“Just…” He began to say he just needed rest, but the exhaustion hit him so hard, he didn’t even finish the sentence. He hated sleeping when there were other people around, but he had no choice in the matter. His willpower was spent. He instantly sank into a deep sleep.
Images and conversations flickered in Dante’s mind. With a wave of his hand, he dismissed every one of them as they came, and they disappeared, like whiffs of smoke. He was like an orchestra conductor, willing it all away with a simple gesture. But the images and sounds started to come quicker. They flooded in and he couldn’t push each one away fast enough. He tried to run. They grew tall and spread fast like a wildfire. He was drowning and the air was clogged with smoke.
“Wait! I didn’t mean-” His own voice startled him awake.
The room was darker now than he remembered. His eye darted around trying to adjust, while his breaths came quickly and frantically. He tried blinking away his confusion and calming himself down. How long had he been asleep?

He lifted his head from where he sat in a dark corner. “Nightmares? You haven’t been trained to suppress them, have you.” his statement was matter-of-fact, no condescension. Just the truth.

Dante started. He had forgotten about Rory. His vision fully adjusted, and he could see now as clearly as in the daylight. He propped himself up on one elbow.
“You’re still here?”
Rory nodded. Dante felt relieved, oddly, but also embarrassed.
“I don’t get nightmares very often,” he explained. “Not since I was a little kid. I don’t know what that was.”

They’re the ones who see everything, they are… are cruel…” he tested out the word, knowing he had heard it somewhere recently. “They make sure the soldiers stay in line, and if you get sent to Agent command, you don’t come back. You hope you die before you get there.” He licked his dry lips uneasily. “They’re always there and they see everything. They know everything.”
