“I love learning!” Hugo slung his bag over his shoulder. “And you read a bunch of herb books, which is basically the same thing. Something we have in common!”
He had coincidentally run into Nar, and the two had the same class together in another wing of the school. Nar seemed secretly relieved when Hugo showed up, as his habit of making friends came in handy in a crowd.
“You don’t study medicine, though,” Nar grinned. ” So not the same thing. That is like saying the study of war is the same as the study of culture.”
“This day and age, doll, those are the same.” Hugo stuck a bagel in his mouth. “Oops, sorry. Didn’t mean to… call you something like honey or darling. That’s normal where I come from.”
Nar blushed but didn’t get offended.
Mixing their cultures had proven difficult, because while the basic traditions were well and fine, how did you know if you were doing something “cultural”?
Then Hugo caught a glimpse of someone in the crowd, and he stood on his tiptoes, eyes turned wide and fiery.
“What is it?” Nar stood on her tiptoes too.
“Someone I know…” He almost said I hope, but the thought felt strange in his gut. His face shifted into the distance, eyes unfocusing. “No matter. Let’s go to class. What are your electives?”

“Thought I’d try band. I can play a good piano, and often do it to humor Jr, who likes to do a good metal music duet with me. I’m not sure the other one yet. Thought I’d wing it to win it or something, ya know? Besides, I dragon crash a lot of stuff like math.” She winked at him, glad Jr hadn’t heard him call her ‘doll’. To a Realn, if you said something like that, it was considered a sign of love. And if you love it, you kiss it. “Who’s the person ya saw?”
"You need French Toast."
And if you love it, you kiss it.
😂😝 Nar’s intrusive thoughts are hilarious.

“You don’t know her.”
Nar raised an eyebrow.
“We haven’t talked in a while, so it’s no big deal. Do you want me to carry your bag, or…”
And there she was. A girl with snowy hair and a slanted posture. Queenie.
“Hey, Angel-ooo,” she sang quietly, rubbing her lower shoulder.
“I’m… surprised to see you too.”
“Too? I’m not surprised. I knew your decrepit brother would be here, so I just -” she held her hands out in a gripping gesture, “assumed the full package.”
“With one comes the other.” Hugo took a breath. “Your upgraded prosthetics look… wow.”
“They look super clunky and weird, I know. But at least they get the job done and I don’t have to worry about using a wheelchair or -”
“You misunderstood! I like them; the washed out bronze really brings out your eyes.”
This was unexpected; Queenie whipped her head up, gazing at him from her unbalanced angle. She stayed that way for a moment, then coughed, looking away. “Huh. You’re right. Thank you.”
“I love when things bring out my friends’ brilliance.”
“…Me too. That seems like a genuine source of enjoyment, ” She pushed her headgear back, fluffy curls dangling over serious, steel rose eyes.
Hugo realized, with a jolt, that Nar still stood next to him. He hooked her arm in his. “Queens, this is Nar. We’re going to the school dance tomorrow, leave the other couples in the dust, and have an amazing time.”
“Of course!” Queenie elbowed the red-haired girl, and coughed again, until her voice almost wore out. “…You take care of Pretty Boy for me, ‘kay?”

😂😝 Nar’s intrusive thoughts are hilarious.
That saying is actually from a Ukrainian/Russian woman I know who was talking about how different manners are in her country.
Apparently a preacher from America said “love you, bye” to three girls who then got together and said they thought they were gonna get married. That’s one sticky wicket

“Don’t worry.” Nar smiled. “I might not practise much, but I still can wrench an arm out of socket if need be.” With her knowledge of anatomy, she also knew all pressure points, the places with the most nerve endings, and where to hit someone on the head and only give them a headache when they wake up. She also secretly carried a taser in the pocket of her shorts.
Nar cringed at what she said, realizing how that might sound to someone not Realn.
“I’m sorry. I forgot that in this culture, people apparently don’t understand the importance of Home Defence, let alone personal.” Nar pulled her pony tail out, and instead calmly braided her hair.
"You need French Toast."
Chase
“Oh.” Chase set down his pencil, after drawing a bird, and began reading again, leaving the other two to converse.
"You need French Toast."
I think I’ve heard a similar story before.

Hugo covered his mouth with amused shock.
“I guess that makes three of us.” Queenie swept her arm back like a piece of loose clothing, and gestured at Nar’s practical outfit. She spoke roughly. “Defense should be normalised. Physical prowess is important to me, but I can’t say the same for everyone. You like to push yourself?”

The flustered boy checked his watch. “Oops, we’re late! C’mon, Nar.”
He gave Queenie a friendly punch on the shoulder, and grabbed Nar’s hand to run off before getting punched back. They slowed to a walk after turning a corner.

Riker watched as Jr played with the knife. Jr finally placed the knife back in its sheath, deepened his voice, and asked, “Does your sister happen to be a rash little nurse who thinks no one can do wrong?”
Riker bit his lip. Angelina wasn’t rash. She was…passionate.

Riker sighed and nodded. “She believes in the best in people and can do some things without thinking.”
