Some very loud adult voice shuddered over a speaker, reading off some kind of behavior code with half the heart of a dead trout. She sounded exhausted.
I will take that transition and roll with it. XD
And I apologize for the semi-purposeless roleplay here, I’m very exhausted today and I didn’t have much else to do.
Barnes
Barnes put down the microphone and yawned, pushing her seat back so she could bury her face in her arms.
She had spent the rest of the night searching for useful paperwork – anything to keep people from stampeding the school, snatching students. After hours of nothing, she had realized with horror that she still had to fill in for literature class. Of course, she could handle a lot of pressure. If anyone could handle this position, it was her. She just needed a spreadsheet for her time.
A nearby phone rang.
I can’t look like this. Barnes sat up quickly, her spine straight as a rod, and smoothed down her clothes so she was sort of symmetrical. She sighed, sliding into an expressionless monotone as she responded. “Destina personnel, how can I help you?”
“Is this Lucille?” It was the trembling voice of an older woman.
It took a moment for Barnes to realize who it was. Her heart did a little flip, and she tapped the side of her mask as she remained in control. “Momma Desi, I need you to -“
“Oh, goodness!” The voice immediately went into speed mode. “Sweetie dove, you haven’t been in town for months. I checked the apartment, and the casserole I sent you was inedible. I don’t care if you’re on the run from the police – although, dear, I should probably turn you in – you still need to take care of your food before it expires. It’s disgusting. Your fridge is filled with ‘evidence bags’ and I can’t get a pan in edgewise.”
Barnes took off her mask and rubbed the bridge of her nose. “I don’t think you understand what I do.”
“You don’t do anything. You’re a recluse, dear.”
The door to the sound booth swung open. Barnes stared at the intruder, mask in shadow and her tall form looming over the technology, until the door swung shut again.
“Anyway, just checking to see where you are. Be a smart girl for us!” The phone went quiet.
Barnes continued to rub her temples for a long time after the call ended. The world in which her parents lived felt incredibly distant. Sometimes Barnes had to double check herself whenever someone spoke her first name. Someday she would have to enter their world again to find a caretaker, and that would be the last time.
Barnes got up and took her suitcase from beneath the table. She walked out of the sound booth and into the school halls, leaving an empty path behind her with frightened students in her wake.

Fork the GorkFebruary 4, 2025 at 12:27 pm #196972Not sure what to do to push this since Leo is kinda in charge at the moment…..
Rory
Rory got dressed, feeling very relieved as he stripped off his sweaty and somewhat bloody clothing. After that, Leo changed the dressings on his injuries, and Rory limped to the table to eat a quick breakfast. He glanced at Silvia and Quincy– both of whom looked pretty spent– and back to Leo.
The difference between these kids and the ones he’d grown up with would never cease to amaze him.

“Head to class, head to class. Not a bad idea if zi knew where said class was.” He flipped backwards off Rax’s shoulders to land in a crouch in a cushioning puddle. He flicked the water away and dusted off the moisture. “Time of reconing I suppose. You wouldn’t happen to know where the…” He pulled a folded up bit of parchment from his sash. After a quick perusal he looked back up. “Foriegn Literature class might be per chance?”

Fork the GorkFebruary 4, 2025 at 1:05 pm #196988You’re fine. You’re still in charge of your character, but I get it. =)
Leo
He stacked their empty plates and carried them to the sink. They’d do the washing up later.
“Quincy, you got your backpack?”
The boy nodded and grinned, swinging his feet under his chair. Bare feet. Silvia her out a half exasperated laugh. “Monkey, where are your shoes?”
Quincy looked down at his toes. Leo sighed.
Five minutes later, the shoes were found flung under the couch and buckled back on. The group stood by the door with jackets and backpacks on. Leo kept paused with his hand on the door.
“Lord, keep us protect us today. Guide our steps. Put someone in our path for us to help. Thank you Lord Jesus.”
Silvia and Quincy echoed his “amen” and he opened the door. The landing outside was small, ending in a flight of stairs. Leo let Silvia hold onto Quincy, instead balancing Rory with a hand under his arm.
“Lean on me as much as you need. Sorry there isn’t an elevator here.”

Rory grabbed the rail and leaned against Leo. The stairs were horrible. Tears stung his eyes but he forced them back. Glancing down, he saw a spot of blood soaking through the pants Leo had lent him. The road-burn most have cracked open due to the movement.
Rory glanced at Leo to make sure he wasn’t looking before he wiped the tears from his eyes with the back of his hand. He looked up and almost let out a breath of relief when he saw the bus stop not too far away.

canon dialogue from him:
(on the phone with his father) “Dad? Dad, I’m a- Ye- Not a ‘crazed gunman’, dad, I’m an assassin! …Well, the difference bein’ one is a job and the other’s a mental sickness!”
(later, talking to someone else) “I’ll be honest with ya: my parents do not care for it.” [“it” meaning his job]
They both should be happy though. At least they have parents who care about them.

Listening to Rory’s pain filled breathing made Leo’s own throat ache. He shifted to take more of the kid’s weight.
Then they were on the pavement outside the apartment complex. Another five halting steps deposited them on the bench at the bus stop. Leo let out a gust of air.
“Sorry kid. You probably shouldn’t be out of bed for at least another thirty-two hours.” He helped Quincy climb up into his lap. This was going to be a long day.
Silvia sat on the other side of Rory and turned those inquisitive eyes on him. “Rory, have you ever seen the stars?”

Rory blinked. Uh…. I think. They’re just white spots in the sky. I’ve seen a handful once or twice if I look really hard beyond the lights of the base. I’m not our at night unless we’re doing training… or we’re attacking something.” He shuddered. “Why do you ask?”

My grandma will call or text at the randomest times, and I always get surprised because I’m in the middle of something. :p

Yup, even if the relationship is kind of distant. I thought about killing off the parents, but Barnes has enough sadness already, and I felt it would be appropriate to give her a family to support.

Spangled darkness in a thousand colors. Gleaming nebula. White dwarfs.
Silvia blinked away the swirling images. Another time maybe. She’d fly again. She shrugged.
“Just wondering. Not many people around here have.”
She turned her head, catching the distant rattling of the bus coming up the street. A sigh brushed past her lips.
Leo
He looked up, a smile on his face. Time to get moving. He stood and settled Quincy on his hip before offering a hand to Rory.
“Ready for a lorry ride?”

Took Leo’s hand. “Uh…. the last time I road one of these I was chased down, jumped off the moving vehicle, and then was tackled into a store, almost hit by a car, and beaten up in an ally.” He let out a deep breath. “Yeah, I’m ready.”
(Rory tries his hand at sarcasm…… hmmmm. Leo’s influence is doing things.)

Leo
He bit back a grin. “Like they always say, it’s not save to jump out of a moving vehicle.”
The lorry door whooshed open. Silvia led the group aboard, waving their bus card under a the scanner. Leo helped Rory up the steps as inconspicuously as possible. The lorry was mostly empty this early in the morning. Their few fellow riders looked either asleep, or entirely absorbed in laptops.
Silvia slid into a seat halfway to the back. A windows seat. Quincy climbed in beside her. Leo helped Rory into the seat directly behind her and slid in after him. He shot Rory a smile.
“We should be at the school in about fifteen minutes, so enjoy the ride.”

Rory leaned his head back and closed his eyes. The bus began to move, and he opened his eyes a crack. There was a young man who seemed to be sleeping in the corner of a seat several rows up. He had his hands shoved into his pockets. Rory looked down at his own pants. There were big pockets in them. He cautiously shoved his hands inside, expected to be reprimanded. No one yelled at him, so he closed his eyes again.
