Oof. Lucille has my sympathies. (I’m going to enjoy calling her that.) Filing stuff stinks. As does doing a job on your own.
Mmm… Nougat.

Lukas
Lukas watched as Livia played with water between her hands. He was captivated for only a moment before his eyes roved to her face. A listless, wandering look swam behind those bright blue pools.
Lukas knew it wouldn’t be easy for her with Xandro not being there–although that was good news for him. He didn’t know what to say to make her feel better. He was never good at stuff like that.
“Livia, are you okay?” He leaned down to catch her empty gaze.

January 4, 2025 at 7:39 pm #193736Ah nougat. Been a while since I had that lovely sweet fluff. Or, kind of fluff.
Leo
Filing papers. Long hours with nothing but a dim lightbulb and the musty smell of ink and paper. Leo gave the poor woman a small smile.
He hoped the necklace wasn’t sticky.
“I’ve noticed the school’s inattention.” Used that inattention too. He set down his mug. “It kinda makes my old boss look obsessed in comparison.”
Except that the man didn’t really need the comparison to look like a resource librarian with cabin fever.

Nooo you can’t call her Lucille, she doesn’t like that. XD She’s very used to overworking and not making any friends. Thus the inability to show likable emotions.
It was homemade nougat, I got there just in time to see my friends making them. The amount of chocolate and marshmallow on their hands looked like something a toddler would get into, hehe.
Barnes
“Yes. I am tired. Very, very tired.” Barnes’ voice rose to a high pitch as she yawned. She chugged her entire mug of caffeinated tea and slid her mask back on. “Not to mention, I followed you all evening to bring you back to the school. I realize someone is chasing Rory, and one of these people attacked your sister. Which world are these attackers coming from, and why?”

He felt his teeth grit. He sighed.
“I… don’t know the name. Rory’s home, if you can call it that. It’s the government. Rory was one of their…soldiers, and I might have interfered with their…methods of administration. Which I’m not sorry for. They decided to mess with my siblings for some unexplainable reasoning from their warped, one cell, pea brains. Insufferable idiots.” He dug his fingers into the chair arm and sucked in a deep breath. Pulled on a smile. ” A student defended my sister, another student helped retrieve Quincy, and we’ve been running since.”

“Livia, are you okay?”
She blinked hard, still refusing to make eye contact.
She formed the moisture into the form of a horse, letting it gallop around on her palm.
She missed Xandro.Â
She let the water fall off her hand and into the churning waters below.
Finally, she let out a shuddering sigh, and turned to face him.
“No,” she whispered.

This information had only been guesswork up until this point. Now, Barnes could remember Rory’s file. It had been newer than the others, and very scarce of words.
“Is there a way of convincing them Rory isn’t worth the risk? To them, not us,” she added.

That was a valid idea, one he’d happily get behind if they could figure out a way. It might save them from another relocation.
“I don’t know, but I’m not experienced in convincing. Just disappearing and mechanics. If we could…” He glanced at Rory. Silvia was right. The boy did look like he’d seen a bit too much action for the day. Perhaps even the year. He likely needed a visit to the doctor, although a some sleep and the first aid kit would probably do for now.

Fork the GorkJanuary 4, 2025 at 11:26 pm #193747Just moving my folks. We watched a documentary on Europe and now I need to cope. XD
Liora (street crossing near the school)
Evening was coming and with it an abundance of artificial starlight. Liora followed ReĂșven into a circle of yellow streetlight comfort. There was a patch of grass beside the light and she could hear crickets starting up a concert in it.
No, not crickets. The piercing whistle of a piccolo sounded from somewhere nearby. She paused to listen.
“Beni, I think there’s a parade.”
Be definition, most people liked parades. Bobbing lights and singing characters cause a happy sort of chaos. By coloquial definition, that it. ReĂșven was by no means a coloquial.
He spun toward the street that the sounds were wandering up from. His hand caught her wrist, long fingers wrapping around it like she was a child that could get lost too easily.
“We’re late.” He said quietly. She hated the smile he used right then. Hated it to her core.
They moved toward the school and she did not miss how his hand trembled the moment he realized they would have to cut through the festivities. She hated that tremble too, so much that she slid her hand around to put it in his.
“It’s just a parade, Beni. A little one put on by the middle school.”
He grimaced, which said how much he appreciated her concern. She sighed.
The sidewalks were crowded. Apparently ever mother, Aunt, and friend’s sister’s uncle’s in-laws were out to show their support. Liora let ReĂșven pull her along through the maze of lawn chairs and misplaced trucks. They left a string of “excuse me” and “pardon us” behind them like children in a fairytale who had no breadcrumbs left to mark their way.
And like a fairytale, it was over before it had really started. They flew across the street as if wings of eagles had borne them on. If she tripped, which she did, a terrified arm was there to catch her and sped her to the other side before the looming rubber ducky float squashed them flat.
They halted under another lone streetlight. This time there really were crickets.
“Are you..?”
“All right? Yes. Just stubbed my toe.”
He leaned against the post with a shudder of relief. His eyes closed.
“You shouldn’t be able to do that.” He muttered.
“Do what?”
“Read my mind. Come on, let’s see if we can find my cousin.”

January 5, 2025 at 8:31 am #193751Aannnddd I’m left in the dust. What is it with you night owls?
oh boy, you mention “doctor” and Rory’ll flip out bad.
You don’t want to see that.
Rory
When Barnes actually took off her mask, Rory started in surprise a little. He had been preparing to surprise her and somehow get it off. He needed to see the face beneath…. but now she had willingly taken it off, and her face didn’t do much to tip him one way or the other. He was thoroughly confused….. and tired.
They were talking about him, he knew. But he wasn’t able to focus. He had heard people discussing him so often that it wasn’t enough of a novelty to keep him awake. He slowly sat down on the couch next to Silvia. She looked a little surprised, and Rory quickly scrambled to his feet and moved to the other side of the couch. He perched on the arm. Nothing in him wanted to frighten Silvia or make her any more ill at ease.
Not after what happened.
Rory stifled a yawn with the back of his hand and refocused on what Barnes and Leo were saying.
âI donât know, but Iâm not experienced in convincing,” Leo said. “Just disappearing and mechanics. If we couldâŠâ He glanced at Rory.
Rory blinked and looked up at him a little bleary eyed. “If we could what?”

âNo.â
Lukas ran his tongue over his lips. At least he got a clear answer. He had heard from his brothers before that girls would say they were fine when they actually werenât. If Livia hadnât answered that way, then that must mean she really wasnât okay.
âWhy?â
By Livâs expression, that was definitely not the right reaction.
âI meanâ it will be okay. Well, I guess itâs not okay, if youâreââ He started fidgeting with his curls again. With a huff, he awkwardly held out his arms. âWould a hug help?â Girls always liked hugs, right?

Liv sighed, letting him hold her for a few seconds.
“I’m sorry…I know I haven’t been the best friend,” she pulled out her phone and showed him all the unread and unanswered messages. “I haven’t had the motivation to do anything lately.”

He wiped his sweaty palms on his hands as Livia tucked her phone back into her pocket. “Then let’s change that! I can help you catch up on everything so people don’t think you feel off the face of the planet.” He cracked a lopsided smile.
