Half of Chase’s ability is him being observant, half of it is his shyiad blood. Creatures are considered an element on Wond, and Chase has both elemental power and energy power. Elemental power you have to be born with, energy power is possible to learn.

In other words, Chase can teach her some, but parts he can’t.

“Uh…shop, shopping. Blue r-rasp-berry. That’s, that’s some s-sort of dr-drink…” Chase shivered, black taking over his eyes, as he remembered the bottle that Marcel had originally set before Chase, until he realized Chase didn’t like glass bottles and poured it into a drinking glass. Then he remembered how Marcel had stormed off and almost gotten killed, or worse. I still need to apologize for whatever it was I said. Pulling himself out of his memories, Chase looked around the room nervously, trying to think. Suddenly, violet flashed over his eyes. “We c-can f-find out what el-else!”
“Gargoyles and thickets, griffins and briskets."

She frowned as she saw Chase’s eyes flicker to black.
“Are you okay?”
“Y-yeah, I-I’m fine,” he lowered his eyes.
If he doesn’t want to talk about it, I’m not going to make him.
“We should go find some fun stuff to do!” Sef smiled at him, hoping that he’d smile too.
Every time he smiled, her world got a little brighter.

Sef smiled, and Chase couldn’t help smiling back, his eyes turning a sparkling blue. They finished their slices of pizza, and left the pizzeria, Chase carrying the box.

“O-okay. I think it’s this way.” Chase took her hand gently, asking for her permission with his eyes. He didn’t bother pulling his hood up as they weaved through traffic and avoided people on the sidewalk. He got lost once, and wouldn’t stop apologizing for it, but he eventually reached the shop he had met Marcel in. Fishing in his pockets and setting money on the counter, he asked for “two b-blue raspberries in d-drinking glasses.” While they waited, he turned to Sef. “F-find good p-place to s-sit. I’ll be o-over in a minute.”

Sef took a deep breath, fighting her anxiety.
It’s fine. He’s right there.
She looked over her shoulder to make sure that Chase was still there…that he hadn’t left her, and then she quickly found an empty table and sat down.

Chase looked down, glancing at Sef as she walked away to find a table every couple seconds. He didn’t want to see the glass bottles. His eyes were dark as he walked over to Sef with the two glasses, but they quickly changed to a mixture of blue and green as he set a glass of blue fizzy drink in front of her.
“T-try it. I-it feels weir-d on…tongue.” He smiled, taking his own sip.
“Gargoyles and thickets, griffins and briskets."

“Are you okay?” she looked into his eyes. She noticed that whenever he was feeling sad or upset or worried, his eyes turned dark. “You can tell me anything,” she reassured him.
