      Lois

“I’m just… worried about my sister. A bit. You met her and her friend in the library. She…” Lois shook his head. “Never mind it. There’s not really anything I can do while in class anyway.”

Hmmm… *Note* I made up a mineral since I couldn’t find one that fit the description.

        Viktor

A little sister problem then. Viktor squinted though his dusty goggles at his partner. He wouldn’t want to pry, but Lois had been nice, friendly. He deserved the same in return.

“OK. If you want to talk about it though, I don’t mind. Maybe now, maybe later. I’m no phycologist, but I have sisters too, one about Brea’s age. I think -oh!”

The mineral he was looking for stared up in sudden clarity. He bit back a laugh and reached for the sample.

“This is … Something with a long, fancy name.” He showed Lois the page. “It’s used in dyes but darkens when it… oxi-dyes-zez.”

Lois took the scrap of rock with a subtle smile.

          Hugo

“Odd number of people.” Hugo settled onto the dark oak seat next to Victor. When he saw some of the students nervously covering their mouths as they mixed and matched substances, he took his scarf and pulled it over his freckled nose. His voice came out muffled. “Ah, you said… I want to guess. Is it corpse crystal? And what are you talking about besides that, anyway?”

            Lois

Lois looked down at the textbook. Corpse crystal wasn’t actually the scientific name given in the book, but, just like fool’s gold was another name for pyrite, Hugo was technically correct.

“And what are you talking about besides that, anyway?”

“Living imaginary friends and little siblings.” Lois put away the corpse crystal, and pulled out a new mineral. This one was a light pink and semi translucent, with scratches on its surface and a few cracks running through the middle. He rubbed it with his thumb to give it a bit more shine. “Mine in particular.”

He handed the rock to Viktor, who eagerly tried it out on the porcelain. It left a faint white streak. Lois smiled on the inside. Though he didn’t find this class very interesting, being next to someone who did made the experience a lot more fun than it would have been on his own.

              Ah! It’s Hugo! (Hi, Whaley.)

Also… Why does Viktor grin so much… I need more expressions to express a cheerful nature without sounding like a brainless lunatic. XD

              Viktor

Imaginary friends, sisters, and… Corpse Crystal? That felt like an insult to the lovely color on his plate, although the mineral itself was less than beautiful. A bit dark and unfriendly at first, not unlike himself. Although he was alive. His sisters too, despite popular theory.

Useless thoughts. They distracted him from the important things, like the two samples they had left. Lois had the first ready for him. It caught the light like a semi-precious stone. Viktor stared at it a moment, before flipping over with a grin.

A fine white line traced where the mineral touched down on the porcelain. The teacher had said something about that meaning there was quartz or maybe carbon in the rock. It had to be hard to leave so little behind. He rubbed it again for good measure before laying the testing plate down beside the chart.

“Pink but leaves white dust behind.”

Hugo was already pointing to two options.

                @loopylin @elishavet-pidyon (Hi!)

                Hugo

It was funny to see what the book said about each mineral. It said the corpse crystal was uncommon, which didn’t make sense at all. Hugo also identified the magnetite and schreibersite without much trouble. Magnets and meteorites collected where he lived. The thought turned into a mixed feeling as he watched other students confuse and mislabel their samples.

Lois was a lot better at judging by the book. He looked serious and unfazed, and as time had passed, that expression proved to be a useful classroom face. Viktor, with a preoccupied smile, performed the scratch tests.

Hugo rolled Lois’ response around in his mind, like a lemon drop left to melt under a tongue. “I had a few imaginary friends. Is this about your sister?”

@whalekeeper I am impressed that your worldbuilding has gone as far as making up new minerals for the world. Did you make those up on the spot?

                  @elishavet-pidyon
Whenever I write Dante, I definitely overuse the word “grin” too, lol. Sometimes words just stick i guess

                  Lois

Lois gave a simple nod. He wrote down something in his class notes, then tapped his pencil repeatedly on the desk.

“She and Benny used to get along a lot better. You’re supposed to get along with the friends that you make up, right? But now it sometimes seems like she wants nothing to do with him. It turns into straight up bullying at times, not that you can do much to hurt a cartoon made of ink.” His pencil tapping sped up. “I just hope she makes some real friends here. It’s why I bothered my parents so much about sending her.”

@loopylin @elishavet-pidyon I did not make up the minerals, they are real. But I have worldbuilt to the point where I can guess what’s there cuz of location history. XD I’ve toyed with the idea of researching certain materials.

                    Hugo

“Huh.” Hugo absently arranged the rocks into a circle on his desk. “I was always a bit of a role-player. I’d pretend people sat around me while I ate. When I first wanted my brother to stay with me, I pushed my imaginary friends out, and told them there wasn’t room anymore. Maybe she’s just figuring out what she wants.”

                        Lois

“I suppose.” Lois felt his worry go dull, like a voice being muffled in a midwinter snowfall. He let the flakes bury it, and turned back to the science project. He’d check in with Brea before tonight.

After identifying the last mineral, a chalky white crumbly rock, the group looked around to find that they were one of the first ones done. Lois rolled up his left sleeve a bit and began doodling on his arm with a pen.

@esther-c @keilah-h I bet we can get there before 2026. We just have maybe twoish more class periods and lunch before the dance.

@everyone would people be ok with making classes end early today to give the students time to get ready and to make the dance come quicker? I’m thinking one more class period, lunch, and then one last class.

                                That’s probably a good idea.

If they leave early, maybe one of my charities will forget something in the rush, so they have to come back to get it. That way they’d be around the school during the dance. (I don’t think any of them are planning to formally attend.)
