That’s now 10 snowballs I have to write…sorry, everybody, I’ve not caught up on them! I’m working on that…

      @hybridlore

Sorry…I didn’t get to work on Dale’s story last night! I got highly distracted by reading Space Boy (a webtoon). I really got sucked into it! Not the best thing. I may be able to work on the story tonight. If not tonight, then perhaps tomorrow. Thanks for being patient!

I am finally writing up on your snowballs to me. (well, this is 1 of hybrid’s balls) I still have 6 more to go!!!!

Without any further delay…here’s the next installment to the Kingdom Pen story!

It was laughter! And it was coming from…Dale stared ahead, across the marble flooring, past flights of stairs, and straight to another pair of doors. Two white doors.

The laughter was coming from behind the doors! He hastily stepped onto the marble floor, shooting a quick glance around himself as he moved forward.

To the left and right loomed two arching staircases. They curled up and ended up on a second floor above him.

The warm light came from the crystal skylight ceiling. Faint sunbeams shot through the clear rooftop. On either side of the doors, the walls were of clear glass which shone plenty of light inside, but its surface was roughened so that one could not see outside. They curved to the left and right, leading down into more hallways.

Dale peered at the walls before him From what he could see, the outside of the walls looked pure white.

As he approached the white doors, the laughter became more distinct. And louder.

They sound like they are having a lot of fun. Whoever they are.

He finally reached the doors. With a deep breath, Dale took hold of the door’s left handle and turned. A brilliant white slowly filled his vision.

I am finally going to find out what this place is.

He stepped forward, eyes wide open.

The door closed behind him with a soft thud. Dale blinked.

        What in the—

Ha lol I totally forgot about this and now I’ve been snowballed again, so it looks like I’m at 200 words… fortunately for me, I did just write more than 200 words, so it looks like I can start throwing my snowballs! I’d share what I wrote, but it’s part of a random scene in a story and probably would not make sense without more of the story, soooo maybe next time.

OK. There won’t be as many more scenes from this story that I’ll share, but here you go. Its 95o words should render me free from all residual snowball debts I owe.

                        Tada…………..

She laughed as she dusted her hands free of crumbs.

From the sounds coming from the nearby cotes, the other shepherds were leading their flocks out. One, an older man with eyes so light they were almost as white as his hair and beard, stopped by their fire. He greeted Aiche with a bow.

“Good morning, sir. Do you need me to take your flock with mine?”

“No, Ablard.” Aiche squinted at the sun cresting the hill. “I’ll take them out again in an hour.”

The older man nodded, and with a bow in Elline’s direction, walked on until even his voice had disappeared down the hill. Aiche smiled after him.

“That is a good man. Come, my dove. Though the king’s shepherds are good fellows, you don’t need to stay here long.”

He cut his eyes toward where Mogartha’s castle cut a black silhouette against the rising sun. Elline winced. She felt phantom hands of terror sliding up her neck as last evening flew through her head. The flash of scissors. Her aunt’s face twisted with hatred. Shadows in the wood.

                        “Ellie luv. My dove.”

His fingers brushed against her cheek. She started, clinging to what was left of her braid.

“It’s all right, luv.” He leaned back against the fold wall, relaxed but for a flash of something hot in his eyes. “You won’t be near that lady any more. The king will have something to say about all this.”

                        “The king!”

“Ay, luv. Come let me show you our apple tree. You can see the road from there.”

The path he took twisted between the sheep folds. Remnants of frost clung to the shadows of the higher walls. The stones were uncut and set more for strength than beauty. When the walls were lower, she reached out to touch the jagged glass pressed along the top. Whatever thieves or predators were foolish enough to come into the shepherd’s camp would never reach the sheep inside.

Then the space beside the path widened and cleared completely into a final open stretch beside the road. An apple tree stood there, twisted with age and countless storms. Aiche led her into its shade.

“We keep most of the creatures away so the fellows’ wives can harvest however much they can manage. It is good to have a fresh one now and again though. I put some in your bag.” He patted a haversack leaning against the tree’s base. It took her a moment to realize it was his own bag he used when out in the field. She frowned.

“Aiche. I can’t just take your things. You will need it. I can use a market wallet or something.”

He simply smiled and rocked back on his heels, his hands clasped behind his back. It hardly bared mentioning that she didn’t have a market wallet, or that she didn’t have much to buy one with. She sighed and took the bag.

“The king will take your side in the case. There is no question on that. And even if he is not at his palace, you will be safe there.” He checked the straps on the bag as he talked. ”The king’s Spring Palace is forty-eight leagues from here. That is roughly a week’s travel, luv. A long way to take alone, and I would not have you take it on any other road. But the King’s highway is different. We use it often.”

He drew something thick and wooly from her bag and shook it out. It ruffled out into a warm blue cloak. She smiled as he draped it around her. The cloak fit her perfectly, just the right breadth and length to protect her without hindering her movements. It made tears well up in her eyes. Every word he had spoken in the last half-hour had felt as though it was the fruit of many hour’s planning. Perhaps many days. He was always protecting her.

Now he smiled back at her with a worried crease in his forehead.

“Thank you.” She caught his hand. He squeezed it tight.

                        “Always, Doveling. I love you.”

                        “You… what?”

He laughed. Drew her close. She could smell sheep on his mantle and something else much sweeter, like myrrh or spikenard. He kissed her forehead.

“Wait for me, my dove. Will you?”

It was more than the comfort of his embrace or even his words, sweet as they were. Tears ran down her cheeks. She hid her face in his mantle.

                        “I will.”

He drew her hood over her head but didn’t step away. She was shaking too much to stand on her own. He began to hum, then sing softly in her ear. It was an old folk tune light as the hands that smoothed the shoulders of her cloak.

“My beloved spake, and said to me,

Rise up, my love, my fair one, and come away.

For, lo, the winter is past, the rain is over and gone…”

His voice faded away and he turned her toward the road.

“Be careful, luv. Stay on the road. The king’s guard watches it day and night.”

Elline nodded. The gravelly dirt crunched under her boots. She walked down the road until it curved around a bend. The wood loomed ahead, becoming stranger with every step she took toward it. She hesitated.

Aiche was still standing on the rise beside the apple tree. Even from the threshold of the forest she could see the confidence etched into his form. It was in the tilt of his head and the way his hand rested within reach of his blade. So many things. She lifted a hand.

                        He waved back. A promise.

                        I’ll come for you.
