Marcel

The focus needed to keep Sebastian afloat put a strain on his wing’s muscles, and Marcel could almost feel the vibrations thrumming in his chest. Waves of nausea punched him in the stomach, but he swallowed them down. He could almost taste the butterflies.

If he practiced, he might even be able to create simple structures on command, like an extra floor on a building. He had made stairs before out of clouds. This shouldn’t be too hard. It was worth losing a few lunches.

“Hello. My name’s Katonia, or Kate for short. Do you know what class is next?”

It was the new girl, addressing Paxton. The little boy shuffled closer to Wolfie, blue eyes blinking, unsure of what to do in the wake of the questions.

Marcel breathed steadily in and out, until his inner workings were strong enough for him to reply. He realized he was clutching the sides of the table, knuckles white. “He doesn’t talk – much. The next class is Science… I think? Verify me, Sebastian, before I puke or something.”

“Duly noted.” Sebastian brushed back his hair with a hand, for the millionth time that day, and flashed a smile at Katonia. “Marcel is correct. After this most pleasant hour of stuffing faces, we shall study something along the lines of krataristoisthebestis, or everyoneadoressebastiania.”

“Maybe we should… conduct experiments on some specimens…” Marcel growled.

The ten-year-old put a hand to his heart, wounded. “What an inhuman practice.”

Calvin came forth, and patted the seats. “Why don’t you two sit down – Brian, Katonia? I know we have to leave for class soon, but at least eat something. Can I get anything for you?”

            Katonia

I was somewhat confused at the varied responses, and the obvious agony of the wingman. I collected myself to respond to Calvin’s question. (I had overheard him introduce himself to Brian — They were going to be the best of friends, I could already tell.) I smoothed my red-velvet dress – already painfully aware that very few other girls were wearing dresses. “Thank you Calvin, your offer is most kind,” I replied with a smile. Too many smiles never hurt anyone. “But please, call me Kate. Katonia is… a bit of a mouthfull. And thanks, everyone, for making room for us.” Brian and I sat down next to each other, and attempted to gulp down whatever it was the school lunch ladies were feeding us. I hoped that they didn’t have any ill will against us – there was no way that I could tell if the food was poisoned or not.

The conversation was interesting, and I made some progress on the food, until the time approached for the next class. From the information I gleaned, I pieced together that Brian and I would be heading to Chemistry class. I expected to be very bored, seeing as I had already memorized the chemistry textbook at home.

I was just disposing of my half-eaten “lunch” in a garbage can when the nearby door swung open noiselessly and Alchemo entered, unnoticed. His flowing black robe shimmered ever-so-slightly as he adjusted it, and his short-cropped, salt-and-pepper hair seemed to twinkle with radiated power. Alchemo cleared his throat and announced, “May I have everyone’s attention, please.” He was ignored by all. Undaunted, Alchemo tried again, louder this time. “Attention Please! I have an important announcement to make!” Still, everyone remained absorbed on their own conversations. They simply couldn’t hear Alchemo over the hubbub. Slightly miffed, Alchemo dug around in one of his many pockets, fished out a small, translucent gray jewel, polished it on his sleeve, brought it up to his clean-shaven face, and spoke into it. With tremendous volume, his voice reverberated off the walls, seeming to come from the floor itself. The whole building shook when he said, “If I may have everyone’s attention for just a moment.” Glass windows shook, lunch ladies covered their ears and dove for shelter, and every student in the room jumped (including myself) and turned to face the satisfied wizard.

Somehow, Alchemo turned the volume wayyyy down. “Ah, that’s better. Can everyone hear me?” A few nods. “Now, I have just returned from speaking with the Headmistress. She has granted me leave to teach an optional elective class. It is called, Basic Relics 101. In it, I will teach you how to use magical tools called relics, such as the device I am using right now. Class will be held in classroom H-7, the last classroom before the gym entrance. It will be held in the last time slot of the day each day. As I said before, it is optional; all are invited to attend, but none are required. I hope to see as many of you there as possible. That is all, carry on.” Alchemo carefully tweaked something in the gem, and then put it away. Silence reigned as he casually strolled out the door. As soon as it swung shut behind him, the room burst into discussion. Everyone was looking at each other and talking all at once. I returned to our table.

“I don’t know about all of you, but I’m definitely going to be attending,” I declared.

“Well of course, I couldn’t miss it either,” Brian replied stoutly. He turned to our tablemates. “So, how about the rest of you? Are any of you interested?”

                Calvin

Calvin sat back in his seat, and set his backpack on his lap.

“So, how about the rest of you? Are any of you interested?” Brain said, with a small, but enthusiastic glimmer in his expression.

Basic Relics. It sounded positively enrapturing.

Cal twisted the pins on his backpack, and bowed his head. “Well… I have already chosen my second elective. Cultural Anthropology.”

He had been so certain of what he wanted to study. He was still certain, but now, more than he had before, he wished there was another time slot.

He winced at the thought of what his father Noc would say.

You can only be High Lordling Calvin for so long, before you melt from the pressure. But Cal? You have the choice. Be a normal boy, or a mess of hot wax. I mean, I find the answer rather easy – but it’s your choice.

But relics… with a wizard, of all teachers…

“But there’s got to be some way,” Cal said firmly. “Can your wizard… turn back time or something? I can do both. Or at the very least, there might be some sort of recording I could watch in the evenings.”

                  Katonia

I pondered his question. “You know, I’m sure he has some sort of rock to record stuff on. He seems to have a rock for everything, if you know what I mean. I’ll see what I can do. Anyone else?”

@calyhuge Ah, time to meet my charries…..I’m sure at least one of them will have something to say about this development.

                      “A rock for everything….” LOL that’s a hilarious line.

                      Hunter

                      That man was weird.

                      But his class sounded….intriguing.

“Anyone to give up an elective to try that out? It sounds cool.” Hunter turned to his siblings, his tail flicking.

“I don’t have a second one.” Crosshair told him. “But magic training? Ugh.”

“Hey, you might find it to be fun.” Hunter elbowed him.

Tech looked up from some homework he’d decided to complete early. “And if we get attacked by an enchanted statue again, you’ll know what to do.”

                      Crosshair

He rolled his eyes at Tech’s comment.

Although…..he wasn’t going to tell Hunter, but…..it actually sounded a tiny bit interesting.

Becoming as powerful as Snake or Kote or any of the other great CloneWing kings of the past? He’d take it.

He got up from his seat and walked up to the boy that’d asked if anyone was interested. “Hello?” he asked. “What do you have to do to get into the class?”

@calyhuge this is what they look like btw. all but Omega and Beta. The one who’s talking to your charrie is Crosshair.
All righty! This fan art was the closest I found to what I’m imagining they look like. Just imagine the wings and tails on the characters. Left to right: Hunter, who has teal scales with a couple green stripes on his wings; Crosshair (yep, same one as in the character castle except he’s not married yet–obviously–and this version of him is a dragon), he has silver scales with a hardly noticeable dusting of darker gray on his wings; Tech, whose scales are sort of this slate blue color with white on his underside and wings; and Wrecker, whose scales are predominantly sky blue and periwinkle colored. And I’m going to go ahead and say the clothes they’re wearing in this picture are what they’re wearing here.
Chloe

I walked into the cafeteria with a slight bounce in my step. My skirt swirled. I was pretty late and it looked as if lunch was almost done, but I was very hungry, so I grabbed a tray.

I began to ladle blobs of food onto my plate, careful not to spill any of it on my nice, custom made fluffy white mittens.
I tugged them on tighter, glancing at the students surrounding me. What if they saw how humongous my hands were? And my feet, too?

But I have to be happy. So…

                          Stupid lynx paws…

I padded towards the middle of the room, trying to find a table.

A few of the tables were about to explode with people. One of them had a… celestial being? Who was balancing a boy with a top hat? There was also a dude with a sword? And a few dragon people? And a fox kid?

                          “Hmm, that’s interesting.”

                          Wahoo, first RP!!! 🙂

@keilah-h Thanks! So, my characters in this WIP live in the north and can each turn into a different snowy animal. And she can turn into a lynx, and lynx’s have really big paws, so she still has human hands and feet, but they’re just bigger then other peoples.

                                Katonia

“Hello?” he asked. “What do you have to do to get into the class?”

I turned to see who had spoken — and almost leapt right on top of the table. A dragon! Multiple dragons!! Wait, hold on a second… Recovering from my initial shock, I assessed this… being in front of me. He was sort of like a dragon, but not quite. First, he didn’t have those glowing-red, empty eye sockets of the dragons I’d seen. He also walked upright. He wasn’t built like a dragon, despite his silver-glimmer wings and tail. He also didn’t look hungry, and I knew one thing about dragons, it was that they were always looking for their next meal. I decided that this one was friendly, as were his friends.

Brian did not come under that impression at all. “Dragon! Kill it! Run!” His sword was out in a flash. I had to leap between him and the dragon-boy to prevent a inevitably lethal fight. Not necessarily lethal for the dragon, either.

“Stop! Brian, hold up! Wait!” He paused. “I think he’s friendly!” Brian was unconvinced (he rarely is when first told something impossible). “Brian, he’s not a real dragon. At least, not like the ones at home. He’s not trying to eat us – he’s trying to talk to us. Put away your sword already!” He slowly complied, still wary.

To the dragon boy, he said, “Try any funny business, buddy, and you’ll land yourself right in my crosshairs.”

I tried to reassure the imposing, and actually somewhat handsome, scaly figure. “I’m sorry. Were we come from, all dragons try to eat us. We have a saying – ‘If it has scales, kill it’. So, back to your question, about the class. I think we just show up. Brian, tell me if I’m wrong.”

“I think you’re right, Kate. But… seriously… a dragon? How could this possibly end well?”

“I think it could end very well, thank you,” I returned indigently.

                                *  *  *

Note: The last time my charries had an experience with a dragon was when King Karlenio (Princess Katonia’s father) defeated a red dragon who called himself “Death” in single combat in the middle of the huge battle at the end of my book. Even though King Karlenio had observational powers above and beyond his daughter’s, he barely escaped with his life – and even he needed supernatural help. You see, dragons have this ability where they paralyze their prey with a stare, but they rarely use it because it “ruins the flavor”. Dragons live to eat in my characters’ world.

Another note: Brian and Kate also had a very bad experience with velociraptors and t-rexes. I heard that someone has a dinosaur enrolled at the school, so they may want to watch out. Just a heads up.

For future reference, I’m going to import some descriptions of Brianaro from my story to prevent confusion. I (unfortunately) don’t have any pictures (yet) of him, so this will have to do.

This comes right after Brian was transformed from a white rat (long story) back into a boy.

“Suddenly, I wasn’t looking at a white rat anymore. I was looking at a black boot. I slowly looked up. My heart jumped in surprise. This was what I saw: First, shiny black boots. Then, dark pants fastened with a silver buckle and a sword scabbard on the belt. Up some more, and a blindingly white shirt glared back. Its white surface was marred only with a line of buttons in the front and a brown leather strap for a shield. Finally, at eye-level, I was staring into stormy gray eyes, somber but with a familiar twinkle. I gasped in recognition – it was Prince Brianaro, my best friend!

In case you didn’t get the hint in the description, he was the same height as me, which is to say, not tall. If you saw him in a crowd, you wouldn’t think much of him, but that white shirt hid a heart twice the average size (figuratively, thankfully). He was the best friend I could hope for – thoughtful, quiet, understanding, and morally uplifting. Speaking of morals, did I already say that his moral compass was legendary? He may not have known the easiest thing to do, or the fastest thing to do, but he always knew the right thing to do. Once, when he and I were playing together as young children, I offered him a stolen cookie I had nabbed. He simply gave me a solemn, disappointed, sad look, and I immediately vowed never to steal again. (That’s why I left payment for the horses and food at the inn.) He can really do that to you.”

And now, a bit of his backstory:

“Now, you might be thinking, “Aha, you were prince and princess growing up in the same castle, so you must be brother and sister, right?” Wrong. His parents (who were not the nicest people in the world (which makes no sense as Brian is the nicest person in the world (how many parentheticals can I fit in here))) decided that, at three, Brian should go somewhere else for a while. They plopped him off in Stonestia with the palace servants, and went off to enjoy a vacation in the Southern Sea. They never came back. I assume they enjoyed the solitude too much to go home, but I secretly hope they were shipwrecked and died a gruesome death. Brian of course forgave his parents, but I never could.”

Yes, my fantasy world has Stonestia as the kingdom. I hope this clears things up.
