“P-perfect!”
Chase waited in silence as Sef finished her soda. Being in a good mood, he waved goodbye to Samuel, the man who ran the shop, on his way out. Even when they wandered the streets together for about half an hour, Chase left his hood down, openly smiling. His eyes only turned dark when someone got too near, and even then, they were never totally black, only navy blue or deep green. He held Sef’s hand as they walked, as if he was afraid he’d loose her if he let go. Chase even tried telling her a few animal jokes Nick Marshal would make up, trying to get Chase to laugh. Whether Sef was being nice by laughing or they were actually funny, Chase couldn’t tell…he didn’t even personally understand how a knock knock joke worked.
Their thirty minutes of wandering eventually paid off, when they came to a little park. The grass was neatly and recently cut, there were dark walnut benches with black metal frames, a firmly-packed walking path around the perimeter, some red maple, and cherry willow trees and a memorial with a statue in the center. The air was perfumed by the scents of the red, yellow, purple, and pink flowers planted at the,base of the statue.
Chase led Sef to one of the beautiful benches in the shade of the red maple. A bird sang above them, his feathers of bright orange and glossy black. Chase held up his hand, and the little bird flew down without hesitation. He rested on Chase’s hand, chirping quietly, and tilting his little fatherly head to the side.
“H-he’s cure-ree-ous about you.”

Lois finished cleaning up the mess, grabbed a new piece of paper, and sat back down. He tapped his pencil, staring at Felicity thoughtfully. After a moment he looked back down and began a new sketch.
âShe could do so much better,â he muttered very quietly to himself.
âEveryone wants to save the world, but no one wants to help mom with the dishes.â

“Can you talk back to animals?” she wondered aloud.

Chase pet the bird with one finger. “I-it de, de-pends. Wolves and foxes are easy-ist…with s-some birds. Snay-snakes don’t talk m-much. Deer use e-eyes. Squir-rels and chip-munk-kss okay. Many diff, diff-er-rent birds. Unicorns never, never stay long e-nuff.” Chase looked up at the sky as he listed off the forest creatures. “C-cats are o-okay. Moody, though. C-can’t talk with in-sects.” Setting the little bird on Sef’s shoulder, he pet again, as it began to sing. “I-I c-can’t speak to this one with, with words. But, but I un-der-stand. He thinks this is a…fine day. No storm is coming. But that’s most, mostly all b-birds say when sun sh-shines.”

“That’s amazing!” she laughed as the bird sang from her shoulder. “Thank you,” she smiled shyly at Chase.

Chase smiled back, staring up into the dark leaves of the maple above. “I-I just wih-wish I could un-der-stand trees. I-I hear some, somethings from crea-tures, b-but never die-rect-lee…directly! From trees.” Chase leaned back, his blue being invaded by some grey. Despite this, however, his voice remained the same as he told Sef, “T-that bird and his mate h-had nest in tree a-above us in Spring.”
The reason Chase can’t understand trees is because it’s not his element, and by the rules of the elementals, you cannot learn to be an elemental, you must have it already.

“Still, this is amazing,” she said, and meant it.

“N-not really. I-I have m-met an-another shy-ad before. He grew a t-tree from a, ac-corn to sap-ling in few min-utes. He shi-shifted at will an’ ease, eas-il-ly. He c-created white orbs, and t-tried to sh-show me too. He c-could do so much m-more.” Chase looked at his shoes, his voice dropping lower in volume. “I-if I were him, I…could’ve saved…my m-mother.” His eyes turned black, before a lock of hair fell from behind his ear, hiding his eyes from Sef’s sight. A couple drops of water landed on his shoes.

Without a word, she wrapped her arms around Chase, and laid her head on his chest.
She knew all too well what it felt like to be helpless, too helpless to save someone you cared about.
I don’t care what you’ve done, or who you couldn’t save…you’re enough for me…and that’s all that matters.
She closed her eyes, willing that he’d somehow hear the words she was too afraid to speak aloud.
