October 18, 2021 at 9:16 pm #106335So, I’m trying to be brave enough to ask something on here. But before I do let me clarify; I do not think of myself as anything like a musician! I simply enjoy music, and wish to glorify God in any endeavors I make.
Now for my question:
I am teaching myself violin, and am struggling with my bowing. I can’t get a smooth transition between notes, and something keeps squeaking/scraping. Is this a problem, or just practice? I can read music, and have a good instrument.
I want to learn Jewish fiddle/violin but am working with hymns for now.
Please feel free to post any other tips you my have. I (definitely) need all the help I can get.

Oof, sorry I’m so late! What size violin do you have?
October 19, 2021 at 9:17 pm #106421Off of my basic knowledge, I would guess the amount of rosin, or bow pressure, but I’m asking my viola friend rn just in case 🙂
October 19, 2021 at 9:28 pm #106422Hi, and thank you!
I don’t believe it’s a full size orchestra violin, but it is large to be a student. I am small myself, and only just fitting it right although I’ve had it since I was seven. My grandfather plays, and he gave me it. This year he replaced the strings with new nylon steel ones. However I only get to see him like twice a year, so…
The rosin I have is old, so that may be the problem.
Thank you again, and if you know any tips, I would be a grateful recipitant. =)

Fork the GorkOctober 20, 2021 at 10:44 am #106475He said it was unlikely the problem was the age of you rosin, it’s possible it would mess up your playing if it is bad rosin(I’m not 100% sure what that means)
Have you gotten your bow redhaired recently?October 20, 2021 at 11:06 am #106480That makes sense. My rosin is 9 years old, so yeah, it’s pretty dry.
No, my bow had never been been rehaired, but I haven’t actually played untill this year. Then again, the damage even a careful 7 year old my have doomed it.
Thank you so much for answers. I was beginning to think something was desperately wrong with my bowing.

Fork the GorkOctober 20, 2021 at 11:25 am #106482Np! I’ll tell my friend you said thanks 😉
Lol, I’m sure you were a delightful 7-year-old.
Also, I wasn’t excepting this, he said to get the bow redhaired every 12-18 months.
October 20, 2021 at 11:29 am #106483Oh, yeah, if you need a funny violin youtube channel to watch, I will cautiously suggest TwoSet Violin, as in a couple of their videos, they have some profanity D:
October 20, 2021 at 11:32 am #106484I thought I was! =) Now that I deal with such delightful 7 year olds at church…
Every 12-18 months? Ok, I should be able to accommodate that.

Fork the GorkOctober 20, 2021 at 11:34 am #106485October 20, 2021 at 11:38 am #106486XD oh no…
I was helping with a kindergarten class at my church for a week, and we were talking about things that we used to like but now we don’t (as a way to illustrate a lesson abt transformation in Christ) and one of the little girls raised her hand and said very boldly and sincerely, “My baby brother.”
I was dying.
October 20, 2021 at 11:43 am #106487Also, this is what he said:
“Np, if that doesn’t fix the problem, then it might have to do with her technique. However, smooth bow changes are very difficult, it takes a lifetime of practice to truly master it.”
