Reuben and Hope had gone with Dr. Elisha, and the rest of them were waiting in the waiting room.
Almarrin was leaned against the wall, obviously…thinking.
Leo knew what that felt like…being lost in thought.
He’d gotten a text from Joshua, saying what the plan was, and he was good with it. Truthfully, what he needed right now was for Hope to be okay.
And food again, before too long.
He glanced at the clock up on the wall again.
Thank goodness there weren’t many people here…he didn’t know if Hope, or even Reuben, for that matter, could have waited very long.
He glanced over at Wolfgang, to find him asleep.
He must have been exhausted.
All that school…then the club…now this.
Wolfgang slept with his head in Dietrich’s lap, as Dietrich’s fingers slowly coursed through his brown locks.
Dietrich noticed Leo and slowly looked up.
Leo walked over, sitting on the arm of the chair. “…Why did you ever do it, Dietrich…? You’ve never been as bad as Adolphus, but…”
“…I was afraid. I didn’t want another beating, you know? And bullying you guys…acting like I didn’t care…it made me escape it. I never should have been a coward…but I was.”
Leo slowly nodded.
He actually understood that. “Hey…it’s scary…always is. Now I can’t stop Adolphus…else…well…Wolfgang or one of the others could get the punishment…that’s what Frida said…”
Dietrich’s eyes widened, and his gaze fell back to Wolfgang, who was still sleeping, his head still in Dietrich’s lap. “What!? That…that’s…”
Leo slowly nodded. “But that’s why I didn’t do anything today…I couldn’t…and Adolphus knew it, too. He made me watch as you choked Jakob…because I couldn’t do anything…”
“I-I’m sorry about that…I need to apologize to Jakob about that…think he’ll forgive me?”
Leo shrugged. “I guess you’ll never know before you try…” he bit his lip, “but knowing Jakob…I don’t know if he will.”
Dietrich nodded and smiled faintly. “I don’t deserve it anyways.”
Silence ensued.
“…Leo?”
“Yeah?”
“…After all of this, I feel like such a coward…but more than that…a failure.”
“I know what that feels like.” Leo replied softly.
“Leo, come on. What have you failed at as bad as I have?”
Leo’s hand rested on Wolfgang’s head. “Failing them…my brothers…not being able to protect them the way I should…I failed them…I’m a failure for failing my brothers…”
“Leo…”
Leo turned away, the guilt piercing his heart. “…Such a failure…”
“Leo, hey, will you look at me?”
Leo shook his head.
“Alright then…but I can still talk to you. I’ve watched you do everything you can to protect your brothers. Yeah, you’ve all been hurt. But you’re still a kid. There’s only so much you can do. But what you have done, you’ve done it for them…and you’ve protected them as much as you possibly can. You have not failed your brothers.”
Leo slowly turned back around to face Dietrich, tears already coursing down his cheeks, so much so that he couldn’t talk.
“…You have not failed your brothers. You are not a failure, Leo.” Dietrich’s fingers wiped away Leo’s tears. “And no matter what happens, I’m here now too. That is…if you’re okay with me staying around.”
Leo slowly nodded. “I do want you to.”
Dietrich smiled and pulled Leo into his embrace. “Good, because I want to be here for you.”
(Y’ALLL, HE WAS A SECRET SWEETIE THE ENTIRE TIME!!!! Y’ALLLLLLLLL!!!!! *SOBS and hugs Dietrich tight*)

@godlyfantasy12. Yeah, he did. XD It will probably be a little slower in the book, but for this I wanted it sped up a bit, lol. xD But also, I think he had all of it inside of him the whole time, so I’m gonna work on showing those bits and pieces in my actual book that there truly is a very good man who actually loves his stepbrothers under the mask he wears. 😉
And yeah…I’m not sure what Adolphus will do yet…heh…Also, this is just me, and I’m not worried about it (actually I like it because it’s an AU so it’s going to happen 😂) but in the actual book I’d definitely make sure to not make it a full 180 turn like this, but make it gradual acceptance and such, just to make it more realistic, if that makes sense.
like in my series, Paxton doesn’t fully accept Soren, until later and then…well, Paxton’s never sure if his brother knew he forgave him or not (due to his death) 🥺
but in the AU it’s fine and I like it 😂 just wanted to offer that advice 😂

@godlyfantasy12. Yeah, I know what you mean. 😉 I’m not planning on it being COMPLETE 180, bc he has hurt his brothers, and there’s still a lot of healing that needs to take place that won’t completely be able to be explored in the books. 🙂
But then again…there’s also another plan that’s brewing in my head…but it’s one spoiler I’m not sure of yet, and if I do decide to use it…it’s one I wanna keep secret. XD- Rank: Chosen One

“Yeah, out in the country.” Ezra explained. “Whole reason my parents gave me a truck, so I could still get to school because I live too far away. I live out towards the west side of the town. And what do we like to do other than this? Well…we both just like to hang out around town…go to some arcades, Eva likes to go shopping, and we just kinda hang out. Guess there isn’t really too much that’s exciting I like to do.” He laughed. “I’m always doing school or farm work, so most days I don’t really have too much free time, honestly.”
“Hey, farm work sounds like fun.” Omega’s wings flicked excitedly. [trust me, girl, sometimes it is and sometimes it’s not…lol*]
Hunter’s phone chimed suddenly (yeah, he has one). He took it out of his pocket and held it up. “Hey, uh…Omega? Echo’s asking where we are.” He looked over to his new friends. “Sorry about that. My brother wants me to call him.” He pushed his seat away from the table as he dialed the number.
A few minutes later he came back. “I guess we have to leave, there’s something we have to do at home…..”He looked over to Eva and Ezra. “I’m sorry it’s on such short notice.”
“Not a problem.” Ezra reassured him. “Do you want me to drive you there or will you fly?”
“Probably fly. I don’t want to take up too much of your time.” Hunter held the door open for his sister. “But do you think we can meet up tomorrow?”

Hope leaned back in the hospital bed…thinking. Wishing that the pain would go away. It didn’t. Her arm throbbed, her mind reeled. It hurt. Everything hurt.
She closed her eyes, ignoring the fact that Rueben was staring at her.
Dark…cold and dark, alone. Cold…
“E…excuse me?” Her voice stuttered.
The nurse spun around, “Yes, sweetheart?”
Her teeth chattered, “Col…cold.”
“Oh! Honey!” The nurse gathered a blanket and placed it on Hope. She could hear them mumbling. About her.
Rueben…
She forced her eyes open…he was still here…she had to tell him.
“Rue…Rueben.”
He immediately sat straiter, “Hope? What is it?”
“Pen…paper.”
Rueben nodded, grabbing something from his backpack on the floor and stuffing the paper and pen in her hands.
Quickly she wrote it down: I have no home to go to. I lied. I don’t have a home. I don’t have anyone. I’m alone. I live in the old depleted house on 2nd street…I’m sorry…- Rank: Loyal Sidekick

The trees whispered in a soft breeze. He brushed a leaf from his silver-gold hair then paused, watching it drift slowly to the ground before moving on. The sunlight flickered merrily around, and here among the branches he felt like dancing. The wood beneath his feet hardly creaked at his light step.
“Hey kid! What are you doing?!”
Inglor frowned slightly at the interruption, turning to find a man below him.
“Walking home, sir.”
The man’s cheeks puffed out and his face turned red. “On top of a plank fence?”
“What of it?” Inglor shrugged, absently tracing the leaf pattern around his shirt collar.
“Are you crazy? It’s eight feet to the ground!”
“Is the fence yours? I promise I won’t hurt it.”
The man humphed and changed color. “Well, no. But kid, you’re going to hurt yourself! Come down from there.”
“I’m sorry sir, but I don’t really want to, and I don’t see why I should. Good day.” Inglor laughed and danced back a few steps, then away along the top of the fence, enjoying the wind in the trees.
