“Oh.” she paused, taking a sip of the blue drink, fighting a smile at the way that it bit her tongue. She swallowed. “It’s okay, we all make mistakes. I say plenty of things wrong all the time. And he’s okay now, that’s all that matters.” she could tell Chase wasn’t buying it. “Believe me, I know. We have enough on our minds as it is, dealing with our past, worrying about our future, without worrying about mistakes we make. Just know that your mistakes don’t define you, and no matter what you do, I’ll be right here.” she took his hand, willing him to look up, desperately needing to know that he believed in himself like she believed in him.

“Just know that your mistakes don’t define you, and no matter what you do, I’ll be right here.” Sef took his hand. Chase lifted his gaze, and the side of his mouth twitched, but his eyes remained a depressing dark color. My mistakes are what has led me here. My mistakes is what has harmed so many that I’ve cared about. My mistakes are what make it so hard to live sometimes. The side of his mouth twitched again. He wanted to smile for her, but he somehow couldn’t that second.

Why does this sound like a certain conversation in an update we had a while back? It’s so interesting to see the writer come out in the character sometimes.

“I’ve made mistakes. Plenty of them. But the more I think about them, the more I hate myself. I know.” she shuddered, remembering the times she’d cried out to the Great One, saying she’d never serve Him, telling Him she hated Him. Hearing her own voice screaming at her mahnith, not knowing that it would be the last words she’d ever speak to her. “Just please, please don’t hate yourself. There’s nothing the Great One won’t forgive. If He forgives the man who abused me, he can forgive anyone.” she kept looking into his eyes, her own eyes filling with tears.
She’d been there, she knew the pain of hating the person she’d become.
She knew what it felt like to feel the weight of condemnation, closing in until she was enveloped in darkness.
And she didn’t ever want to go back.
“Please, Chase. Forgive yourself. For me?”

Great One? Forgiveness? Chase squinted, trying to match what she had said to something he knew. The Marshall’s God? Is that who she’s talking about?
“Please, Chase. Forgive yourself. For me?”
Chase’s eyes became a muster of colors, coming and going, flashing and dying, before fading back into a deep green. “I-I don’t know how,” He stuttered.
“Gargoyles and thickets, griffins and briskets."

“I didn’t know how either,” she said. “Until I met someone really special…his name is Lilitu, and he helped me through everything, and he helped me to trust again, and then he taught me about the Great One.”
She saw the sadness in Chase’s eyes, and knew immediately what he was thinking.
“Don’t worry, it wasn’t like that.” She smiled reassuringly, as if to let him know that he would always be special to her, touching her heart in a way Lilitu never could. “Anyway, some people call the Great One “God”, or “Jesus”, but He has a lot of names. Without Him, I couldn’t ever be free from my past. I’ll tell you more later, if you want,” she said.

Thank you, Great One, she sent up a prayer.
She wanted so desperately for Chase to experience the same freedom she experienced, because it had changed her life.
“Okay, great!” she smiled, trying to hide how much hope those words gave her. “We can talk about that later…but for now…” her voice trailed off, as she took another sip of her Blue Raspberry soda. “What is in this stuff?! How come it keeps biting my tongue?”
