wanda and Steve, giggling as they lifted her up into the air.
There was still pain…still grief…but there was nothing else Wanda would ever want in life more than her husband and daughter.
Nothing.
