Oh, and then you’ll have to figure out what the gods represent, and then you’ll have to have a basic mythology, and then there’s the question of how they teach this mythology….
And THEN you’ll have parents wondering if they should be letting their teens read this book because it was supposed to be Christian but there’s this weird religious system?!?

Yep.
I do have a rough mythology as much as I want to have it. The god of war and his consort the goddess of prosperity run around doing their thing while the god of the yurt (home/tent) tries to just keep the tents from burning in the chaos. I have decided not to go too in depth, since I don’t want to pull the darker sides of false religion into he book. Other than the whole “war is worship” thing of course. And the fact that A_____’s captor is a bit of an infidel because he has spurned most of the religion for a form of stoicism. His wife is devout though, and it’s sad.

January 18, 2025 at 11:06 pm #195257I’m always so impressed when somebody invents a language for their story. I’m too traumatized from Latin to have any sort of desire to that end.
It saved the world from becoming a huge political allegory
LEGIT concern right there. Actually so true.
Hm… Maybe you can create some kind of explanation for the fall of the Dorwainish language, like how Gaelic became a threatened language.
god of the yurt (home/tent)
I read that as ‘god of the yogurt.’ 🤦♀️
XD
Well, the weird religious systems are part of the fun, as long as they make sense for the world and it’s not like you’re trying to insert subliminal messaging into your novel.

January 18, 2025 at 11:13 pm #195260And you never really know how many categories world building falls into. There’s just so many different things. I know I keep saying this, but it’s crazy. Just the fact that one of my protagonists is biracial brings up so many questions that have to be answered so I can sleep at night.

XD
I suppose they are. *Nods sagely*
The evil/weird religious system in my WIP so far only has moon worship and possibly vague ancestor stuff…which is being an issue because of blurred lines between calendars and idolatry, but I’m actually having fun with that so far so let’s hope I don’t end up with mad parents.

This stuff keeps you up too? XD
And oh. There’s so much. “World-building” is almost a deceivingly simple word. We’re literally making up worlds. This is micro-fictional-creation.

I think it makes sense. There was a lot of moon worship in the ancient times, at least partially because of how consistent it was in people’s lives, and I for one think it’s fascinating. Some of the culture in my story uses the moon as a symbol for a particular kind of philosophy, since they’re reverting back to the ignorance of ancient times.

😭 It’s keeping me up right now. No like actually, I should be asleep.

January 19, 2025 at 2:06 pm #195341This topic is what I need! What is Google Site? How do you use it for worldbuilding?
I’m currently working on building my wip world…and it is mixed with a lot of cultures! Let me name a few: so far, my world is a mix of Old Testament Israel, King Alfred age England, King Alfred aged vikings, Scottish doons, Roman Empire days, and typical knights era.
So, yes, that’s a lot of things mixed! I’m totally new about building worlds…I know the first thing I should do is research. TONS of it.
Any thoughts or tips…whatever…I’d appreciate it!

January 19, 2025 at 2:35 pm #195360I use Reedsy, I’d highly recommend. It’s completely free and very easy to organize random ideas, all in one place!
It’s changed my writing journey, and it’s made my life SO. MUCH. EASIER!!!!
Idk, I just think of random ideas for my world, and then write it down. I don’t go too much in depth, but I do enjoy creating fantasy maps and things…I just do it for fun. I know some writers go crazy with worldbuilding, but that way seems too much like a chore. I only worldbuild what I feel like doing, and when I feel like doing it. It’s supposed to be fun (In my opinion) so I try to make it fun!
I don’t worry about if things make sense or not, because I write for my sanity, and if I don’t like it or enjoy it, it defeats the whole purpose.
My advice would be to just do whatever you want, and HAVE FUN!

January 19, 2025 at 10:37 pm #195392Hm, is world building how the world around is made? For my current WIP I made it where there is this group of islands separate from the world, and has no contact to the outside world, the main reason this is, is because they do not wish to get involved with the outside world’s wars that are going on. They only have wars between each other. And on these islands are humans, and people that are half animal and half human.
They are humans, but with animal parts and abilities. But that is just the tip of the iceberg.

January 19, 2025 at 10:40 pm #195393@the_lost-journal Worldbuilding means everything that’s not plot or characters. So the world itself, the creatures and other living things that exist in it, their society, everything.
