Ok, I’m not suggesting you do this. But i only have one WIP atm, so I’m starting another one for the new year! It’s a choose your own adventure, and I’m super excited about it. Here’s the ending if you fail, not sure why I wrote this first.
Basically you are a prince sent on a quest to warn your sister who is staying in a another land that it isn’t safe anymore. The land she is staying in is overrun with spies, and will be seized soon. If you can get her out soon, you avoid war with the country. If you take too long, she will be captured along with the other residents and your country will have to go to war to get her back. So I’ve got a lot of technical stuff to figure out, some decisions need to have the same outcome so I don’t have to write too many different ones. This is just one ending you could get.
I’m going with Kelsley Whittaker for the mc’s name, he’s 16.
You get up suddenly, noticing the cold stone floor biting through your clothing. A cool damp air blows across your face from above. Glancing around your location, you regain your bearings. You’ve failed. The prison bars around you show the results of your decisions. Looking towards the floor, you remember the tumultuous path you went through, only to end up here. Was it all lost? You look over towards the cell next to you.
“Hello?” You flinch as your voice echoes back to you.
A small figure in the corner near you stirs.
“Kelsley?” Your sister’s bright blue eyes contrast with the dirt on her face and dress.
You cringe at her outward appearance, pulling your knees up towards your chest. Your beloved sister, in a prison. All because you didn’t reach her in time. You avoid her gaze as she moves towards the bars separating the two cells. The things she must be thinking about you rack your brain. It was you who failed her.
“Hey!” She smiles, reaching through the bars. Tears brim in her eyes. ”Missed you.”
You look up, nearly shocked by the compassion in her eyes. You scoot towards the bars next to her. What do you even say? You’re too guilt struck to speak; tears would have choked your words had you tried anyways. You lean against the bars, reaching an arm through to hug your sister.
“Missed you too.” Tears roll down your cheek. “I’m so sorry.”
You gasp for air through your sobbing, wiping your sleeve across your face.
“What more could you have done? I know you got here as fast as you could.”
“I could have…” You hesitate, catching your breath. “I don’t know? I made bad decisions.”
“Well, so did I. I s-shouldn’t have trusted the people h-here in the first place.” She says, nearly tripping on her words.
“I’m just glad we’re together.” Her kind eyes meet yours, and you smile.
All is not lost, but the failures of the both of you come at a cost. War is upon your country.
Are any of you trying something new in your writing for the new year?

January 1, 2023 at 6:05 pm #127218Cool idea! I like that, good job! I’m excited to see what you do! Do you have ideas for a title yet?
I’m going to concentrate on finishing Swallowtail Summer this year, I think I can do it! I don’t want to set super high goals for myself so I don’t get overwhelmed. But I might start a his-fic short story with my sister, if we’re both up for it! And last night I wrote the opening scene of a sequel to A Dream Come True just for fun. We’ll see, that might end up being a 2024 project!
Be brave. Be strong. Be bold.
-Christopher BlakewellJanuary 1, 2023 at 6:07 pm #127220Thanks! We’ll see what happens with it. I like having multiple project to switch between, but finishing a older one is great! Oh exciting, starting a sequel? That’s a big step!
And yeah I don’t have a title yet XD

January 1, 2023 at 6:14 pm #127222So, my grandparents visited recently and my grandpa told me about a guy who goes to his Bible study. This man is a little mentally ill and right now he is being taken care of by the government financially. After his parents passed away, this man inherited a huge estate and millions of dollars. Unfortunately, some of his relatives tricked him into signing papers….consequently, he signed all his inheritance away. It’s super sad. 🙁 My new WIP for this year is to write a story about this man….but it’s going to be a story of triumph with some fantasy….like, he meets a woman in a forest who gives him the ability to turn into a lion and in that form, he can do a lot more things. It’s going to be a happy ending story. When I heard about his story, I couldn’t believe that would actually happen…it sounded like something out of a novel. I’m going to write this story so that other people can be encouraged and strengthened even though they have been mistreated…everyone has an inner lion that needs to be awakened.

January 1, 2023 at 8:47 pm #127270I love choose your own adventure books. From my experience with that type of thing I would recommend using a flow chart so that you can have a visual representation of all the paths your story can take.
Im starting two new WIPs this year. The first which I think I briefly mentioned before is a steampunk Lovecraftian mystery/adventure It is currently set two follow 4 main storylines.
- Steven Alearn – a student at the university who discoverers a mysterious book that leads him on a quest to stop the dreamworld and his world from merging
- Juletta Wealder – after the suicide of fellow University student Willow Zhalin, Julieta begins to suspect that Willow is still alive and begins her own investigation into what truly happened.
- Willow Zhallin – Willow wakes up in a strange world with no recollection of how she got there or where she is.
- Inspector Gearscape – a mysterious personal investigator hiding from his past
I will make a WIP forum soon with more explanation. Also I am working on a solo card game about a group of survivors who survive a plane crash in Alaska and must reach civilisation before they are killed in the approaching blizzard or worse. (It’s kind of like Oregon Trail but on steroids)
January 1, 2023 at 8:54 pm #127273Great idea! I should try a flow chart.
Your WIP sounds interesting! And the game too. I’ve never designed a game, but it sounds like fun. I like your name selection for the book too!

ThanksJanuary 2, 2023 at 1:40 am #127308@mineralizedwritings that’s pretty cool!
So no “new” WIPs this year as of rn, just my series I’ve been working on lol!
Tho I’m considering major book hopping to book four cuz I’m just so excited about it.
Also this years gonna be filled with a lot of Kingdom/God focused stuff so Writing will need to be a secondary compared to that, but still hoping to finish maybe something this year? XD we shall see. If not oh well.
I am really wanting to book hop to book four tho….
And I think I’m going to… XD XD….
it’s just hard cuz u have that part of ur brain screaming “NOOO U CAN’T U MONSTER U DON’T EVEN HAVE THE FIRST BOOK DONE”
XD
and I’m like
“but PAXTOOOON 😭” XD

Oh yes… BUT PAXTON!! 😂😥 I totally get that. I like to write whatever I want from any place in any book, then have a draft going on the side. I put stuff in the draft if I’m sure I want it to happen and when I want it to happen, but If I’m not sure, I write it separately. I like doing that because later I can look back through all the word docs and see what I used to think a later apart of my book would contain, and how it’s changed. Nothing wrong with book hoping, and that’s a very viable reason to do so!!- This reply was modified 1 year, 11 months ago by MineralizedWritings.

@mineralizedwritings. Your new WIP sounds so cool! 😀
So…my main focus for this year, and it’s one of my goals for 2023, is to finish my first draft of Freedom’s Fire. For me, it’s still a pretty big goal. xD
HOWEVER…there is a new WIP that came to mind not too long ago…and I really love the idea of it…XD It’s main message(s) will likely be Hope/Identity, however, it’s still another his-fic novel, so not too different…other than, well, I’m doing it in a time period I’ve never written about! Victorian England.
I should talk about it in the WIP rant chat…come to think of it… 😉

Thanks!
Victorian England? Thats cool! And identity is a favorite theme of mine. Have any charries for it yet?

@mineralizedwritings. You’re Very Welcome!
Yeah, it’s a pretty cool time period! (I think me reading a book all about Charles Dickens inspired the WIP, lol. XD) Identity is a great theme! I can see why it’d be one of your favorites! 😉 And yes, I do have 2 main charries and already quite a few side charries. I posted about the MC’s in the WIP rant forum. 😀
January 2, 2023 at 4:31 pm #127355I love your character’s name, @mineralizedwritings 😍
I’ve been working on a new WIP since Christmas. I have several projects that I try to seriously focus on, but I found my old notebook, and decided to rewrite the tangled mess that used to be my dream book. That’s where the Phoenix Kid is from, btw.
Kinda Arabian Nights vibes, but not. The theme is greed, and how obsession can take over your life – but it’s countered by great role models, description of food, and a healthy amount of bromance 😉
