The statement made Ev briefly wonder if Lukas was coming to the dance or not, but he shrugged it off. He’d ask him later.
“I might go by myself, though,” Tech added.
“Cool.” Ev paused for a moment, then snickered to himself as he said, “I could find you a girl…”
Ev laughed at Tech’s aghast and slightly embarrassed face. “Just kidding, just kidding,” Ev reassured. “I’ll leave you to it. Oh,” Ev looked around. “Looks like we’ve made it to the food court. What do you want to eat? I’ll pay.”

Marcel didn’t admit how much that made sense to him – because it did. A lot. He clutched his wrist, the feathers smashed against the bracelet beads. But one side of him remained calm and passive, as always. “Okay… so… you just sit. And let everyone make the decisions for you.”

“The dance poster outside my dorm mentioned dance lessons tonight,” Babs prompted. “We could tease our respective boys along.”
She pulled out her phone. “I’m going to call Calvin.”
Felicity nodded, and took a huge bite of her burger, tucking her pearly white hair behind an ear.
It took a minute, but the ringing cut off, and was replaced with a soft voice. “Babs, is that you?”
“Cal, do you have clothes for the dance?” Babs hadn’t meant to ask, but it just slipped out.
A pause. But he sounded as if he were smiling. His face across from hers, solemnly streaked with warmth. “Yes. I ordered something.”
“We’re going to practice, then.” Babs clutched her skirt hem.
“Oh, yes… Yes.”
“Stop it with the mysterious tone! It’s silly.”
A laugh. “Okay, Babs. See you soon. Hope you’re having fun doing girly stuff.”
The call ended.
Babs brushed her orange creamsicle hair back into tighter buns, like she did whenever she was flustered. “Okay, let’s go rent some bikes or something. You lead.”
Sebastian
Seb shook away from his delirium and half-crawled onto the tabletop, to snatch the invitation from the surprised Calligripho.
He held the shiny white paper up to his face. “Hmph. No firearms.”
“Let me see that -” Hugo reached for it, but Seb fully crawled onto the table and sat next to Dante’s plate of cheesy fries, where he couldn’t be bothered.
He looked up with a crook of the eyebrow. “I repeat, no firearms. That’s a problem. But at least I” – a gleaming white smile – “am already well learned in dance. Circling them will provide me with mild entertainment.”

“I guess. When something doesn’t go the way it should I…disappear for maybe a day to a week.”

“Look, Chase,” Marcel tried, “you’re avoiding peeps who could help you. You’re sitting around with that look on your face, wearing dark clothes… in theory, it looks kinda cool, but I don’t think those strats are too cheerful.”
He began unwrapping a straw from its paper tube. His pink eyebrows rose, painted with honesty. “You’re just depressing yourself, dude.”
