Leo
Another sigh chuffed out. He set down the mayonnaise knife and turned around.
“Rory, Dante was attempting to make a joke. The tea is yours. I know this is hard– I went through something like it myself though I was a good deal more rebellious– but you’re not in the military anymore.” He turned his attention to the couch boy. “Dante, I appreciate humor. I also appreciate staying sane. Do you know how hard that is right now?”
A cup of tea is cheaper than therapy.
January 21, 2026 at 2:08 pm #210051Oh boy. Lol. The burn in that last line! XD
Rory
He gave Leo a grateful look and carefully picked up the tea cup, taking an explorative sip. The drink was new and interesting. He swallowed and licked the edge of his lips. He tried another taste.

Dante hid the lower half of his face with his tea mug and shrank slightly under Leo’s gaze. He didn’t want to offend the guy who was kind enough to feed him. Plus, he was school staff. He had to power to kick Dante back out onto the street.
“Very hard, I’m guessing,” he muttered. “Sorry. Humor is how I stay sane.”⭐️World's Slowest Writer⭐️
January 21, 2026 at 2:25 pm #210056Ummm. Okay.
Leo
He studied the kid a moment, then grinned and turned back to finishing the extra sandwiches.
“Me too, actually.” He screwed the lid back on the mayonnaise jar. “Here’s your sandwich…Which I’m assuming you don’t want to get up for considering the amount of human ketchup you’ve leaked.”
Leo set the plate down on the table.

Rory
He looked up at leo, the expression on his face making him look very young. “I found him, he was hurt, and I took him to the hospital because he said they wouldn’t hurt him. And then we had to escape from the hospital. I couldn’t find you,” he added worriedly.

The phrase “human ketchup” kept repeating in Dante’s mind. He looked down at his wound with a confused expression. “I’m… not human though.”

Heeeyyy, don’t look at me like that
I just had very saucy tomato and cheese pizza, and I’m still hungry, so it was the first thing on my mind. So there
I am out of signature ideas
January 21, 2026 at 2:51 pm #210068January 21, 2026 at 2:52 pm #210069Sorry. I seen to be good at that.
Leo
He glanced from one boy to the other, then slowly sat down on his filing cabinet.
“Erm, well, Dante, I guess your more human than a tomato. Didn’t really want to assume anything and all that.” He shrugged. Looked back at Rory. At the strain, reflected panic in the kid’s eyes. His shoulders slumped a fraction of an inch. “I’m sorry kid. I was under the school reworking their plumbing.”
Not with duct tape with time. Who knew the inspector could blow a fuse that quick…not like it hadn’t worked just fine.
“Remind me to get you a com clip. But, taking him to the hospital was a good thing. The doctors here are good–they won’t hurt you. But, eh, why’d you have to escape the hospital?”

“Don’t have money.” Dante shrugged. That wasn’t the only reason, but he didn’t feel the need to explain himself.

Hmm. Doctor bills definitely weren’t small things. He nodded. Sipped his tea.
Both boys were eating far slower this time round. That fathomless pit of a teenage stomach must be getting as full as it ever got. Good. They didn’t have enough ham for another round, and he wasn’t sure what else was edible in the fridge.
Definitely needed to clean that out. Former mechanics had left all sorts of… presently undefinable items behind. The ghosts of lunches past.
