      @koshka

      Well… It’s a long one. I hope you don’t mind how much I wrote your characters. 😉

      Reúven

They had exited the bus by an apartment complex. Reúven followed Liora while she continued to steady the young girl. Well, young was relative. They looked of an age if he thought about it.

Lelo set down the little boy, who clung to his pant leg sleepily. The little fingers didn’t appear to mind that Lelo’s clothing was more metallic that fabric.

Odd… But not the strangest thing Reúven had seen in this city. Lelo’s distraction was more concerning.

      “Sis, I’ve got to go.”

“I’ve a key.” The words were brave. She might have been asleep on her feet a second ago. Lelo only nodded.

      “Good. Be safe.”

And with that he was gone. Reúven exchanged a look with Liora. She turned to the girl with that smile that was all sunbeams and sparkling water.

      “Is your apartment nearby?”

“Yes.” The girl pointed to their left. “I can make it on my own. Thank you for helping.”

“Of course.” Liora smiled again but did not leave the girl’s side. They began walking toward the buildings.

Small hands bounced against Reúven’s thigh. He reached down and picked up the boy without another thought. Wide brown eyes stared into his own hazel pair. The kid slid the necklace he was playing with back into his mouth.

      “My name’s Quincy. What’s yours?”

      “Reúven.”

“Re..Ruven.” The syllables were probably confusing on the little tongue. Reúven grinned at Quincy.

“Perfect. Let’s go catch up with the ladies.”

“Positive.” Quincy quipped, as if that was a normal thing for a five year old to day. A five year old who had apparently had enough of naps and wanted answers to his thousand questions.

“Are you a soldier? I like your shirt. Is it a uni…uniform?” Pride at using such a big word gleam in his eyes.

“I’m not a soldier yet, but yes, this is a uniform.”

‘Are you gonna be a soldier guy?”

      “Maybe.”

      “Do you like cookies?”

      “Of course I do.”

      “Why do you talk funny?”

      “I’m not from here.”

“Me neither.” The boy relaxed with a happy sigh. They had reached a set of stairs leading up to the second story apartments. Liora followed… Sylvia. That’s what the girl had said her name was while Reúven was facing his interrogation.

The steps rang out into the air below with a hollow thrum. Gum wrappers skittered up with them as if the wind had given them life of their own. One flew out into the abyss below.

They reached the landing before Sylvia tripped in her exhaustion. Reúven muttered a prayer of relief.

“Here’s the apartment.” She stopped and began fiddling with a key. The only likely reason was to open the door, but she kept missing the lock, chipping the gold enamel off the keyhole. Liora took the key with another of her smiles. The door was open in a moment.

A fresh scent of clean floors and pancakes wafted out to meet them. Comfortable home smells. Reúven set Quincy down so he could join Sylvia.

You have listened to fears, child. Come, let me breathe on you... Are you brave again? -Aslan
