I was interesting in Tale of Despareaux for the world building involving the government. I love tyrannical Government books, and my next story might have characters getting thrown into a pit if they don’t follow the rules. (just kidding…… maybe) but beyond that I didn’t really love the story. It was interesting though. That’s all I’ve read/watched of her stuff.

Oh they are very good! You like stories with animal protagonists, right? (I think.) Despareaux is right up that story lane.

That’s okay. Some people like soup-loving searats, others don’t. Are you not as much of a fantasy reader? I ask that because most people on here are, and although I know you like LotR, I’m just curious.

@ellette-giselle @whalekeeper Uncharacteristically for me, I liked the movie better than the book

That and Mary Poppins are the only movies I liked better than the book

I think I can say I have more fondness for the movie, even if the book is the correct source of reference in my mind. Mary Poppins is kind of the same, too.

That’s me with War Horse. The book was told from the horse’s perspective and was very confusing and somewhat uninteresting because the horse sometimes had horse limitation and sometimes could think like a person. But the movie was amazing because you can see everything the horse is seeing.

I do like some fantasy. But not a lot. Partly because a lot of it is dirty and part because a lot of it has strange creatures. That leaves me with a slim amount of fantasy. XD

Oh, you’re not interested in strange creatures? Not even an Oiple?

At least a lot of middle grade fantasy isn’t dirty, and you can find a lot of fairy-tale-like stories. I think I’m always curious to find those stories for a younger audience which are for adults too, because they end up being the most subtle. What kind of stuff did you read when you were younger?

My siblings and I listened to an audiobook of The Tale of Despereaux several years ago. Never watched the movie though. I liked it—although it has been fuel for my dislike of the word soup. I loved the rats. 🤭 We were going to make our dolls (or Legos, I can’t remember) act it out once… that was fun to imagine though we never followed through, lol.

The only other Kate DiCamillo book I know for sure I’ve read is Because of Winn-Dixie.

I read Narnia, but other then that I read mostly fiction set in our world or a fantasy world that was basically earth alternate reality with no weird creatures just a bunch of artistic liberty.

*Thinks up other examples of artistic liberty in fantasy* Powers? Medieval quests? What kind of fantastical elements are you more interested in?

I really liked it for its themes. If I read Winn-Dixie and didn’t pick up on them, I would probably feel the same way, because otherwise it does feel like a bunch of random events. But the contrast between Opal and the preacher is the real center theme, showing why a willingness to connect is so important, and the rest of the book pieces together from there. That’s why I like it.

I love soup in real life—awh, chicken noodle is one of my all-time favorite things to eat—but the word is just…. Sooooup? Ew. lol I just can’t with how it sounds.
