*gasp* He did not! OH MY WORD! HE CALLED HIM LITTLE BROTHER!!!!!!! 😍😍🥹

      *Calms down*

I literally gasped when I read that. 😂

      Rory

Rory started and looked up at Leo, his mind racing. Little brother…. the first born were the elite, making the younger siblings inferiors. Being called little brother was the highest of insults. But… little brothers weren’t owned by the government in the same way older ones were. They were more like people. They had names and they had meaning. Not just tools in the hands of other men. Rory cast aside all societal norms and smiled. Little brother. The term had warmth to it. He liked it.

After a moment his thoughts replayed the question. “What’s on your mind?” Oh! Rory hesitated a second and glanced at the rail that ran around the elevator. His hand was gripping it until the knuckles were white. He didn’t like elevators.

They were too much like planes.

He looked back at Leo. “I… I’m not sure really. I’m still trying to figure it out, it’s just–” he broke off with a sigh and toed the ground with his boot. “I guess I’m confused, and it’s weird. I’ve never been allowed to be confused before. I just had to obey and not ask. Now… well… it almost feels like I’m allowed to be confused. Which is kind of nice actually.” He looked down and pushed harder against the ground, letting his boot squeak. “I… I’m sorry. I should just accept it, shouldn’t I?”

I was skimming back through the RP and found one of Rory’s first encounters.

        Made me laugh so hard.

        Rory

Rory jumped and spun, aiming a blow at Hunter with his fist. He pulled up just in time and froze. “Hey Hunter.” He quickly opened his fist and made a waving motion with his hand. “Hi Hunter. Hello Hunter. Hey Hunter… Hi.” Rory shoved his hands in his pockets. He could feel his ears burning and he really, really wanted to hit something.

        Or disappear.

Oh my word! I just realized that Leo and Rory started their relationship working on a team! (fixing lightbulbs) and now they’ve made full circle!

Their relationship could be a book!

          This is awesome!

Aaaannnndddd Rory has come a long way. He did not trust Leo to begin with.

          Rory

Leo looked at Rory a moment, and Rory fought the urge to run. Stay calm, you’ve been trained to kill your whole life, you can take him out if he does anything. Then, another part of Rory spoke, the part he had hidden in order to stay alive. But… I don’t want to hurt him.

Leo’s voice jerked Rory out of his thoughts. “Sure. Why don’t you come help me change a lightbulb? It’s in room 204K, just up the hall. It’s empty today.”

He pointed to the classroom door with 204K written in gold over the lintel.

          Rory swallowed hard and nodded.

          Rory: *contemplating death and destruction*

          Leo: *caring but oblivious*

          Leo

The kid seemed a little tense. Maybe he was just uncomfortable.

Which made sense if he was wanting to discuss whatever had put that look in his eyes.

Leo let the classroom door almost close behind him as he flicked on the light switch.

Five out of six florescent lights blinked on. The other didn’t even flicker. He set a chair under it and smiled at Rory.

          “Mind holding this steady?”

Ahhh!! Leo’s first encounter with Agents!!! 😝

            Agents

Instead of being met by a wild rush, all the young Agent saw was a janitor. The fellow turned, and 225 saw that he could only be a year or two older then himself. The janitor looked surprised, but 225 was suspicious. Something wasn’t right.
The young Agent stepped into the closet, letting go of the knife as he did. His whole baring reeked of self confidence. Not only was the young man in front of him not a lowly soldier, this was an inferior. 225 smiled, but it was a smile that never reached his eyes. “I’m looking for someone, and I think you know something.”

when the janitor didn’t respond at once, 225 grabbed his shirt and shoved the young man against the wall. “I’m looking for a boy, and I need answers. Now.”

            Leo

Leo didn’t like these kids. He stared back with bored annoyance, laying one gloved hand over the fist that gripped his shirt. His palm turned icy cold.

“If you like this shirt, go buy yourself one, kid. What do you want me to do? Quote Pi to the 40th digit? Explain nuclear fusion? Or something you’d actually understand?” His other gloved hand found the Agent’s wrist with another icy grip. “Students aren’t allowed in here.”

            The Agents

“How dare you speak to me in such a fashion. You have no idea of your place, boy. You will answer me at once or we will have to persuade you. Now, tell me what you know. You do know something, I can see it. I haven’t been trained in integration seven years for nothing. If you make me use force, I’ll  see to it that you never have the chance to tell a soul.”

Behind him, 229 switched open his knife.

225 narrowed his eyes to slits and smiled. “What’s it gonna be, boy?”

            Leo

“Look kid, I don’t have time for this today. Go do your own homework.” As he spoke Leo lifted the Agent’s now nerveless hands from his shirt and wrenched his arms behind his back. Shocked and off balance, the kid went down with surprising ease. He stared uncomprehending as Leo stepped over him. The temporary paralysis wouldn’t last long.

Leo dodged a stab from the Agent’s knife and caught it in a gloved hand, twisting away to grab the nearest spray bottle.

Cleaning vinegar. Nice. A full spray caught the Agent square in the face.

The next few moments were a blur of flying fists and confusion. In the midst of creating the chaos, Leo managed to dive past the agent and snag the precious trash can on his way through the door.

“Rinse well in warm water!” He called behind him as the door slammed shut.

              XD

              Oh my word.

Also, I enjoyed writing those Leo-bests-the-creeps scenes so much. It was awesome.

              Leo

“Of course not. Faith in something just because someone else said so is about as solid as water. You might build a house from ice, but when Summer comes round it’s all melt away. If you want what you build to last, you’re going to have to find some rock.”

The elevator came to a slow, creaking stop. Leo waited a moment for the doors to squeal open. His rubber soled boots squeaked over tile floor.

“Confusion is part of the process of understanding something. It means your mind is trying to figure it out.” He kept his pace easy to stay beside Rory as they walked. “Sure, it is frustrating, but give it time.”

Not allowed to be confused. Blue stars. Those creeps really hard wanted robots. Idiot creeps.

Rory walked slowly beside Leo. He was relieved that he was allowed to question, but he was also scared to do so. Things were so muddled. Rory wanted somewhere to go that made sense. That was safe.

He wanted to go back to the church.

For a moment he almost asked Leo, but he held back. Instead, he asked, “Where now?”

                    I know!! XD

                    Leo

Their footsteps echoed faintly along the school hallway. A teacher’s lecture sounded muffled behind closed doors.

                    “Where now?”

Leo looked over at the kid. He was limping. They really needed to get him checked out by a doctor…but Rory hadn’t seemed thrilled with that sugestion. At least Leo could pick up a knee brace or some crutches from the over the counter pharmacy on the way home.

But the kid had asked him something.

“Some kid wrenched the hand rail in the bathroom. It’ll only take a few minutes to screwed back up. Then we’re back to the basement waiting for orders.”

Ah, that cool, quiet breakroom. So many machines. So little supervision. Leo smiled.

                      Rory

Rory nodded and picked up his pace a little. He forced his knee to bend as he walked, keeping himself steady though tears burned his eyes, causing them to blur. He took in a slow breath. He would be fine. He had hidden injuries before. He’d had to. When weapons broke…….

Rory shook the nightmarish thoughts away.

                        Leo

The bathroom door squeaked as he pushed through. The faint smell of bleach and glass cleaner rushed to meet him. He held it open for Rory, noting with concern the pinched look in the boy’s face.

                        “This’ll only take a minute.”

Someone had thought to block the damaged stall with a trashcan. Helpful.

The handrail was hanging lopsided from one screw, the other end resting on the floor. Leo lifted it back in place and pulled out his screwdriver. Then stopped.

The previous screw had gutted it’s hole, leaving nothing for the new one to hold onto. He could move it over by and inch, but then the rail would be crooked…

Aluminum putty. He nodded to himself.

“Here kid, hold this in place for a moment, please.” Rory appeared beside him and took the rail. Leo stepped back.

                        “A little higher. Perfect.”

The putty squeezed from its tube like silver toothpaste. In a moment he had the hold filled. In went the new screw, putty oozing out around it. He smeared it smooth to the rail.

“This is going to be bright, so you may want to close your eyes.” He pulled the torch out of his belt.

                            NO!!!!

                            Rory

When the fire flared and the torch began it’s whispering hiss, Rory felt himself jerk back. A scream echoed in his mind. They were spinning, falling, going down. He couldn’t get free. Do something! Don’t let us die! Please! The scream of his friend clawed through his mind.

The bar slipped from Rory’s hands and screeched against the wall as he stumbled back. All at once the world snapped back into focus, and Rory realized his mistake. Threads of his old life pulled at him and he cowered away. “I’m sorry,” he whispered. “Please… please don’t–” he choked on the last words and closed his eyes tightly, trying to force the sneering faces of cruel agents and officers from his mind. Make one wrong move, and you’re done for. Anything I don’t approve, and it’s over.

                              Leo

He caught the bar before it could fall and clamped it back in place until he could switch off the torch. He waited a moment until the putty had hardened enough to let go.

Then he sucked in a breath. Slipped the torch back in his belt.

“Kid.” He glanced out the open stall door, reassuring himself no one else was in here with them. He kept his voice low, calm. “Hey. I’m not going to hurt you. You’re safe.”

Rory was still curling in on himself, half lost in whatever nightmare he thought he was in. Had probably been in time and again.

“Hey, Rory. It’s alright. You gave me a bit of a scare there. Thought you’d just got burned. But…”

The kid had been burned. Just not right now, and maybe not physically. Leo blinked back the dampness in his eyes.

                              Poor kid. He swallowed.

“Come on. You’re not in trouble. Let’s get down to the break room and see if I can find some ice for your knee.”

Hey, Rory. It’s alright. You gave me a bit of a scare there. Thought you’d just got burned. But…”

This just feels so natural! I can literally hear his voice in my head!

                                Rory

Rory could feel a tremor fighting to shake him, but he forced it to keep still. Leo’s calm voice reached out, pulling him back to the world he now knew. He looked up. “I’m sorry,” he repeated, this time apologizing for the flashbacks that kept throwing him into panic, dragging him into that old life. How was Leo putting up with it? “I… i won’t let it happen again,” he managed.

Wouldn’t let it happen? Leo swallowed and shook his head.

“No. Kid. There’s nothing to be sorry for.” Leo stepped closer to put his arm around Rory’s shoulders. He knew this wasn’t a matter of if the boy would have these nightmares, but when. “Don’t worry about these pickles either, whenever they pop up. Now, let’s get back to that break room.”

He gave Rory’s shoulders another light squeeze anled him back to the door.
